Jack had common sense, he was just a little sheltered. Growing up had been a little difficult—the youngest child in a very well-to-do family, constantly being looked at and critiqued. He didn’t quite know who he was, really, having absolutely no sense of self. It had always been about the family name and reputation, not Jack himself. Being on his own and away from all of that was a shock to his system, as evidence by the wide-eyed look he still seemed to regard the world with.
“I’m just fine,” he said with an awkward smile. “I didn’t know of anyone to ask, and I’m a terrible dancer anyway. If some girl is charmed by that, for some reason, maybe she’ll pick me up here.” Jack decided not to tell her that he’d never actually been to a dance. It was far too pathetic.
