mobius & asriel
warnings (bird violence, cursing) • downtown bar strip • wednesday, evening

So much for having a normal day for their date.

Asriel was hardly surprised, though. Ever since he'd been brought to San Francisco, he had been quick to discover that life here was consistently chaotic. Naturally, a part of Asriel liked that. He hated for any part of his life to be boring and stale.

But as much as he enjoyed all of the craziness , he couldn't help but to wonder if it were all just meant to be a distraction. It had been months now since he had arrived to this city. And now what? Was he truly doomed to be stuck here for all time?

If he were, there was one silver lining to all of this and his name was Mobius.

Their last date had gone well but it had been over-shadowed by their curses from that morning's evil breakfast. While they had both hoped that this time, things would be quiet for them, they knew their chances were slim.

"All things considered," Asriel drawled on as the two of them stared out from the bar windows in the old pub that he'd found for them called the 'Delirium'. "It could be worse," he finished as he looked over to Mobius with a side-ways grin. They had just managed to make it inside earlier but now Asriel was wondering how they were going to leave without getting a face full of beaks and gross bird feet.

Typically Mobius was the type to be a bit more of a rule follower, and honestly when Tony had said that they really shouldn’t try going out, he had honestly considered it. It’s not like he and Asriel have a bad time when they stay in, but Mobius was getting bored and felt cooped up and really, he’s attracted to chaos for a reason. Besides, it’s not like the birds are in the pub, right? All they had to do was make it there.

Needless to say, after just making it inside, Mobius second guessed that decision. Much like Asriel, he wasn’t sure how they were going to make it back. “It definitely could’ve been, but only just barely. I swear they were actively going for our eyes.” Mobius shook his head. Birds are not supposed to be that intelligent. “Remind me not to tell Tony. He did try to warn me, but you, apparently, make me try new and dangerous things.” He smirked at Asriel. It was true, but really he didn’t blame him at all.

Even Stelmaria thought the situation was out of hand and she enjoyed having bird for lunch. This, however, was a ridiculous amount and they were hardly behaving normally. "Perhaps the avian community is simply fed up with us bipedals," Asriel said with a snicker as he peered out of the windows. It was partly a joke but on the other end, those cuts and gashes over their skin that the birds had given them were quite real. They weren't deep, at least. Still, they stung. Asriel picked at one in particular on his hand. Stelmaria came to lick it briefly before looking outside again as if she expected the birds to break through.

For now, they were safe.

It was later that they had to worry about.

"Tony is a smart man. I'm sure he stayed in." Asriel couldn't stop the cheeky grin on his face that followed as he turned to look at Mobius. "Unlike us. But we thrive in chaos. Or at least, I know I do. The world is far more interesting that way. Shall we then enjoy a few drinks while we wait out the bird storm? I know someone promised me an uncoordinated dance."

“You know, I wouldn’t blame them. Though really they should be thanking us. If we hadn’t gone out, who would they have attacked?” He looked around at the bar then. Surprisingly not only were they open, but they weren’t even the only people in there. It would seem that Asriel and Mobius weren’t the only ones crazy enough to go outside.

Mobius smiled at Asriel, amusement clear on his face despite the situation. “Every version of him is annoyingly intelligent. Hell, I’m usually more intelligent than this. I can get down with chaos, but large amounts of birds trying to peck my eyes out has made me second guess my life choices right now.” He was half joking about that as he raised a hand, calling over a waitress. “If you thought the bird attack was bad, just wait until you see my dancing.”

Asriel grinned at Mobius' continuous optimism. Their situation was far from perfect and yet, here they both were smiling and enjoying themselves just the same. "Let the birds have their fun attacking other poor souls. If they get in here, Stelmaria will take care of them." And the snow leopard made a huff in agreement as she turned to follow them into the bar.

The no-frills bar wasn't much like the tourist-catching flashy pubs that were around the city and that was exactly why Asriel had chosen it. The pool table had seen better days and the windows hadn't been cleaned in probably years but there was still a certain charm to it. And there may not have been a dance floor exactly but they could make one for just the two of them.

