Characters: Rodney McKay and Carson Beckett
Day: Day Four
Time of day: Late morning
Location: Some grassy area with scary moving bushes!
Rating: PG-13
Status: Incomplete

Rodney’s head jerked to the side when he heard Carson’s outburst about his wee turtles. Shaking his head, he resisted the urge to roll his eyes at the other man’s dramatics. However, when Sheppard made his comment about turtle soup, Rodney found himself softly snorting. It was good for Beckett to get teased sometimes. Plus it was fun.

Turning his attention back to his tablet, Rodney punched in a few more things before looking toward the front of the jumper. This had to work. There was no way any of them were going to allow the SGC to blow up Atlantis because of a few Replicators. “The hack is finished and--.”

Before Rodney could finish his sentence, their was a burst of bright light. He shielded his eyes as he suddenly felt like he was falling from the sky. He tried to say something but the words wouldn’t come out. Suddenly, the feeling of falling stopped and he landed on the ground with a thud.

“Ow,” he muttered as he spit out a mouthful of grass.

Rodney lifted his head a bit and looked around. It looked like he was in the middle of a grassy field. Had Sheppard crashed the jumper? If so, then where were the rest of them?

Slowly he stood, looking down at the small scratches on his hand, before he looked around. “Elizabeth? John? Carson?” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Anyone?”

There was movement in one of the bushes so Rodney jerked his gun out of his thigh holster and pointed it. “I have a gun!” he said in a high pitched voice. What if it was Wraith coming out of the bushes? He needed to sound scarier. “And I know how to use it! I’ll shoot you if I have to!”

His hands were shaking but he still cocked his gun. Rodney wasn’t about to let some Wraith have him for lunch!

Carson walked careful through the corridor, the container held out in front of him. His heart was practically thudding in his ears, but he couldn't let himself be distracted. He needed to reach the bomb squad and pass this off, so they could get it to where they could safely dispose of the bloody thing.

Taking a deep breath, he looked up the corridor, where he saw the squad waiting. Just a few more steps. One...two...three... Steady there, Carson. Rodney will never let you live this down...

When he reached the squad, he carefully handed off the container and let out a deep breath before turning around and walking away. However, just as he put his hand up to activate his headset, there was a bright flash of light all around him along with heat that seemed to penetrate his skin.

And the next thing, he knew he was face down on the ground. But not the floor in Atlantis. There were grasses and bushes around him. And when he turned over to look up at the sky, letting out a soft groan, he saw a sun overhead.

The tumor must have exploded. Was this heaven?

But then he heard someone yelling, saying the had a gun. Rodney? Oh dear lord, had he been caught in the explosion? Was he dead too?

Getting up, he pushed his way out of the bushes. "Rodney, it's me! Don't shoot!" Frowning, he stared at his friend before looking down to see he was in the clothes he had been wearing. "If this is heaven, why do you have a gun? Aren't we supposed to be in white robes?"

Rodney took several deep breaths, readying himself to shoot whatever was behind the bushes. He placed his finger on the trigger and blinked as a bead of sweat rolled into one of his eyes. He was about to shoot when a familiar voice called out to him, followed by Carson coming from out of the bushes. Oh thank god. At least someone else survived the crash. "Carson!" he said as he lowered his gun.

However, Rodney felt the urge to raise it again when Carson started to talk. Heaven? What in the hell was he talking about? Rodney furrowed his brow, and looked Carson over. He first looked to see the other man had a head injury. When he saw he didn't, Rodney's eyes ticked over the rest of Carson's body.

"Heaven? What are you talking about, Carson?" He stopped talking when he noticed Carson's clothes. "What's wrong with your clothes? You had your mission uniform on the last time I saw you. Did the jumper crash knock them off...and then you found new clothes in the bushes?"

None if this made sense. Crashes didn't cause people's clothes to change. Maybe they were in Heaven. Rodney his gun away and looked down at the small spots of blood on his hand. "Do you bleed in Heaven?" he asked.

Carson stared at Rodney as he looked him over before talking about him wearing different clothes and a...jumper crash. What in the bloody hell did he mean? What jumper crash?

