CHARACTERS: Simon and Kaylee
LOCATION: Building A
TIME: Near sunset
NOTES: n/a

Simon nearly burst into #301A but restrained himself. If something really was going on with Kaylee's memories, he'd have to assess the situation calmly. Aggitating her might cause further damage before he could determine what was going on.

Breathing calmly, he knocked on the door and waited for her to open it.

"I'm fine," he smiled back. "Since I know that you're okay." Saying that she was okay snapped him out of his euphoric daze. "I'm actually worried about you. Some of the things you mentioned don't line up. When did you say the last time you saw Wash was?"

"Right before I got here," Kaylee said, blinking at Simon in confusion. "We're all crammed on a ship together, Simon. It's really hard not to see each other, ya know." What was he playing at here, exactly? How did that not line up?

"Are you sure you're all right?"

"Kaylee, Wash..." Simon had very little experience delivering bad news, mostly because he was so good he rarely had to. Still, he had told fathers that their sons had died, told wives that their husbands would never walk again, told expectant mothers that they could not save the child.

But he found that experience all meant nothing. He could not bring himself to tell Kaylee that Wash was dead. "Wash hasn't been on the ship for about a month. Tell me, before you found yourself here, what was the date? As best as you can recall."

He looked into her eyes, trying to determine if they were dialating or not, but he kept getting distracted by how bright and beautiful they were.

"How could Wash not be on the ship?" Kaylee asked, laughing a bit at the very suggestion. He was the pilot, after all. Unless they were all taking some time shoreside, she couldn't understand exactly what Simon was trying to get at. Unless he was playing some sort of joke, and he didn't seem to be joking.

"About a week after Early," Kaylee said, looking up at Simon when he asked about the date, furrowing her brow at him. Did he know something that she didn't? She knew that there were those from all different sorts of times here, but she hadn't figured on something like this. "Why?"

That long ago? That was more than most drug or concussion based amnesia's would cause.

"Kaylee, I don't know how to tell you this, but you have amnesia. Since coming here, have you been in any fights or performed any strenuous activities? Also do you remember Miranda at all?" Or me? Us? That week of shore leave on the crystal beaches of Athena?

"Miranda? Did Inara bring on another female client? Why would I remember something like that?" Kaylee asked before frowning at him, shaking her head with a sigh. "I don't have amnesia, Simon. Don't be silly. Don't you think I would realize if something like that had happened? And no, I haven't gotten into any fights or done anything strenuous, not that would result in amnesia, at least. Stop being ridiculous."

"No, Miranda is a planet." Simon got out his medical kit and started scanning Kaylee. "It's typical for amnesia victims to patch small holes in their memory, so they have no way of knowing that they've actually lost any time. But it's been over six months since we took care of Early."

"Oh. Oh," Kaylee said as a quiet realization dawned on her. If they could pull people out of the past and the future, different time lines and realities, why couldn't they drag two people that knew each other from two different points in time? "I think I know what's going on," Kaylee said, smiling up at Simon. "It ain't no big deal. You just have a bit more time than I do," She said, reaching out and ruffling his hair. "Put that thing away, kay? I'm fine."

Simon paused the scanner, but didn't turn it off. "More time? What are you talking about?"

"They ain't exactly consistent when they drag people here," Kaylee said, smiling at him. "There's people from the past, from the future, and all sorts of different realities here. You're just a little ahead of me, that's all. Nothing to get so worked up about," She said, grinning at Simon.

"Now, what's this about Wash not being on the ship? Mal finally give in and let him and Zoe get some extended leave?"

"Are you saying... that you're from my past? That I'm from your future?"

Simon's first impulse was to think that she had suffered delirium which was resulting in the memory loss, but then he remembered Occam's razor. Time travel, as unlikely as it was, would explain the difference in memories, as well as somethings that memory loss couldn't explain, like how she could be on Serenity last night, and yet have been here a week. Plus neither of the other doctors he spoke too seemed to believe there was anything about this place that would cause memory loss in multiple people.

Time travel was something that River would know more about, but Simon could keep up with the basics. Still, he had to tell Kaylee.

"I'm afraid it's not that simple Kaylee. Wash is... or will be... dead."

Kaylee felt like the world dropped out from under her. What was he saying? Why was he saying it? That wasn't possible. It just wasn't possible. They got hurt plenty, sure. But those were all close scraps. They only had close scraps. They didn't die. "That's not funny," Kaylee said, choking on the words as she stared at Simon before her expression hardened into a glare. "That isn't funny, Simon Tam! Just because you have the benefit here doesn't mean that you can play sick jokes on me. Take it back now! Take it back. He isn't dead. He isn't," She said, her anger in her tone fading into desperation.

