WHEN: Thursday night
WARNINGS/RATING/STATUS: None/G/Finished log!
Fi knocked the pizza box closed and pushed it across the floor before she made a groan and fell to the side, sliding against the bed as she sprawled on the floor. “You really should have stopped me eating that last slice,” she groaned again. She scrunched up her eyes and made a face before she rolled over and looked up at Audrey. She’d arrived earlier that day and as excited as she was to have her best friend over she couldn’t help but feel the weekend was going to go by too quickly.
“Who else would eat it?” Aud asked, dropping to the bed and peering over the edge at Fiona. “I feel like I’ll explode if I so much as see another olive.” She paused, for a moment, looking down at her friend and smiling, happily. She hadn’t realised how much she’d missed Fi until she saw her that afternoon. She’d spent the last few weeks alternating between excitement at seeing Fi again and worry at the way they’d left things the last time they’d seen each other.
Maybe it had just been her but Audrey had felt an odd pull towards her friend, that last afternoon at school. She’d suspected for quite some time that she was gay, or at least attracted to girls. It wasn’t something she’d discussed with Fi, who was much more certain of herself and it wasn’t ever something she’d thought would happen with Fi, her best friend of all people, but there had definitely been a moment where Audrey had wanted, more than anything, to kiss Fi. It had apparently only been on her end though, because Fi hadn’t said a word about it, had been acting completely normal, so Aud was trying her hardest to forget all about the moment.
“Mmm, well, we could have shared with Mar,” she admitted, remembering the way her younger sister had eyed their pizza as she’d carried it upstairs. Almost as if on cue her younger sister thudded past the door, shouting something indistinct down stairs and Fi stole another glance at Aud as she looked toward the door. She’d been taking every opportunity to watch her, she hated to admit. Even if her nerves had mostly washed away when she saw the other girl she couldn’t help but thinking back to their....moment.
“I...don’t want to know,” she sighed, chuckling lightly as the thudding and noise got louder before her sister scurried downstairs. Fi pushed herself back upright and rested back against the bed, turning toward Aud.
“I like Marion,” Aud said, dropping to the bed, folding her arms and resting her head on them. Fi’s bed was comfy, and the long day was catching up with her, but she didn’t want to fall asleep, wanted to stay up and bask in Fi’s presence. “But I’m sorta glad that Anna and Ella aren’t yet teenagers.”
“It’s not bad all the time,” Fi admitted, toying idly with the abandoned controller beside her. “Then again, I’m gone most of the time so I can’t really say. Thank Merlin,” she joked, and flashed another grin at Audrey. “Easier to tolerate her this way. And you still have a bit for Anna and Ella to get there.”
Shaking her head, Aud stretched her feet out on the bed. “I can’t imagine the two of them going through that. At least they’ll be away at school for much of it, so that’ll keep them occupied. I feel like Hogwarts must be harder than Muggle school,” she stopped herself and frowned, hastening to add. “I mean, it’s more time consuming, not that like, Muggles are stupid or anything.”
“Some go away to school,” Fi pointed out, smiling at Aud to let her know she hadn’t said anything wrong. “And there’s still a lot to learn. Different stuff though...I was never very good at math so I guess I lucked out there.”
“Me neither!” Audrey exclaimed, glad that Fiona hadn’t taken her words personally. She rolled over slightly and patted the bed beside her, noting Fiona’s shifting on the floor. “Come on up, you look uncomfortable.”
“It’s not bad,” she argued, even as she climbed up beside her and stretched out. “As tough as Transfiguration is I’d still rather that then algebra.” She rolled her head to the side and smiled brightly at her friend, thrilled to be so close to her. “I liked English though, poetry and stuff.”
Aud shrugged, while she was somewhat familiar with the Muggle world, she’d never gone to school. “You wrote poetry?” she asked, curiously, rolling onto her back and tucking her hands under her head as she studied the posters covering Fi’s ceiling. “Or just read it?”
