Frequently Asked Questions
Who runs the challenge?
That would be xie_xie_xie, vl_redreign, and bridgetmkennitt. Both vl_redreign and bridgetmkennitt self identify as people of color. Please direct any chromaticvision questions to the email cv3mods AT gmail DOT com and not their personal journals.
Who can participate?
The challenge is open to anyone who wishes to create fannish works for characters of color. You don't have to be a PoC to join the challenge.
Do I have to have an Insanejournal in order to participate in Chromatic Vision?
No, you are not required to have an Insanejournal account, though it would certainly be helpful. You can sign up using any journal OpenID. When it comes to posting itself, you can either send the submission to any of the mods (more details here) and we can post it to the asylum for you or you can sign up for an IJ account and post for yourself.
Can I sign up for a non-fictional person?
Yes. We allow people to sign up for Real People (athletes, celebrities, musicians, etc), whether as RPS/RPF in fics or in other fannish works like fanart, meta, icons, etc, along with fictional characters. Just as long as said person is a person of color.
Can I create a work based on original characters instead of something fannish?
Unfortunately, no. We ask that any works created are featuring fannish characters of color or celebrities of color. No original main characters. You may have original characters of color as background characters, but not as your mains.
Can I sign up for more than one character/person of color?
Of course! You can sign up for as many characters/people from as many fandoms you'd like. Just make sure you will be able to fulfill each submission.
Can I create more than one work?
Of course! You can create and submit as many works for as many characters of color as you'd like.
User1 is signing up for Character X. Can I also sign up for Character X?
Yes, of course! There is no limit to how many people can sign up for any character. The more, the merrier.
How do I know if [CHARACTER/PERSON] qualifies as a character/person of color?
If you have any questions about this, please contact your friendly mods. Take it as a helpful note that we do consider biracial, multiracial characters/people of African/Asian/Middle Eastern/Indigenous (First Nations, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, etc) descent as 'of color'.
What if the actor for [CHARACTER] is a person of color, but their character isn't specifically stated as a character of color. Can I still write about said character?
Short answer, yes. Many times, characters assume the ethnicity of their actors, so we'll accept that for the challenge. No one doubts a character played by Don Cheadle is black, so we'll give the same benefit to characters played by actors who can pass as white but aren't.
Do you consider Spock or Gaila from the new Star Trek movie as Characters of Color?
No. No. No. Alien does not automatically equal character of color. With Spock, his mother is never directly or indirectly stated as a human of color (and her actress is white), nor is his father a black Vulcan like Tuvok. While Spock is half human and half Vulcan, he is not a character of color.
With Gaila, she is a white actress painted up in green. Again, alien does not automatically equal character of color. So again, no.
Is my type of art acceptable for Chromatic Vision?
Short answer, yes. We are aware that there are different forms for art between the various fandoms and we accept any art listed below:
Drawn art (traditional or digital)
Graphics (Wallpapers, Headers, Icons, etc)
However, if you still have any questions, please contact a mod.
Can I do a crossover between two fandoms for my fannish work?
Yes. Just remember that the fannish work must be about a character of color.
I usually write with a co-author. Is that okay?
Yes, it is! Just remember to sign up with both authors and mention co-authoring.
What if I want to write about X or Y?
Any and all kinks are acceptable, just as long as it is noted in your headers. You may also hide your warnings/contains with the html below:
What if my fic is too long/What if I need hosting for my fanart?
If you need hosting for either your vid, fanart, or fic, please let the mods know so we can host it for you. The hosting can be on a temporary or permanent basis. If it is on a permanent basis, please consider the option of archiving in the Chromatic Vision Archive.
What is Everything Old Is New?
Everything Old Is New is a way to promote your older works featuring a character/person of color. These can be posted on April 11, 2011. These works are also eligible to be submitted to the Chromatic Vision Archive on AO3.
Do I have to archive my work(s) at the Chromatic Vision archive?
No, you do not. While we would appreciate it, the archive is purely opt-in. The reason we have the archive at Archive Of Our Own is wider exposure for said works. You can learn more about the Archive here.
I need to drop out...
We are sorry to hear that. Please make use of our drop-out form here. We would, however, like to point out that we do have an amnesty period from April 15, 2011 onward so you can continue to post your fannish work even if you miss the posting dates. Your work will be updated into the masterlist and still have an opportunity to be archived into the Archive if you so choose.
