I didn't watch the last season of Buffy, but I want to say yes because her actress is Hispanic? *goes to check Google* Yup, she's Hispanic with Native American heritage as well.

And comic book CoC's count too, yes?

If the comic book canon has them as CoC (because there are different versions where some characters are of color in them but aren't in others, I'm thinking of a few Marvel characters lol), then yup, they count. Just as long as they use the correct comic book version. :D

Are sportspeople okay? I was thinking of Nicky Winmar, Anthony Mundine and Cathy Freeman (all Australian Aboriginal).

Doctor Who has Martha Jones.

30 Rock has Tracy Jordan, Grizz & DotCom, Toofer and Elyssa.

Ugly Betty also has Renee, Hilda, Ignacio, Justin, Sofia.

Movie The Cider House Rules has Erykah Badu.

Stupid, Stupid Man has Anne.

Of course, anything Bollywood has Indians in it :D

There is a British police drama called The Bill which has had quite a few characters of colour; black, Indian, probably other. But I haven't watched it in ages so I'm afraid I'd be writing about characters from 2006!

As long as they're famous Real People (and not some Joe off the street), it's acceptable. Sportspeople are definitely so. :D

Hee, yeah. This list is totally not complete, so thank you for the suggestions!

In Harry Potter, there would also be Angelina Johnson, Lee Jordan, Mrs. Zabini, Ali Bashir (flying carpet salesman), Po Quong (magical creatures expert), as well as any number of characters known only by name whose ethnicity could be expanded on.

I noticed that you have a character played by Jessica Alba(Dark Angel's Max) listed but not Edward James Olmos(Battlestar Galactica's Bill Adama) or Vin Diesel(Chronicles of Riddick's Riddick). Is there a criteria for including or excluding people technically of color who may be perceived as white?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]bridgetmkennitt
2010-02-03 07:59 pm UTC (link)
To be honest, some characters we just plain forgot to list (which is why the first paragraph states that the list is incomplete and doesn't show all chromatic characters in said fandoms) or don't know the canon well enough when we searched Wikipedia. For example, someone mentioned Angelina Johnson from HP and I feel like an ass for forgetting her because I'm actually in the HP fandom!

We do have answers for your question in the FAQ. I'll state them here:

How do I know if [CHARACTER/PERSON] qualifies as a character/person of color?
If you have any questions about this, please contact your friendly mods. Take it as a helpful note that we do consider biracial, multiracial characters/people of African/Asian/Middle Eastern/Indigenous (First Nations, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, etc) descent as 'of color'.

What if the actor for [CHARACTER] is a person of color, but their character isn't specifically stated as a character of color. Can I still write about said character?
Short answer, yes. Many times, characters assume the ethnicity of their actors, so we'll accept that for the challenge.

So Vin Diesel characters and (I assume Edward James Olmos as well since I'm not a BSG watcher and neither are the other mods) would count if you'd like to create fannish works about them. There are many characters/people of color who are perceived as white but aren't, and we won't hold that against participants.

Paul Ballard was listed because of his actor Tahmoh Penikett who is First Nations on his mother's side.

Our FAQ lists as such:

How do I know if [CHARACTER/PERSON] qualifies as a character/person of color?
If you have any questions about this, please contact your friendly mods. Take it as a helpful note that we do consider biracial, multiracial characters/people of African/Asian/Middle Eastern/Indigenous (First Nations, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, etc) descent as 'of color'.

Short answer, yes. Many times, characters assume the ethnicity of their actors, so we'll accept that for the challenge.

I hope that helps!

I don't think Maria's surname is given in the Harold and Kumar movies. (And as far as I know "Quesadilla" isn't actually a surname; someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that.)

Additional CoC:

Due South - Elaine Besbriss, Jack Huey
The Mentalist - Kimball Cho
Merlin (BBC) - Gwen
Psych - Burton "Gus" Guster
SeaQuest DSV - Jonathan Ford, Miguel Ortiz
The Sentinel - Simon Banks, Henri Brown
Stargate Atlantis - Aiden Ford

I got Maria's last name from Wikipedia, though the White Castle page has it as "Paula Garcés as Maria Quesa Dilla: Harold and Kumar's beautiful neighbor, on whom Harold has a massive crush." I can easily take off her last name though.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll add them to the list.

Is an ancient Greek chromatic?
'Cause I'd love to do something with my favourite character from Suzanne Frank's book Shadows on the Aegean, Dion. To be precise, he's an inhabitant of Atzlan, somewhere near Crete. ...Does that qualify as chromatic?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]bridgetmkennitt
2010-02-18 01:33 am UTC (link)
Is there a passage or a description somewhere in the book that describes Dion as a character of color? Is Dion described as having darker skin or different features than the white cast? We do not consider in general ancient Greek as an 'of color' place as we would Rwanda or Japan, so unless it is otherwise stated in the book, no, we would not qualify Dion as a chromatic character.

Okay, thank you.
Sorry for being stupid here, but... an ancient Egyptian would be chromatic, yes? (Problem is, I don't have the book at hand so I can't look it up, but the other character, Cheftu, is most definitely darker than white people, I know that.)

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]bridgetmkennitt
2010-02-18 11:59 pm UTC (link)
Normally, I would say ancient Egypt would be considered a chromatic place, but looking at the Amazon reviews, Cheftu isn't really an Egyptian but a time travel now in someone's body? (I've never heard of the book and am going by the reviews, so forgive me). It's iffy. Do the other people treat Cheftu like he is an Egyptian man?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]prayer_at_night
2010-02-19 10:55 am UTC (link)
Yes, they do. Only some of the other time travelers know that he is not really an Egyptian, everyone else is sure he is just Cheftu. And... you know, he is inhabiting that egyptian body since he's a teenager. And by now he considers himself more of an Egyptian than a French. Does that make any sense if you haven't read the book?
...Like, the female protagonist, Chloe, is so very much Chloe, and even though she is in an egyptian body as well in the first book, I wouldn't consider her an Egyptian. Cheftu on the other side is not Jean-Francois anymore, he's Cheftu, an Egyptian doctor.