"These were the clothes I was wearing, remember," he told him. "We weren't in a jumper crash. I operated on Doctor Watson to remove the tumor that ancient device had caused, but it exploded right after the hand off. I didn't know that you were--."

Suddenly, he saw that Rodney was bleeding, so he broke off and hurried over to take his hand in his, frowning as he looked at it. "I...don't think you do," he said. He looked around before looking down at his friend's hand again. "If we're not dead, where in the bloody hell are we?"

"No, they weren't!" Rodney said. He was getting upset that Carson didn't seem to believe him. There was something wrong. He reached his hand down and pressed it against the butt of his gun. "Exploding...what? Tumors? What are you talking about, Carson?"

When Carson hurried over to him, Rodney flinched a little. There was a chance this really wasn't Carson. However, when Carson took his hands in his, Rodney somehow knew this was Carson, but he was still confused. "I-I don't know," he said. He pulled one of his hands away and reached behind him to grab his tablet, but it wasn't there.

"The last thing I remember was being on the jumper! You were talking about your turtles, and I was uploading my hack so we could get through the Gate, and back to Atlantis," he said before he started to pace back and forth. He then stopped and looked at Carson. "Really? Exploding tumors?"

"Aye! You were the one that figured it out. The machine caused tumors to form in Doctors Hewston and Wat--why am I telling you this. Stop messing about, Rodney," Carson told him.

Sighing, he checked his pockets and pulled out a handkerchief, which he pressed to Rodney's hand. "Don't worry. It's clean," he assured him as he wrapped it around and tied it.

He didn't understand this all. Why was Rodney talking about everything that had occurred several months ago like it had just happened? "Rodney...your hack...that was went we were trying to get back to Atlantis from Earth. That was months ago," he told him. He reached up to check his head. "Did you hit your head when you landed?"

"I'm not messing around!" Rodney exclaimed as he waved his hands around. Carson was calling him a liar, and he didn't understand why. He wasn't one to lie about things like this and as Carson wrapped up his hand, Rodney found himself pouting a little.

"No, it was just moments ago. Why don't you believe me, Carson?" he asked before backing up. He narrowed his eyes a little and crossed his arms over his chest. "I think you hit your head and not me. Exploding tumors? Really, Carson, listen to yourself talk!"

Rodney took another step back and let out a sigh. Something wasn't right. He suddenly remembered a crude theory a colleague once had about different alternative realities. The scientist believed there was one spot in the universe where people from different realities could merge. Rodney hated the man and thought the theory was a load of crap, but what if it was true.

"Carson...I think we were caught in some sort of energy influx and sent here from different realities," he said before he reached back againn before remembering hs didn't have his tablet. "It would explain your unbelievable story."

Carson was starting to get annoyed. He knew Rodney could be stubborn when he didn't believe something, but he had been there. So when Rodney stepped back, he crossed his arms and stared at him.

As he started to talk about about them coming from different realities.

"Wait...what?" he asked in confusion. "First off, my story isn't unbelievable! It did happen. Second off...different realities. You mean you're from several months ago and I'm from now...several months from now...whatever?"

He shook his head. "You really don't remember Lucius coming back or you almost dying when that ancient device altered your DNA or you getting in trouble over Geldar?" At lot of strange things had happened in the time that Carson had been with the expedition, but this beat all of them.

"So...if that's true, and we're from two different points in time...where the bloody hell are we?"

Rodney raised his eyebrows when Carson gave him a confused look. He had to remind himself Carson wasn't a real doctor, and he wouldn't understand what he was saying. "Yes...alternative...realities," he slowly said, hoping Carson got it the second time. He then nodded. "Yes. That's what "coming from different realities" means, Carson. If we came from the same then I would've said same reality."

For being so smart, Carson was kind of slow sometimes.

Rodney started to look around but stopped when Carson started to name off all the things from his reality. "What? I got in trouble for Geldar? Who told? It was Sheppard, wasn't it?!" he huffed as he crossed his arms over his chest. "First he complains about me cheating, which I wasn't, then he squeals on me? Jerk."

