"No," Damon said, more quickly and sharply than he had meant to. He evened his tone, and continued.
"I mean, I would likely just pull your body heat from you, and I definitely won't make you any warmer. You're better off with the blankets."
At least blankets didn't have to fight against their most basic instincts, just to keep from eating her. Damon knew he had to do something, so he got up and walked toward the fireplace. He hadn't even bothered to try and start a fire in the last few hours, seeing that each time he did, it just dashed Elena's hopes. He stroked his fingers over the flat side of the cord of wood, hoping to find something different, and sighing when it was just as damp as before.