“Well...I tried to write poetry is probably a better way to say it,” she said hesitantly. “I was much better at reading it.” She rolled over and bumped into Aud, not aware she was as close as she was.
Tilting her head to the side, Aud rested it against Fi’s, smiling softly and dropping her arm down, around the other girl’s shoulders, loving the close proximity of her best friend. “D’you still have any? I’d love to read it. I always wanted to be a writer or a poet or an artist or something glamorous like that, but I can’t do any of those things.”
“Sorry,” Fi laughed brightly and shook her head “If I did have any still you’d see I can’t do any of that stuff either.” She was unable to keep the big smile off her face at their closeness and snuggled closer, only a small part of her wondering if this was just friendly or not. “I always wanted to be able to play an instrument, piano or something. Horrible at that stuff though, keeping rhythm? Not for me!”
“I can dance,” Aud pointed out, stretching one leg up above herself and pointing her toes. “Buuuut, that’s about it. I used to want to be a dancer, but not any more. I still like dancing, but I really feel like Healing is so much more important than that.” She tugged Fi closer, snuggling comfortably against her and pushing down the feelings bubbling up in her. Fiona was her friend. Her friend. That was it. “Plus, I like taking care of people. And I can help out with...” she trailed off and gestured in the air, finishing lamely. “Stuff.”
“I’d like to see you dance,” Fi said, twisting under her arm to get more comfortable. The question of what to do had been plaguing her more and more and she wasn’t able to keep all the worry from darkening her expression. “You’ll make a great Healer.”
“I can dance for you,” Audrey promised. “Later though, I’m comfy now.” Audrey smiled, glancing down at her friend, not failing to miss the expression on her face. “Fi?” she asked, worriedly, giving her a light squeeze.
“I’m comfy too,” Fi said, nodding at the offer to watch her dance later. She scooted against Aud as she squeezed her and looked up at the question. “Hm?”
“Alright?” she asked, twisting slightly to reach out and gently touch Fi’s cheek. “You looked sad. My dancing’s not that bad, I swear.”
Fi started to respond but faltered at her touch, smiling brightly instead and tilting her head. “Yeah, it’s just...I...it’s stupid really,” she changed her mind and shook her head.
Shaking her head emphatically, Aud twisted more, looking down at Fiona. “No, it’s not!” She assured her friend, her face serious as she watched the other girl.
“I just,” Fi sighed, breaking under Aud’s serious gaze. “I don’t know what I want to do. And there are OWLs and then I have to choose NEWTs and I have no idea.” The impending tests were weighing on her and she wasn’t even back at school yet, she hated that.
“That’s not stupid,” Aud said again, shaking her head and hugging Fi. “Maybe you could do something with animals! You do well in Care of Magical Creatures! Maybe a vet? Or you could raise puppies, like Gemma used to do!”
“Maybe. I do like puppies,” Fi raised a grateful smile to her. “They’d have to be Scotties or maybe Collies,” she joked, her usual bright expression falling back into face. “Something Scottish. It’s only right.”
Aud let out a little squeal at the image of tiny little Scotties running around grown up Fi’s flat. “That’d be so cute!” she giggled and stretched her feet out, wriggling her toes. “I vote puppy raising! If I get a vote, that is.”
“Of course you get a vote!” Laughing happily, Fi pictured the different dogs she could raise. “Fiona Kemp, Puppy Wrangler. Has a certain ring to it, don’t you think?”
Nodding seriously, Aud wasn’t quite able to keep the smile from her face, hard as she tried. “I think you should get business cards. I could help you wrangle puppies... if you needed it.”
“I don’t think that would be wrangling them so much as just snuggling them,” Fi said, her expression sincerely thoughtful. “Does that count? Maybe I should think of it more as a hobby.”
“Puppy snuggler?” Aud took advantage of the timeliness of the statement to snuggle closer to Fi. “That doesn’t sound nearly as exciting as puppy wrangler, though.”