All thoughts of using Sheppard for a science experiment flew out the window when Carson asked his question. "I don't know but I guess we should probably look around and see if we can find anyone else," he said. He pulled out his gun and looked at Carson. "Stay behind me since I have a gun."

They started to walk, however when a stiff breeze blew through and caused some bushes rustle, Rodney jumped back and stood close to Carson. "What was that?" he whispered.

"I'm not a moron, Rodney. There's no reason to talk to me like I'm five," Carson huffed. "I haven't exactly been involved in something like this before. Aliens, yes. Mind transfers, yes. But not alternate realities."

Reaching up, he rubbed the back of his neck and sighed when Rodney started complaining about John Sheppard probably getting him into trouble over Geldar. He definitely wasn't from his time period. "No, Colonel Sheppard didn't get you in trouble," he told him. "It was a wee bit hard for Major Lorne's team to miss all the statues and pictures of you when they arrived through the Gate."

He knew, though, that what had happened in his reality had opposed to Rodney's weren't important. They needed to figure out where they were and maybe get home. So he nodded at the other man and fell into step behind him. At least until the wind picked up, scaring Rodney out of his wits.

"It was the wind, Rodney," he told him, pointing to the nearby bushes. "It made the leaves rustle." Shaking his head, he looked around, frowning when he noticed when looked to be a group of buildings in the distance. "What's that?"

Rodney narrowed his eyes at Carson and huffed a little. "It could have been a wild animal! I was just trying to protect you," he lied. Deep down Rodney knew he was hoping Carson would protect him from whatever was lurking in the bushes. Wind or not, one could never be too careful. Furrowing his brow, he turned around when Carson spoke.

"They look like buildings but nothing like we've seen in the Pegasus galaxy," Rodney said. "They look too modern." He glanced at Carson and shrugged. "Guess we walk that way." Rodney started to walk, not realizing how close he was to Carson. His feet tangled with Carson's and he fell against him.

Rodney stared at him for a moment before untangling himself. "Never knew you had clown feet, Carson," he muttered before looking away to hide his blush. "Lets go."

Carson looked at Rodney with raised eyebrows. He was trying to protect him? "Well...thank you, Rodney," he said, patting his arm. "I'm sure any wild animal would have been well and truly scared off."

He knew his words sounded a bit snarky, but he did mean them. As they looked over into the distance, he left his hand on the other man's arm, nodding. "You're right. They don't look like anything I recall seeing there. Actually...they look like Earth buildings."

He was about to take a step forward when suddenly, he felt Rodney stumbling against him. Reaching up, he grabbed hold of him and stopped both of them from falling over. He took a deep breath and looked into Rodney's eyes...just as he mentioned him having clown feet.

"My feet are not clownish," he muttered before pulling back. He nodded curtly. "Aye. We should go."

Taking a step to the side, he started walking toward the building.

"Could have fooled me," Rodney found himself muttering before they started to walk again. He was starting to wish he had a scanner on him so they would know if the area was populated or not. Rodney didn't take well to not knowing what he was walking into. Whatever this place was, he really hoped they had equipment for them to use.

As they walked, they came near a garden of yellow flowers. Rodney suddenly felt a tickle in his nose and sneezed. And sneezed. And sneezed. With a small whine, he looked at Carson. "I'm allergic to those flowers!" he complained before sneezing again.

When the tickle moved down to his throat, Rodney's eyes widened. "Oh god," he said as his heart started to race. He covered his neck with his hands and made a gurgling noise. "Carson! I can't breathe!" Of course he could but Rodney was about to have a full on panic attack. "I'm dying! Oh god! I wanted to be killed by something cool - like a Wraith or a drone. Not by a flower!"

Isabel turned to look at her brother, the wind whipping her hair in front of her face, "What happens now, Max?"

Her brother stared off into the sky, "I have to save my son..."

Then a bright white light enveloped her, making it impossible for her to see. She felt like she was falling even though she was "standing" upright; there was nothing beneath her feet. And then she was face down on the ground.

She called out for her brothers before she even opened her eyes, "Max? Michael?"

She opened them and saw that she wasn't on the ground, but on top of a luscious green bush.