"First, a beer. Then we'll see if we can some rhythm in those legs of yours." Asriel settled in the dingy table they'd picked, one leg outstretched so he could settle a boot next to Mobius'. It might have seemed like a small thing but for him, it was a big step. Physical affection in private was one thing. Doing it in public was another. And still, Asriel was growing bolder. More comfortable. "I'm guessing there weren't many parties at the TVA."

It was something Mobius was good at, trying to look on the bright side. Of course, much of the time it was an act, something he did to try and keep his and everyone else’s spirits up. It was not impossible to take him down a notch though. Finding out he was a variant had really rocked his world, but it had caused him to reevaluate his life and his goals, which he supposed wasn’t all that terrible.

This was also a far from perfect date, but something about that made it even more perfect. The birds helped nothing, but that wasn’t about to stop Mobius from enjoying a night out with his favourite person. Sure, they probably should’ve listened to Tony, but Mobius spent so much of his life listening to others and believing he was doing the right thing when he absolutely wasn’t that he couldn’t help but ignore for once (or maybe twice). He’d certainly dealt with worse than a few irate birds before.

The bar was definitely a dive bar, but Mobius liked the atmosphere. Sometimes he enjoyed going out to a fancy restaurant, but there was really something to be said about places like this as well. He thought maybe if he hadn’t managed to break Asriel’s foot by the end of the night, he might convince him to have a game a pool before they left.

“A beer first is the only option. I’m not sure I could manage this at all without at least a bit of a buzz.” He smiled as Mobius stretched out his leg, knowing what a big deal it was for him and feeling quite honoured that he would do it for him. Maybe he could also talk him into a make out session in the washroom before they left. That seemed like the exact perfect way to end a date at a place like this. “If by not many you mean none, then yes, you are exactly right.”

Asriel was the opposite; he was a realist. Well. He had become one. Perhaps in his youth, the fountains of hope had been much fuller for him. But that was so long ago and so much had happened since. He was not a child any longer. Believing in the best of things was not part of his nature anymore. But..

Mobius was starting to bring him 'round to a more positive way of thinking. Fancy that?

"Need a bit of liquid courage to join me on the dance floor?" Asriel chuckled but his eyes were full of affection. There was no real dance floor to speak of, really. They were in some dingy bar that barely had space to speak of. But it was enough. And it wasn't like Asriel was complaining about the close proximity. If anything, he used it to his advantage, cozying up to Mobius as much as possible, in spite the two of them being very much out in public.

It wasn't hard to believe that parties or any sort of celebration of any kind were much allowed at the TVA. From what he understood and had heard of it from Mobius, the place sounded downright horrid. The last place Asriel would want to find himself in. "Perhaps if I follow you there then, if we're ever allowed to be free of this place, we can start new traditions. Although something tells me I wouldn't last a week there without getting into some sort of trouble." Asriel's grin became mischievous. "Something tells me that's why you like me, though," he had to add as he bumped their ankles together.

Their differences only made Mobius think about that old saying about opposites attracting. One of the many things he loved about Asriel was his realism. It seemed to make for a good balance between them, not letting Mobius hide too much from the truth while adding some positivity to Asriel’s view. Or at least that’s what he hoped. At very least he hoped that the positivity he tried to add to Asriel’s view gave him some peace, and something to feel good about.

“More than a bit I’d say,” Mobius said with a grin. “Really, I don’t think it will be long until you realize the error of your ways here, and I’ll deal with that much better with a few drinks under my belt.” It wouldn’t make his dancing any better, but he really doesn’t think there is anything that could make it worse either. Mostly the drinks will just help with his pride. “Maybe we should start with a slow dance, just to save your toes.”

The TVA wasn’t really known for anything but its business, that is for sure. The fact that Ravonna would even share a drink with him on occasion was odd enough. That was about as much downtime as any of them ever got. “I hope if we ever get out of here, that we can follow each other somewhere completely different. I really don’t want to go back to the TVA, even though it has changed a lot recently.” The last thing Mobius would ever wish for was to have Asriel locked up in a place like the TVA. All he really wanted to was to be free of all the craziness around here and just live a nice, if not quiet, life with Asriel.

