WHO: Rose Tyler and Lee Adama
WHAT: Cooking Lessons
WHEN: Early evening
WHERE: Lee's room
RATING: TBD.
STATUS: In progress.

Rose walked the whole way to building D, not really minding the walk. After all she had ran further distances than this many times when travelling. She was quite happy that someone was willing to help her, was willing to show her a basic skill she really should have mastered years ago. But she never really had to rely on herself to cook. Before she travelled, if she had to make her own dinner it would be a take out. When she was travelling it would either be something quick in the TARDIS or they would stop off somewhere. Never cook.

When she eventually got to the room, she knocked on the door gently. Brushing a lock of hair behind her ear, she glanced at the bottle of wine in her hand. It was the usual thing to do, right? She just hoped she didn't offend him. It was the last thing she wanted to do to a potential friend.

He nodded. "My dad was hugely against networked connections. It's definitely a change to not get thrown into the brig for having one on board." It was nice, but still something Lee was trying to get used to.

"Okay, first. Do you eat meat?" Back in the war, people ate whatever they could get but before that, and here, there were people who were vegetarian. "I could show you how to brown meat, or cook chicken. A few different ways to cook vegetables or potatoes?"

She nodded a little, rather interested in what his life was like. She always had been curious like that, wanting to know how others lived their life and how different it was to hers.

"Why was that?" she asked with a curious smile but hoped he didn't feel like he had to say.

When he questioned her, she nodded. She didn't mind meat, after all she was use to just eating what she was given.

"I eat meat, yes. And just show me what you want to I don't mind."

"Cylons managed to take control of them and do ridiculous amounts of damage during a war. Ever since then, no networked computers for him." It had done him some good, too. If it weren't for that, the Galactica would've gone down in the attack on the Colonies.

"Okay, browning meat first. It's really easy," he grinned, taking some thawed ground meat out of the fridge and digging around for a pan.

"Cylons?" she asked with a curious smile.

She didn't expect him to explain, and if he chose not to then she wouldn't persist. But she was always curious, didn't really think she would ever get over that.

"Okay. Though I make no promises, I'm not exactly going to turn out fantastic," she said with a laugh, watching him.

"Robot race created by humans who evolved into having their own thoughts and feelings and rebelled against humanity." That was the gist of things. It was a lot more complicated than that, but Lee didn't feel like it was the time or the place to go into the nuclear holocaust or the running for their lives part.

He laughed. "Don't worry so much. Okay, first make sure the meat's not frozen. Easy enough, right? Then put it in the pan like this, and turn the heat on."

Rose nodded when he explained them. They unfortunately sounded a little too close to Daleks for her, even if she didn't know if they were created by humans. Robots who rebelled against humanity was close enough. She watched as he began to cook the meat, a small smile on her face.

"Easy enough? You don't know me," she said with a laugh.

Lee grinned at her. "Are you a burns toast sort, then?" he teased. "Generally, if it's not rock solid, it's at least thawing. This is the texture it should be when thawed. Possibly a little less mush, but that's really up to the cook."

"I certainly am," she said with a light laugh.

It was true. Unless she stood and stared at whatever machine she was using to cook, a cooker or a microwave it didn't matter which, then it would end up burnt to a crisp. She made herself listen as he spoke some more and nodded.

"Right, okay."

He smirked back. Cooking hadn't been a necessity back on the Galactica. Eating, yes. Cooking, no. Besides, when you were CAP you couldn't just go to the kitchen and cook something. Not that Lee would've wanted not to help keep his people alive.

"Want to try? All you do is just move the meat around, make sure it doesn't stay too long in one place."

She raised her eyebrow at his offer before taking a step forward. It couldn't be that difficult, it didn't exactly look like it. Copying what he had shown her, she kept her eye on the meat before looking at him.

"I'm sorry about this. I'm sure you have something better to do with your time."

"Don't be sorry," he smiled sincerely. Lee didn't make many friends here. He hadn't really been in the practice of making friends. Either he was too pompous for them or they didn't want to be friends with the Admiral's son. Friends on the Galactica were either Kara (or not...depending on how they were getting on) or out of necessity. "Better things to do with my time than teach you to cook? You must think I've got a busy, important life, Rose."

She smiled at him when he said she shouldn't be sorry, glad he seemed this nice. She hadn't spoke to many people since she arrived, and rarely got time to socialise these days with work. Especially since she had no idea how to run a business. She was already considering looking at selling it on, or finding someone to help her.

"I don't know, maybe you do. After all, I know barely anything about how you spend your time."

He shook his head slightly. "I'm afraid I don't do much in the ways of exciting nowadays. Too much excitement before I ended up here to last me several lifetimes. Here I don't do much beyond reading, visiting the gym, and working."

She kept her eyes on what she was meant to be doing as he spoke of what he used to do. Grinning at him, she nodded.

"Oh I know that feeling. Even if I do wish I could go back to it all."

