1/1 First Day

This holiday marks the official start of the new year, 3:25 Towers. In rural areas, people walk for miles to visit with their closest neighbors, bringing gifts of food and drink to share, but in the city, it is more common to receive visitors over the course of the day, with particularly close neighborhoods such as the Alienage opting for open doors and communal feasting and merriment. Cumberland has traditionally received an address from the ruling Duke in front of the palace, wishing for peace and prosperity in the new year, but this year’s address will be delivered by King Markus Pentaghast.

1/4 Heavyhanded Tactics

In the wake of the previous year’s tragedies, the negotiators reconvene. Both Marquise Manon de Freyen and Magister Octavius Alexius have new terms in mind, with King Markus Pentaghast offering suggestions of his own. However, Warden Commander Frieda Ortan has several surprises up her sleeve which prove extremely effective in moving things along.

1/9 The First Challenge

Idril arrives at the Hero’s Crown for her scheduled meeting only to discover that her blackmailer is none other than the young Duke Sebastien Van Markham, and he has a job for her...

1/13 Alienage in Disarray

The city guard receives an anonymous tip which leads to soldiers arriving in the alienage to search the home of Euria Ghrian. When the woman herself proves elusive, the search gets rough. Most of the alienage residents are easily cowed but several brave individuals take it upon themselves to engage the soldiers in battle. All Alienage Defenders, including Sorin Ghrian, are arrested.

1/15 An Exchange of Lives

With the Alienage Defenders sentenced to death, Euria Ghrian must act decisively to prevent the execution.

1/23 Chantry Board: Haunted Mansion

The Chantry receives reports of strange happenings at the Van Markham summer home up the coast, prompting a call for a team of volunteers to investigate. Iveani Ralaferin, Noëlle d'Orly, and Marin Voclain should have an easy journey, but unfortunately, an uncommonly powerful cold front arrives, bringing with it a blizzard that hits all along the coast, ensuring the volunteers arrive late and must remain in the abandoned mansion overnight.

1/27 Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Just because the Crows have lost two of their own doesn’t mean things slow down, and Sergio Cortes makes an appearance - in person - to remind the remaining assassins of that. Aside from his physical presence, he also brings a new contract: the assassination of a slaver masquerading as a merchant.

The month began with another miss for the Crows, with Idril making an attempt on King Markus Pentaghast but instead slaying Archduke Ferdinand Pentaghast. Although she escaped, she was not unseen - and soon enough a key witness made his move, though what he intends to do with the information he possesses remains to be seen. This wasn’t the only high-profile death of the month, either, as Duchess Isolde Van Markham at last revealed herself as the blood mage who has been terrorizing Cumberland all along. Although she was ultimately defeated, it was only after she had already killed both Duchess Aurore Valmont and Prince Aurelian Pentaghast. The city hosted a royal funeral, the day made more somber by the realization that the negotiated agreement was in jeopardy.

In less deadly news, Sandrin Tethras of the Merchants’ Guild requested escorts for a guild trip to Orzammar. The adventurers faced various difficulties but returned home safely. The Grey Wardens also traveled, but north instead of south, to scout at the Tevene border. They faced and defeated a battalion of darkspawn to liberate the outpost at Caimen Brea, then hastened back to Cumberland with the news that the line had broken, leading Warden Commander Frieda Ortan to take matters into her own hands.

plot pc requests
The Alienage in Disarray plot event provides an opportunity to play a number of Alienage Elves. Euria Ghrian and Audra Ghrian are required, but if anyone wants to play another alienage elf, there are additional roles you can fill. They can survive the plot or not. Please contact the mods if you want to brainstorm. These characters will not be required after the end of January.

Remember that temp PCs are your chance to play a plot character. These characters are not subject to AC, do not count against your character limit, are not subject to class/specialization caps, and are meant to last a short time. For more details, see the Announcements below.

For the plot events that require a limited number of PCs, such the Haunted Mansion quest, sign-ups are located below. The mods will dropbox or e-mail you relevant information in advance so you can log out your plot

For events such as Firstday that are open to large numbers of characters, there will be a plotting post with more information closer to the date of the event.

For the Alienage in Disarray event, although the number of defenders is unlimited, please only sign up if your character could reasonably be present at the alienage. Note that any mage who uses magic in combat against the city guard will be turned over to the Templars instead of being jailed, and this will result in the Rite of Tranquility immediately. Therefore, if you want your character to survive unscathed, you may wish to limit sign-ups for the defense of the alienage to warriors or rogues only.

Don't forget that for your AC, one of your two submissions needs to happen in the first 14 days of the month

Remember that temp PCs are meant to be expendable. What happens to your temp PC will be determined by the needs of the plot. Once you have completed the mini app, mods will contact you with the NPC journal password and instructions for your temp character’s role in plot. Personality: Euria is a flighty soul, her family being the only thing that keeps her grounded (Audra, she will forever claim, is the “responsible” one). Otherwise, many speculate, she might have left Cumberland five more times already by now instead of just the once when she was barely a teenager. She claims she found the Dalish in her travels, and it’s up to the individual if they believe her or not, for the story changes every time as though on purpose to keep everyone guessing; why she came back, however, is an answer she never gives, her grin almost conspiratorial when asked. But her love of laughter, fun, and music is truly only second to her love for her family, and anyone can see that underneath that smile is a mother who is fiercely and ruthlessly protective over her son and a woman who is passionately in love with her wife.

Personality: Audra always wishes everyone could live together in peace and harmony - as a family, as an extended family, as a community, as a city, as a nation, as a continent. But she believes, deep in her heart, in the right everyone has to be themselves. Those two ideals do not have to be at odds with each other, but frequently they are. And she stands by people in the latter, as her part of being the former. With roots as deep in the community as the alienage has existed, Audra never much considered life outside Cumberland for herself, for her own sake. She’s aware of Euria’s heart soaring and possibly wishing for travels and other places. And she recognizes some of that in her son as well, but she just has never been able to pull up her roots. Her disposition makes her both happy and grumpy at the same time. Audra has found what she wanted, and yet it has cost her so much. And recognition is a constant relentless battle. As part of that, thus, dates are extremely important to her. Birthdays, anniversaries, etc are always something. It may only be making someone’s favorite meal or freshly laundered sheets on the bed, but she marks the day somehow. And she expects others to remember - not all of them, she is realistic - and lets that be known. Her memory is excellent, and she will remember the little things she’s been told, the hopes and dreams shared with her out loud or in glances, demonstrated through whatever means a person has to seek it. Life is difficult, and getting what one wants or needs isn’t always so simple as saying it and going after it, so she sometimes uses subterfuge or helps someone else with it.
