Much to L’s misery, he still had no answer by the time two hours had passed. He briefly entertained the thought of just letting it go and inviting Rachel downstairs to watch a movie with him. There was no reason why it had to be today but… If not today, when? Hurt as it did, for both her and his sake, this could not be stalled.
When he heard the knock on the door, L lifted his head and just stared at it for a long painful moment, feeling his stomach knot. This was it. There was no turning back now.
Still, he had to force the words out.
“The door is unlocked.” The detective said. His voice was quiet and solemn, but he was sure she could hear him. “You can come in.”
