Always destructive. The thought had lingered in the air around her as she had assessed the damage. While not extensive by any means, in this subarctic cold, it was a matter of survival. Khepri had grown rather attached to the cobras she worked with on the Midway, had given them names and spoke with them often, and as a result felt some sort of maternal need to protect them. The invasion of their small little trailer and the breaking of their heat source angered her, but with the Hunt over and none left but those who belonged to the circus, it was likely the culprit is long gone. Another unavenged crime against her that would burn alongside the deepest one, a taunt she would never quite escape from. As she waited for the man who had offered to assist her, Khepri hissed at her companions, ordering them to stay huddled under the poorly functioning replacement as she plucked glass shards off of the floor. She wished the burglar’s escapade had ended with breaking the bulb only, but it looked as if they had ruined some of the wiring as well as the structure. Of course, it was entirely possible this entire incident was born accidentally. The Hunt had instilled hysteria within those patrons who had been trapped inside of it. Khepri acknowledged, in the most dismissive of ways, her intruder and broken in out of a desire to hide, only to be confronted with the cobras and fled, breaking the lamp in the process. Regardless, had she not arrived as timely as she had, her companions could have been injured and her ire would have only been more uncontrollable. Disposing of the glass shards, Khepri stood in the middle of the room checking for any stray pieces she might have missed. The air in the trailer was cooler than she would have liked it and it sunk into her skin, crawling slowly towards her bones. At the moment, she wanted nothing more than to curl up under the heat lamp with the other cobras, to feel the warmth on her scales, but she tempered that desire; it would simply be easier to be in this form until after the business with the lamp was settled. And so, she waited though she did warn her companions to be on their best behavior just as she had promised. |
