Who: John Dawlish & Lucius Malfoy
What: Scene Lottery! (Prompt: Petty.) Lucius has to come into the Ministry for his parole status meeting.
Where: Ministry of Magic, London
When: This afternoon
Warnings/Rating: Snark?/Low-ish
Checking in with ex-convicts was not John's favorite part of his job. He didn't have to do it very often - not many people warranted attention from a fully-qualified Auror, not unless they were particularly violent or otherwise of interest to the Ministry - but it took up an entire afternoon every other Friday of his life. Some days went better than others. He liked to see people on their way to success, leaving the system behind (and leaving him behind) for better things, for good.
But he rarely got those sorts of cases. Today was a fairly representative sample: he'd had one young man who looked more or less ready to release into society, two people he expected would come back to him on time next month and probably find a light at the end of the tunnel, one no-show, and now ... Lucius Malfoy.
As far as John was concerned, once a man was acquitted, that was that; the Ministry had spoken. Nothing Malfoy had allegedly got up to twenty years ago bothered him at all. But the fact was that he'd been convicted of breaking and entering and of attempting to burgle the Department of Mysteries, and that was that. It didn't matter who you were, it didn't matter what sort of strings you were able to pull. There was no reason such a person shouldn't be expected to come in and submit to the usual questions. That was how things worked.
Somehow, as he sat behind his desk listening to the minutes tick by and churning out some mindless paperwork, he began to doubt that was how Malfoy would view things.