A bush? Like this? In the desert?

Isabel looked around. She was no longer standing outside the caves of Roswell, New Mexico. She was in some sort of forest. And she was terrified. What had just happened? Did it have something to do with Tess? But she was gone...

She stood up in a panic, now yelling the names of her family and friends, "Max! Liz! Michael...."

Carson looked over at Rodney and sighed softly as they walked along. He knew that the other man didn't like being in situations where he either didn't know or couldn't figure out what was going on, and sometimes he wished he could help. Unfortunately, all he had on him was his headset.

His headset.

Reaching up, he tapped it but there was no connecting sound, which meant it wasn't working. He sighed. Wherever they were, it was far, far out of range of Atlantis.

Just then, Rodney started sneezing and pointing to the nearby garden of flowers. "It's all right, Rodney," he said. "Come on, let's move away."

Before he could steer Rodney away, he started hyperventilating, and Carson had dealt with enough allergy attacks in his lifetime to know that it wasn't the flowers that were causing this part of it.

"Rodney...Rodney...calm down," he told him. "Come on. Sit down. You're not dying. I'm not going to let you."

Rodney seemed to be getting worse, though, so Carson tugged him over and forced him down onto a rock. Just as he did, he heard someone yelling nearby.

"Hello?" he called out. "Hello? Over here! We need help! Please!" He turned back to Rodney, taking hold of his shoulders and looking into his eyes, trying to reassure him. "It's all right. Look at me, love. It's going to be okay."

Rodney squeezed his eyes shut and whimpered a little. His heart was pounding in his chest, and he was sure the poison from the yellow flower had moved to his heart. "I'm...having...a...heart...attack," he breathlessly said. He was going to die in some strange place! Rodney didn't want to die there!

He allowed Carson to sit him down on a rock. Looking up at him, Rodney wanted to tell him to tell Jeannie and the rest of them he died doing something noble. "Tell everyone I died while saving a small child from a fire," he pushed out just as someone started to yell. He looked over and saw the blonde.

"Carson! No! Don't talk to her! She's an angel and she's going to take me away!" Rodney's breathing became more ragged and he found himself staring up at Carson. "I'm going to die and..." He trailed off when what Carson said registered with him. Did he just call him 'love'? Dropping his hands to his lap, Rodney took a deep breath.

"Did you just call me 'love'?" he asked, ignoring the way his stomach flipped as he hoped he had heard him right. However, he realized he was getting his hopes up and took a defensive stance again. "If you did, then don't do it again. I'm not one your little nurses you charm on a daily basis." He then pointed at the blonde. "Go call her love."

Isabel ran towards the other voices and found two men, one of whom seemed to be having a panic attack. She could relate. She wanted to walk up to the men and ask if she could help, though Max was the healer of the group... God, Max...

She focused herself. She didn't know these men. She didn't know where she was or how she got there. This could have something to do with Kivar or Nicholas. This could be a trap. So she kept her distance, her right hand twitching at her side.

Isabel tried to steady her voice as she spoke, "Who..who are you? Did you bring me here? Where are my family and friends?" Slow down, she thought to herself, give them a chance to respond.

But her thoughts kept racing. Was she alone here? Or were the others just somewhere else? She knew it was a horrible thing to think, but she didn't want to be stranded..kidnapped...whatever it was, by herself. Max was her brother, her home. And Michael.... She had even grown close to Maria, and Liz, and Kyle... She wanted them, no, needed them with her.

But in the back of her mind, Isabel knew that she was the only one here.

"Don't be daft, Rodney," Carson said as he took the other man's wrist to check his pulse. "You're not going to die. Just breath."

Unfortunately, his calling out to the woman who was nearby just ended up setting him off again. Carson sighed softly, wishing he had some sedatives with him because it was quite likely that was the only way he was going to get Rodney to calm down.

Although it appeared that his words actually had the desired effect, even if he hadn't meant to slip like that.

"Aye...I did," he said softly just before Rodney suddenly got defensive again. "Oh for crying out loud, Rodney. I'm not going to--."