Lee nodded, a sad smile playing at his lips. "I don't know that I have much to go back to there," he replied calmly. Lee's brother had long since been dead. His wife killed herself. Most of his fleet was either dead or dispersed throughout the 'Earth.' His father went off with the President, the latter of whom was likely to die soon or already be dead. His love had disappeared into nothing.

She bit her lip, glancing at the man. His smile said it all, and she wondered what had happened in his life to make him smile so sadly. On instinct, she reached out and took his hand, squeezing it gently.

"Then why don't we make sure you have something here to want to be here for, shall we?"

Lee was slightly shocked by Rose's hand on his, but after the briefest moment, he squeezed back and gave her a grateful look. She was terribly perceptive.

"Something here that I want to be here for? That would be nice."

She bit her lip at his look before pulling her hand away and letting it fall to her side. But he had squeezed back, so at least that was something. When he agreed with her, she smiled over at him.

"Maybe you could be here to make sure I don't starve?" she said, trying to lighten the mood just a little.

Lee laughed. "I could definitely do that. Maybe even get you to be a chef of sorts yourself." He raised an eyebrow, teasingly. He wouldn't mind cooking for someone other than himself from time to time, in addition to work. It was a little depressing cooking a meal for one all the time.

"Now that," she said, pointing her finger at him playfully. "Is extremely unlikely."

After all she didn't have a clue what she was doing now, let alone how to do anything else. But she could at least make him smile more often. She didn't like it when people weren't smiling.

"Come on, you're not that hopeless," he grinned. "Not everyone learns to cook right away." Lee took over again, showing her how to finish making the meal simply. "All that's left is to let it simmer so the taste stays in."

"Oh I'm hopeless. Completely."

She leaned against the counter as she watched him finish, trying to put it all in her memory. Though something told her it would be gone within the hour.

"Brilliant. I'll...write that down later."

She giggled along with him, watching him as he moved about. She wished there was something she could do to help but when he said about the wine she reached for the bottle.

"Think you can open this? I'm useless at it."

"Yeah," he replied, handing her the glasses and taking the wine bottle. Of the alcohol on the Galactica, he was best at opening up wine of most of the people he knew. Celebrations were few and far between but when they happened, they always involved wine, champagne, or some sort of ambrosia in a similar bottle. After a few moments, he managed to open it and poured them each a glass.

She smiled, taking the glasses from him when he handed them over. Watching him, she laughed when he eventually opened the bottle, holding the glasses out. Once he had finished pouring, she smiled and held his glass out to him.

"Don't adults normally toast to something? Only I never act like an adult when it comes to some things," she said with a laugh.

Lee couldn't help but laugh as he took his glass. Rose's enthusiasm was infectious. "To new memories, new friends, and hopefully Rose learning how to cook something edible," he grinned, holding out his glass.

Rose couldn't stop her laugh with that adding on about her cooking, holding out her own glass before taking a sip. Her smile didn't once leave her face.

"Well lucky for you, what's cooking now has mostly been made by you so I don't think we're in danger."

He shook his head slightly, setting his wine glass down and making up two plates of food. "Thanks for, you know," Lee shrugged. For as well spoken as he was, he was still loathe to admit that he did enjoy company. "Helping me eat all this food," he finally finished, taking the plates over to the table.

"Are you on your own here, too?" Lee asked. It just dawned on him that he was being incredibly self-centered. He didn't know much about Rose. "Yes. You can sit down and enjoy dinner." Lee smiled, holding out a chair for her.

"I have a friend who I've not heard from, I don't know if he's still here or not."

She smiled a little when he held the chair out for her, moving to sit in it, thanking him as she did.

"Quite the gentleman," she said, smiling at him.

"Out of contact or a bit afraid of what you'll find?" Lee could empathize with either.

He shook his head slightly as he sat opposite her. "I don't know if my mom or dad would be more angry if I weren't." Both had raised him to be respectful and polite. Even if his father hadn't been a bit part of his life after his parents split.

"Afraid. I don't...want to admit that I'm alone here. It's better thinking he's just busy."

She smiled at him, watching as he spoke of his parents. It was strange thinking that she had only really just met this man at yet she felt rather comfortable just speaking to him.

"Well it doesn't happen enough, if I'm honest."

Lee nodded. "The best of us are, most of the time." Afraid, not wanting to think they're alone. All of those sorts of things. Lee had felt alone as much back on the new Earth as he did here, though, so that wasn't a huge difference.

"No? A lack of gentlemen back home?"

She smiled at nodded at his words, biting her lip. It was true, everyone was afraid at times. But she just didn't like admitting to it. Didn't want to seem weak, she never liked seeming weak.

"Well men don't always act like that back home."

She smiled a little, watching him for a moment. She found it strange that she seemed so comfortable with him, as if they had known each other for years. Then again, she was a friendly person, so she found she felt that often.

"Well I have no complaints about how polite you're being, so that's what matters," she said with a grin.
