It was the familiar weight that Jimmy felt added extra to his shoulders- Alexander. It had been there since he befriended the boy and had only let off during those odd weeks that they stopped speaking. Even then it had never completely gone away. Now it was back full force and Jimmy felt it. He was apologizing again, making excuses again, feeling this way again. His eyes closed and he admitted again how sick of it all he was. But he was strangely not angry. If anything he felt strangely detached and robotic- and this scared him.
For a week, he'd wondered if he'd wake up to the latest delayed eruption of Mount Alexander, spewing his hate and fear all over the journals in such a way that would drop Gryffindor's point values into the negatives. He was pissed as Hell at that- at himself and Alexander- for ruining the chances of Gryffindor getting the House Cup this year.
The hollow thunk of the bridge under his feet roused his darkened spirits and Jimmy thought of Geoff and Ron and brightened some. Demelza and him flying, he thought of that too. And Dennis... perfect, kind, loving Dennis, curled up around him in their little happy world. Which was a very far cry from the bleak he felt now. Jimmy stopped halfway across the bridge and wasn't sure he could keep going. Maybe he should have left Alexander to his fate in Hogsmeade.
Only he was still his friend. And Jimmy apparently didn't give up on friendships very easily. So his feet carried him forward again until he was in the tiny holdfast tower on the other side of the bridge. He picked himself up by his hands and sat on the earthworks. And he waited, slumped and leaning on his chin.