The woman had reached them by then and was asking who they were. Between her and Rodney, Carson was starting to feel a headache coming on. This wasn't heaven. This was hell.

"I'm sorry, but I don't where your friends and family are," he told her after taking a deep breath. Reaching up, he started to rub Rodney's back, hoping to at least start calming him down. "My friend and I don't know why we're here either. We just sort of...appeared. My name is Carson Beckett. This is Rodney McKay. We were hoping we might be able to get some answers over where those buildings are."

Rodney looked up at Carson and narrowed his eyes a bit. He wasn't going to fall for his charm. He had seen Carson at work - getting all the nurses to swoon over him - and Rodney wasn't going to fall for it. So when Carson started to rub his back, Rodney stood and crossed his arms over his chest as he looked at the woman.

The woman Carson was currently hitting on. Rodney huffed and straightened his posture. He could be just as charming as Carson.

"We think we're in an alternative reality," Rodney said with his best charming smile. He crossed his arms and looked around for something to lean on. Rodney had seen Sheppard take a similar stance when hitting on a woman. However, there wasn't anything to lean against so Rodney dropped his hands to his side. "I have degrees in several different sciences so I know I'm right about the alternative realities."

He glanced at Carson and nodded before looking at the woman again. "My colleague is right. We should head toward the buildings and find someone," Rodney said as he grinned at her again. "Stay by me. I have a gun and I know how to use it."

The man named Carson explained that he and the other man, Rodney, had just been suddenly transported there. Just like her. He spoke of heading towards the buildings in order to find others, to ask what was going on. Part of Isabel was hesitant to go. What if the Max and Michael and the others were out in this wooded area? She didn't want to leave them behind. But if they weren't, then she'd be left alone....

Isabel responded to Carson, "I'm Isabel. And...I just got here, too. If you want to walk to the buildings, I'll go with you."

"...so I know I'm right about the alternative realities."

Isabel raised her eyebrows. Alternate realities? Were they serious? ...Then again, who was she to say anything was impossible. She was an alien-human hybrid from another planet.

"Stay by me. I have a gun and I know how to use it."

A small smile appeared on her face and she nodded, "Thanks, but I'll be all right. I can take care of myself."

When Rodney started trying to charm the young woman - Isabel - Carson sucked in a deep breath and fought to keep from rolling his eyes. Oh for heaven's sake. What was he trying to do?

What Rodney tried to do every time he saw a beautiful girl, he then thought. Impress her with his intelligence.

Sometimes, he wished he tried that hard with him.

Shaking his head, he rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm sure we all can take care of ourselves, but it might be a good idea to stay together. Rodney is the only one with a gun here, it looks like, and we don't know what we're going to run into," he said.

Rodney raised his eyebrows and looked at Isabel before shrugging. "Your funeral," he muttered before he pushed past Carson and him. Since he had the gun, Rodney figured he should be in front. "Stay behind me and don't touch anything."

God, he was starting to sound like Sheppard.

As they walked Rodney tried his best to keep his senses tuned to what was going on around them. He reached down and took his gun out of his holster, and glanced back at Carson and Isabel, his brow furrowing. Carson had to be sick if he wasn't trying to charm the girl with his flinty blue eyes and dimples.

"So, Isabel, where are you from?" Rodney casually asked. "Carson's from Scotland and I'm from Canada."

Rodney was opening his mouth to ask another question but stopped when he saw a familiar figure in the distance. "Carson," he said as he grabbed the other man's arm. He then pointed the gun ahead of them. "Is that Ronon?"

Isabel could tell Rodney wasn't exactly thrilled by her 'I can take care of myself' response, and that Carson didn't really seem to understand it, or maybe he just thought she was being stubborn. She couldn't explain to them how she protect herself, so she kept her mouth shut. She'd spent her entire life hiding her secret. That wasn't going to change while she was...well, wherever she was.

"...Carson's from Scotland and I'm from Canada."

"I'm from New Mexico..." She stopped talking when Rodney said something about Ronon. She was about to ask exactly what Ronon was when she looked off into the distance and saw another person.

Hope flared within her. If someone they knew was here, maybe someone like Max or Michael was here as well.