Attraction could come in the form of many things, physical or not. In truth, Asriel had found the other man's appearance more than appealing. Had he not made that so embarrassingly obvious from the start? Even Marisa had seen it, plain as day. But no one knew him as she did. Although he was keen to letting the man beside him know him better. Even if the thought of opening himself up was a terrifying one.

"A slow dance? What a romantic you are," Asriel mused as he watched Mobius gather enough liquid courage. Thankfully, the beers had come fast and even Asriel put away half a glass in one go. He asked for another round to be sent over quickly. It was just a twinge nerve-wracking to be out in public still for him like this. But he kept his focus on Mobius and that kind smile of his. The smile that made him feel too many things. Was this what it felt like to let one's heart be open to another?

And there went Mobius confessing to wanting to follow him. Asriel couldn't help briefly wonder just how far he would be willing to go. Don't ruin the moment, Stelmaria chastised him from her spot nearby.

"How about just following me to the dance floor?" Asriel finished that second beer and stepped away from the window. He extended his hand out, nervous but eager.

It wasn’t so much that Asriel wasn’t obvious about his attraction to Mobius, but more that Mobius wasn’t expecting to see it. He’s equally attracted to him, and was right from the first moment he saw him in person, but at first he’d not thought he had a chance in hell. Then they’d actually started talking, hanging out and Mobius had been a goner. Intelligent, handsome and a nice chaotic streak. What more could he ask for?

“Oh please, like you didn’t already know that.” Mobius scoffed and laughed even as a light blush crept across his cheeks. He’s certain Asriel was teasing him, but he couldn’t seem to stop the blush anyway. “But if it’s… too much. That’s okay.” He knew how hard it was for Asriel, how hard it would be for anyone to suddenly be out after living somewhere it was not okay to be gay (or bi or queer or however one might identify) and he wanted to give him an out. If it was too much, too soon, he’d also happily dance with him in one of their living rooms.

The answer to that, of course, was that he’d follow him anywhere. It wasn’t like Mobius really belonged anywhere anymore. Despite having Loki here, he felt a bit like he was getting in the way a lot with his friend. It probably wasn’t true, but it didn’t stop Mobius from feeling like they were going their separate ways. And now that he had Asriel, someone he adored more than he ever could’ve imagined, well yes, he would do whatever it took to stay with him.

He didn’t say any of that though, just smiled and nodded in response as he downed his own beer, hiccuping for a second due to the speed with which he drank and taking finally Asriel’s hand. “I can do that.”

Asriel didn't think he would ever tire of that red splash of color appearing over Mobius' face. He had started to notice there were different shades depending on how embarrassed his lover was under whatever attention was given to him. It was a marvel that no one had swept the man off his feet until now. Granted, he couldn't imagine much fraternizing happening under the watchful eye of the TVA.

Not that rules had ever stopped him before.

"It's not too much at all," Asriel was quick to answer as he pulled Mobius a little further into some open space for them. He realized he said that too quick. It wasn't a lie. But it wasn't entirely the truth. It was a lot but it wasn't more than Asriel was willing to take on, if only to get Mobius to smile at him as he showed off those supposedly atrocious dance moves. "Come then, show me those hips are good for more than moves in the bedroom."

Mobius had warned him, though so Asriel wanted to start off with a slow dance for them to gauge exactly how terrible his paramour actually was. With one pair of hands joined, he used the other slip around Mobius' waist and pull him in closer so that they could begin to sway. "And yes, I did get the sense you were a romantic from the start. You spoke of wanting to travel when we first met. You mentioned being envious of your friend's collections before. I thought you a kindred spirit from then on."

Maybe one day Mobius would get used to this and stop blushing quite so much, but it’s unlikely he’ll ever stop blushing at all, not with how Asriel looks at him. That was something he didn’t think he could ever get used to. He wasn’t sure he wanted to either.

The real truth about personal relationships at the TVA was that Asriel was right, they would’ve been looked down on. Most didn’t even have friends, forget lovers, but even if that hadn’t been the case, Mobius had never really considered it an option. He knew some thought he and Ravonna had something going on, but that had never been the case. There might have been people interested in him, but he’d been too busy, too distracted, to notice any of it. It was more that than any sort of desire not to break rules.

