WHO: Prue Halliwell and Peter Petrelli
WHAT: Prue's restless and wants to unwind. So she's engaging in one of her favorite pastimes: photography.
WHEN: Mid-afternoon
WHERE: The park and pond area near Building D.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Piper was gone. Yes, Paige, Chris, and the other Prue were still present, but Piper was gone. She had been the only familiar link that Prue had to her world - her little sister - and just like that she was no longer in the city. It had been a bitter pill to swallow, the knowledge that she likely would never see her again, and for a week or so Prue had allowed herself to wallow a bit in the sorrow that came with that knowledge.

Then she had done what she always did when faced with adversity. She picked herself up, brushed herself off, and found something to occupy her time so she wasn't obsessing (thinking intensely, thankyouverymuch) over the situation.

In this case, she had chosen photography. It had always been a passion of hers. A source of both relaxation and frustration in a way that wasn't too frustrating. Or at least wasn't life or death. And here in Colligo, there were plenty of picturesque places she could practice her hobby too.

Today, she had wandered to the park near Building D. The pond, and area surrounding it, especially was nice. The grass was still green but the leaves had begun to change to autumn colors. There was a slight breeze that caused them to sway in tandem, and various small, furry animals were scurrying about in search of meals to stockpile for the upcoming winter.

The camera that she'd purchased for a pretty penny - more grateful than ever for the job that she'd landed at that ad agency - was gripped tightly in her hands as she lined up the lens with a bird that had just landed on the edge of its nest. The bench overlooking the pond was in front of her and Prue climbed up on it, gaze still looking through the viewscreen of the camera on her shot, then knelt upon the cold wooden slabs. Just as the bird spread its wings for flight she took the shot, smiling to herself at what she was certain would be quite a nice picture once she'd had it developed.

Climbing back down off the bench, she peered through the viewscreen again in search of another shot that just screamed 'capture me on film'! She was so busy looking for that shot, in fact, that she didn't realize someone else was in the area until she managed to crash right into them. She stumbled back a few steps at the contact, her grip tightening even more on her camera as her gaze snapped upward, apology already on her lips and cheeks flushed slightly with embarrassment for her abnormal, less-than-attentive behavior.

If there was anyone who could understand what Prue was going through, it was Peter. Sure, it was the other way around for him. Nathan was the one who was dead in his time. But the fact still remained that he would probably never see his brother again. Chris tried to understand, but it was something that nobody could get unless they were experiencing it for themselves. As much as Peter and Nathan argued, and often didn't get along, his brother was still one of the most important people in his life.

He was walking in the park, trying to clear his head, when he spotted Prue. She seemed to be completely caught up in what she was doing, and consequently, he got caught up in what she was doing...which was awkward when she crashed into him. Okay, wow...that could have been less awkward. He steadied her and waved off any imminent apologies before they could be voiced. "My fault," he assured her. "Totally my fault. Sorry Prue. I just...you look really different when you're doing that. Your focus...it's really intense, but at the same time...I've never seen you looking that calm. I wish I had something that made me feel like that."

Seeing Peter brought a hint of a smile to Prue's face, although there was still a bit of sorrow in her gaze. Her cheeks still burned a bit with embarrassment but the waving away of her intended apology helped ease that a bit.

She glanced down at the camera when he spoke, the smile still present as she traced the edge of the lens lightly. "When I was younger, I wanted to be a photographer when I grew up," she admitted as her gaze slid back to Peter. Her smile became a fond one. "Grams used to say that I had a talent for it, but that it'd never pay the bills. And that if I wanted to be a starving artist that was certainly fine with her, but I needed to think long and hard before choosing that path."

She snorted softly as she slid the camera into the pouch slung over one of her shoulders. "I think she always thought that photography was just a way for me to express myself," she added thoughtfully. She gave a shrug. "It was one of the few times she was ever wrong."

Shaking her head as though to clear her mind of the memories, Prue blinked her hair out of her eyes as she re-focused her attention on Peter. "And that's probably one of those things that I really didn't have to share. Sorry about that. How are you?"

"I know how that can be," he said. "I used to work as a hospice nurse. I loved my work...I loved being there for people and helping them in a time when so many people feel alone...but nobody really understood why. My parents used to go on about how if I was going to do that, why not just be a doctor...certainly more prestigious. But...that was never what it was about for me." He shrugged. "I mean...I'm doing it now, but it still isn't about that." It was about wanting to save lives instead of watching them slip away. He was pretty sure Prue understood that.

"I think, in some ways," he said thoughtfully, "our families will always be the ones who have the hardest time understanding us...it's easier for them to misunderstand, because they're so sure that they know us, so it's harder for them to realize when they're not seeing what's actually there."

"Don't apologize," he said, shaking his head. "I didn't mind you sharing it. It's nice, getting to know more about you." He smiled. "I'm...you know what? I'm not really sure, but I don't actually think that's a bad thing." He shrugged. "I still have a long way to go, but I'm getting there." Whether he was talking about Barbas or Nathan, he wasn't even sure. "What about you? I noticed Piper's gone."

A shadow flickered across Prue's face at the mention of her sister. Her gaze dropped, briefly, to her shoes and she exhaled slowly. "Yeah," she said in a soft tone as she looked back up at him. She blinked and allowed a hint of a small, sad sort of smile to flash across her features briefly before it, too, fell to the carefully constructed, invulnerable mask that she tended to show most of the world.

"Well, I have my camera out and am wasting a perfectly good afternoon taking pictures instead of doing something productive," she finally answered him. Shaking her head, her gaze slid past Peter to the pond.

A light wind lifted a few strands of her hair and Prue closed her eyes briefly to the sensation before re-focusing her gaze on the man beside her. "So I guess I've been better. But..." She couldn't help but smile somewhat as she repeated his own answer right back to him.

"I'm getting there."

Peter recognized the expression on Prue's face well. He'd worn it himself often enough to know what it meant. Prue and Piper weren't all that different from himself and Nathan. But then, in her world, Prue was dead. "And you won't see her," he filled in the blanks. "Even if you go back...unless she comes back here, you won't see her again." He paused. "I know it's an overused and trite sentiment, and I usually hate it, but I really mean it when I say that I understand how you feel."

He smiled. "I think it's all in what you call productive," he said with a shrug. "You're making something beautiful and worthwhile, so I wouldn't call that a waste of anything. And even if you weren't obviously talented, it makes you happy. It's fulfilling for you, and that's enough right there."

His smile widened as she echoed his own words back at him. "Well," he said with a shrug, "maybe we'll both get there, with a little help from the people we care about. And there's certainly no shortage of those around here." He glanced over at her. "You know...if you ever need someone to talk to, I am around."