“I don’t know, I think puppy snuggling sounds well exciting. Or at least a lot of fun. And fun is safe, you know what you are getting. Exciting isn’t necessarily always a good thing, you know.”
Audrey shrugged, idly tracing patterns along Fi’s arm. “How much trouble could you get in wrangling puppies? They’re so tiny! What’re they gonna get into?”
Fi paused for a moment, listening to the squeak of Lenny’s wheel and followed Aud’s pattern with her mind. She found her voice after only a second however and tried to ignore the way the touch made her stomach flip slightly. “That’s just it! They’re tiny! They’re puppies! What couldn’t they get into?”
“Tall things,” Audrey said, after a moment, her voice serious. “Cos they’re so little. Just make sure everything’s up high and you’ll be fine!”
“Hey,” Fi yelped, her tone one of mock indignation, and poked Audrey lightly in the side. “Just because they are tiny doesn’t mean they can’t make trouble. Look at Lenny, he can get into anything.”
Aud shook her head and wriggled, snuggling closer to Fi. “Puppies are different than Lenny. He can climb. Puppies can’t,” she paused, and studied Fi, her faux seriousness broken by a huge yawn. “Are you sure you know what puppies are?”
“Yeah,” Fi fought in vain to keep a straight face, the corners of her lips fought to twitch into a smile. “Those of the little things with beaks and wings, right? Bring the post?”
Wrinkling her nose happily, Aud only just managed to swallow her smile. “Yes, exactly. They can’t climb!” Unable to keep her face straight, Aud moved and buried her face against Fi’s shirt, hoping her smile wouldn’t come through in her voice.
“But they...” Fi trailed off as Aud pressed up against her and found she was suddenly intensely aware of how close she was to the other girl and how heavy her own breathing seemed all of a sudden. Her stomach gave another little flip and she stared firmly up at the poster above them. “They can fly...so...can get into stuff and all.”
Audrey yawned widely, comfortable in Fiona’s arms. She loved it here, with Fi, and thought she could spend the rest of her life snuggled against the other girl. “I think,” she said, curling up slightly. “We might be mistaken about what puppies are.”
“Maybe you are, but I-” Fi started to laugh but yawn instead, prodding Aud again for getting her started on it. “I know what they are,” she finished and turned a sleepy smile up toward her friend. “Not my fault you seem confused.”
“Not my fault you’re mad!” Audrey responded, rolling away and grabbing a pillow to snuggle with for a moment, instantly regretting the move and twisting back towards Fi.
“Not mad,” Fi said, too sleepy to stop her hand from reaching out and brushing back a piece of Audrey’s hair, moving it away from her face. “I’m the only sane one.”
Aud let out a little happy murmur at the touch of Fi’s fingers. “Pizza makes me sleepy,” she said, after a moment, a part of her deeply embarrassed at her non sequitur, burying her face against Fi to cover the blush she hoped wasn’t crossing her cheeks.
Fi’s brain crashed again and she glanced down at the top of Aud’s head for a moment as she tried to think of a response. “Maybe we should go to sleep?” She said, making an involuntary squeak when a thought popped into her head that certainly wasn’t about sleeping.
“But ‘m comfy here,” Aud tipped her head back and smiled sleepily up at Fiona, comfortable in her arms, but not comfortable in the clothes she’d worn to travel in. She was, however willing to put up with it to stay where she was.
“Didn’t say you had to move,” Fi pointed out, yawning again.
Humming lightly, Aud smiled and wriggled around til she was lying the right way on the bed. “Good,” she murmured, reaching down to tug a blanket over them. “‘ll change later,” she assured Fiona as she snuggled back against her, her eyes slipping shut.
Chuckling softly, Fi curled toward Aud and felt her own heavy eyes close. “Sure,” she teased, moving her head along the pillow to get comfortable, smiling at the sound of Aud’s breathing already hinting she’d fallen asleep. “Night, Aud,” she whispered, sleep threatening to slur her words as she started to lose consciousness as well.