Mobius tried to reign in his smile at Asriel’s response. The truth was, he very much wanted to dance with him. Despite how bad he was at it, despite the concern that he very much could injure him with his inability, the idea of holding him close and swaying to the music was something he very much wanted to do. Even if there was clear hesitation in Asriel’s response… or rather in how quickly he responded, the fact that he wanted to try spoke volumes to Mobius.

As Asriel pulled him in closer, Mobius found his own arms slipping around Asriel’s waist. They start to sway and almost instantly, Mobius manages to step on Asriel’s foot. He let out a soft huff, annoyed with himself already even as he was amused at his own incompetence. “Well, you got me there. I am definitely a romantic, which is why this is mortifying. I always wanted to be the type to sweep my lover off his feet, not step all over them.” Mobius pressed his forehead to Asriel’s shoulder, partly out of shame and partly because it meant he could see their feet. “We should still plan some sort of trip, if you’re still able to walk after this.”

It was telling, wasn't it? Just how Asriel felt for Mobius. It was clear in the way he looked at him, like there was no one else in the room. No one else in the world, really, save for him. Perhaps it was dangerous for someone to have him in such a thrall. He had thought it a spell of some kind, in the beginning. How could anyone ever make him feel this way? How could anyone distract him so much to steal his every thought? His mind told him it was only physical obsession. He was overtaken and overwhelmed by his feelings because he hadn't felt them in so long.

But how could what they be anything but real and true when being with Mobius felt like... home?

"Ah-" Asriel winced, then laughed at Mobius' first misstep. "Careful, darling. Don't think too much on it. Let's go slow." It hadn't hurt that much, really. And if the price of getting to dance with Mobius was a couple sore feet, Asriel was more than glad to pay it. This close, the two of them moving together, it was well worth it. He could see that Mobius wanted to try with him and that was more than enough to keep going.

He turned his head, his smile softening as he kept his voice low for Mobius to hear. "You are even more romantic for your gallant efforts. You will learn and you will be amazing. You only need a good teacher. Lucky for you, you have me." In more ways than one but Asriel felt that was understood. Or at least, he hoped so. He kept their pace even, even helping Mobius to count the steps if he needed. "I think you only need more practice and then you'll be spinning me around until I'm properly and utterly wooed."

Believe it or not, Mobius understood that. He felt the same, really, all distracted from the rest of the world while they were together. Though he hadn’t thought it was magic, per se, he had noticed it was something different, something special and something he very much wanted to explore. He felt seen and appreciated and for once like he didn’t need to be in control the whole time. It didn’t hurt that Asriel was very easy on the eyes either.

They just worked. That was what it came down to. It wasn’t just one thing, not just physical, not just mental or emotional, it was all of it. There were only a very few people that Mobius had been close with at all before meeting Asriel and with everything they’d gone through, he could imagine them thinking of each other of anything other than friends or family. But Asriel was that and more. He felt wanted and loved and like he might actually be interesting. And he wasn’t about to give it up for the world.

“Sorry,” he muttered, tone a mix of embarrassment and amusement. He had tried to warn him after all. “If I don’t think about it, things will definitely get worse.” That probably wasn’t true, but it felt like it was. Control had always been a friend to Mobius and for some reason, it failed him here. At least if they were moving slowly, he probably couldn’t do too much damage, could he?

“Oh, I’m definitely lucky.” He meant that, though there is still amusement in his voice. The idea of Asriel teaching him to dance is a very nice one. Well, anything that meant he got to spend more time with him was a nice one, thought he wasn’t looking forward to possibly doing his feet some damage. Then again, the idea of nursing him back to health wasn’t a bad idea either, if things went wrong. “Wait, you mean you’re not already properly and utterly wooed? Damn, I really need to up my game.”

It had always been a game for Asriel; love. Such a thing couldn't be believed to be real, after all. Yes, he had seen slivers of it in his childhood. Parents were meant to love their children, weren't they? If any asked, of course his parents would say that they felt that very affection for him. But it was only part of the play. Only an act. Parents did not love their children more than a stable breeder would love his prized stallion. They were only the means of continuing on a legacy; the price of a well-known name. Frivolous and scandalous behaviors were done in the name of love that would jeopardize such a line.

