If Nightwing had been thinking clearly, he would have remembered all of the times that he'd been kidnapped back in his days as Robin while under Batman's watch. But ever since finding out that his replacement had been kidnapped, it had been all Nightwing could think about; the fact that he was supposed to be in charge because, without Batman around, he had the most experience as a costumed hero. That meant that Batgirl, Kim, and Robin were under his protection. And he'd let them down. He'd let Robin down. And now he was probably going to pay with his life.
If Batman had just been there, he probably would have had the whole thing figured out already -- The Joker behind bars, the townspeople back to their normal zombie-like state, and the weapons being broken down and used to rebuild what had been destroyed in the battles. And The Joker wanted Batman, that much was obvious. He didn't know Robin or Batgirl or Nightwing, but he knew Batman and he knew that they all had a connection to Batman; and since the man, himself, hadn't made his presence known that meant that he had to go through the Junior Bats first to draw him out.
But how could he draw out Batman if he wasn't there?
Nightwing finally dragged himself away from the computer, away from the picture of Robin lying prone, face painted with the shadow of The Joker looming over him and took out one of the spare Batsuits. It felt almost sacrilegious to even consider what he was, but did he really have a choice? Robin needed help, and his best chance was Batman. Nightwing was no Batman, didn't want to be Batman, but he was closest thing they had until the real deal came back. A quick glance at the photograph of Robin still on the computer made up his mind for him. He changed and then spent the next hour perfecting his Batman impersonation; he was a little short for the part, but most of the people around the building had rarely or never seen him in person before anyway.
All that was left, then, was the lead and he knew just the man to see. He landed not quite as quietly as Batman would have a few feet behind his target and melted out of the shadows, using ever trick that Batman had ever taught him to make himself seem bigger than he really was.