"He isn't."

"You know I would never joke about something like that." Simon said solemnly. "He died, after Miranda, when we had to make a mad dash to Mr. Universe's nebula. He flew... even I could tell that it was amazing. Nobody else in the whole 'verse could have done what he did that day. He got us there. Not in one piece, but he got us there. And then... at least it was quick. He didn't suffer."

"Gibberish. You're talkin' gibberish," Kaylee said, tears welling up in her eyes as she stared at Simon. But he was serious, impassive, solemn. Wash really was dead. "Stop talking gibberish," Kaylee said, her voice barely a whisper as she squeezed her eyes shut to keep from sobbing outright.

Six months. Six months, and that was it? And she was stuck here.

"It's not fair."

Without even thinking about it, Simon pulled Kaylee into a warm hug. "If I could make this be nothing but a bad joke I would. But I can't lie to you. And... you need to know. Because I don't know how this time travel stuff works and if we... If you return to your own time, you might be able to stop it. But if we both end up at my time... you need to be ready for it."

"We ain't going nowhere," Kaylee murmured against Simon's shoulders, trying not to be too concerned with the fact that the tears had crept their way past her eyes and were quickly making the shoulder of Simon's shirt damp. "We're stuck, just like everyone else here. No way to go home."

But maybe that was for the best? Here, there wasn't anything chasing them, nothing lacking, no livelihood to grope for in any way possible. Sure, it was calm, maybe even a bit boring, but the company was nice and the place was safe. Even if it was a bit odd, there was nothing to complain about.

It could have been much worse.

"I don't know what's going to happen next," Simon admitted, even as he patted her back soothingly. "Nothing I've studied or been through could ever give me the answers to this. But there are worse things than to be stuck here. I have River, safe and sound and getting better. And I have people to take care of and to patch up. I even have a cranky man to yell at me condescendingly in a Southern accent."

He pulled back for a moment so he could look her in the eye. "And I have you."

Kaylee's mouth twitched briefly into a smile at his word before it dropped off into confusion at his last statement. He had her? What in the world did he mean by that? Last she remembered, they were still playing that dance around game where they each pretended like the other didn't matter. Course, there might have been the issue.

Last she remembered.

"What do ya mean?" Kaylee asked. Best to clarify.

Simon laughed slightly. "I never thought I'd have to go over this again." He guided Kaylee to the bed. "Listen Kaylee. I'm not going to go into much detail, but the day Wash died, we all faced death. And it made me realize something. I've been so focused on being the perfect brother, the perfect guardian for River. And I felt that to do this, I had to cut myself off from everything, and everyone, that I wanted."

Simon took a deep breath. You'd think doing this again would be easier the second time. "And when I faced my own death, when I was lying bleeding, with my medical bag miles away, one of the things, the only thing I found myself regretting, was that I hadn't spent more time with you. That I hadn't allowed myself to be close to you."

Well, this was...unexpected. Smiling through her tears as she looked up at Simon, Kaylee raised a hand to touch his cheek, "Well, look at that," She said, her smile widening ever so slightly. "For once, you said something right,"

"Guess that does make some difference," Kaylee said, a quiet amusement in her voice as she looked up at her, really unsure where to go next. It was a lot to take it all at once, and she wasn't sure that it was something that she was really prepared for. The other Kaylee had had six months, six months more time, six months more experiences than she did.

So she just sat there, looking up at him for a long moment before leaning forward and slowly wrapping him in a hug, "Well, I'm glad that you said it again. Leaves me the trouble of draggin' it out of ya when I finally do get fed up."

Simon hugged her back, taking it all in before he knew he had to break it. "I'm not sure where this leaves us," he admitted sheepishly. "I can't... I can't expect to just pick up where we... I mean, I left off." Simon felt it was probably best he didn't mention where exactly they "left off" or how quickly they got to that point after his initial confession. "It's... well, I'm fairly sure this is unprecedented for either of us. So what happens next... is up to you."

"We can just wait and see?" Kaylee suggested, offering him a very light smile. She was still sweet on him, she had to admit that, and him finally admitting after so long of her expecting and waiting for it was what she had been hoping for for so long. But right now, she definitely wasn't ready for all that it entitled. Not with this situation and the other revelations to deal with on top of that.

"That sounds fine," Simon smiled, masking his disappointment. He had secretly hoped that they could get back to where they had been, even though he couldn't expect it of her. He had kept her waiting for so long, it was unfair for him to just expect things to move when he was ready, just because it had before. Last time well... things had been right, they had both been in the same place. It shamed him slightly to think that it was the death of their friend that got them there.

But this wasn't about him. This was about Kaylee. And what she needed now. He was sure they would make it in the end.
