Just as he said he would, Nik had arrived at the Lady's Table just in time to catch the end of her shift and the last cup of lobster bisque for the evening. She had greeted him with a grin that never failed to grace her features when she saw him, but that faltered slightly when she noted the dark circles under his eyes. They were the undoubted results of the restless fight for sleep she'd heard him endure the night before, but her offer for a rain check on their plans was refused, and she had left him to talk with Arnaud and eat some dinner while she finished her shift.
Once she was done and the last of the guests had been ushered from the premises, she had slipped into the back room to get changed out of her uniform, being sure to steal Arnaud's spoon from the kitchen as she went. He had been borderline intolerable tonight, and such petty burglary was her retribution for each insufferably smug condescension she had had to suffer through. She wondered, briefly, if he'd begun to notice that the small inventory she'd already confiscated from previous nights had gone missing. So far she had accrued two cookbooks, a pamphlet, and now a spoon.
Shrugging herself into a gray, loose-fitting sweater and slouched jeans, she slung her bag over her shoulder as she made her way out to meet with Nik, finally free for the evening. They had planned to meet up and explore the cirque together tonight, and she would have been lying if she'd said she hadn't been looking forward to getting to spend some time with him. It felt like the first time since they'd signed their contracts, even despite their sharing the same living space.
She approached his imposing figure and pressed a white styrofoam cup into his palm. "Here. Caffeine fix. No offense, you just really look like you could use one." She offered a lopsided grin at that. "You sure you still want to check out the Puppeteer's tent tonight? I know the whole place is kinda weird right now. Even Arnaud seemed more pissed than usual today, and I didn't even think that was possible. He boldly grumps where no man has ever grumped before."
