“Good to know,” he smiled, nodding, taking Sam’s word. He laughed, nodding some more, along with what Sam said. “Well hopefully you’re not a spy, or anything like that,” Jack joked, narrowing his eyes at Sam, pointing the mouth of his bottle at him. “Otherwise we’re all in trouble—me, especially.”
“Oh yeah?” Jack asked, perking up a little, looking at Sam with piqued interest. “Were your parents as unhappy about it as mine were?” he asked with a light laugh, even though he was still a little nervous about facing angry parents when—if ever—he went home. “I’m twenty,” he confirmed with a quick nod. “Almost twenty-one, though, so I’m not… THAT young.”
Okay, Jack. There were quite a few men who were a few years younger than him, but he still qualified as young. Very young.
And Jack was rather terrible as small talk as well. He certainly wasn’t judging Sam; not when the older man was his own Captain and seemed to be so friendly.