It was only until Lyra that he realized this was all a lie. Oh, he'd loved her since the first moment he laid eyes on her. She was perfect in every way. It wasn't her fault her father was... well, so unsuited for parenthood. He'd done his best for her. It was somehow difficult not to think of her when he was with Mobius. Strange how much he wondered what the two of them would think of each other. Would Lyra take to him as quickly as he had? Or would she think of him as just old and bossy as she did most adults? Asriel liked to think that she would like him very much. After all, she did take after him. Sometimes, too much.

Mobius seemed to have a handle on his steps. Sort of. It looked like he knew them well enough but somehow there was a disconnect between his mind and his feet, like they just didn't want to go where he wanted them to. Asriel could see he was frustrated and though he found it just as adorable as any of the other variety of emotions Mobius displayed, he felt for him in the situation. "You don't have to be a perfect dancer, you know. Sometimes there's more enjoyment in not being so. Of course, you could be pretending to be so terrible just to get my hands on you," he added with a light teasing smile.

Asriel did feel hopelessly and delightedly wooed. More than he would ever want to admit. The smile on his face only grew bigger the longer they danced and the more times Mobius stepped on him. "If you upped your game any more, I think I might end up a puddle on the floor." But just to show that he wasn't about to be outdone, Asriel let his hands wander down Mobius' back where his fingers could playfully tug at the hem of his pants. Yes, there was definitely an ass grab.

It wasn’t something Mobius could really speak to. Not love in general, but a parental love. He knew about Don’s kids, of course, and when he’d seen them playing in the front yard of a house with his variant, there had been a tug, a clench in his heart that let him know even if he didn’t have all of those memories, he did still feel something for those two boys. But thought it was definitely akin to love, he felt separated from it, like he was watching it happen in a movie or something. He also doesn’t have any real memories of his own parents. So he really had no idea what a parent’s love was like. Though he seemed to have turned out fairly good so he had to assume they were alright.

What he did know, was how he felt for friends, people at the TVA who felt more like family. That was definitely love. He cared more for all those people than he imagined possible and with Asriel, it felt like that but so much more intense. And to have those feelings returned, well, there was nothing quite like it in all of human experience. That knowledge made him wonder even more about Asriel’s family. More specifically about Lyra. He would bet she was already her own person, not listening to anyone and doing whatever she wanted. He would expect nothing less from the child of Asriel and Marisa.

For the most part, Mobius liked to think he was pretty well co-ordinated. It wasn’t like he fell down a lot or tripped over things or was generally clumsy, but for some reason when music was added, he was suddenly a complete and total klutz. His nerves probably don’t help and he had to wonder which came first. He’d just always somehow known that he was bad at this. It wasn’t like he went dancing all the time at the TVA, but just like he’d known about the wonders of a jet ski, he knew he couldn’t dance. “Honestly, I’d settle for not breaking your toes.” He huffed out a laugh and looked up at Asriel again. “And I’m pretty sure I don’t need to pretend to get your hands on me.”

Asriel didn’t need to admit it, Mobius could see it on his face, in the way he looked at him. He didn’t need Asriel to say it, he just needed him to keep looking at him like that. Mobius gasped and then chuckled as he felt strong hands grip his ass. “Well, we wouldn’t want you to end up a puddle, I bet that would be hard to clean up.” Just to show he wouldn’t be outdone by the ass grab, Mobius slid his hands under the hem of Asriel’s shirt and teased the edge of his pants, as if he were threatening to put his hands into said pants for a skin on skin grab, but he just teased it, not actually pushing that far… yet.

Caring for others did not always come easily for Asriel. His heart and mind had been hardened over the years, through the actions of others and also by his own choice. It only seemed logical to numb oneself in a world that was so cold. But he wasn't completely unfeeling. There were still good hearts out there. So many of them, it gave one hope that maybe a cold world could be melted.

And that hope had grown a little brighter when he'd met Mobius.

Asriel winced again when Mobius 'found' his foot again, even though he tried to hide it. "Someone does need dance lessons -Ow- I mean, oh," he said with a kind chuckle. It wasn't that bad, truly. Even if it were, he didn't regret a single step. He still had his hands on Mobius which was what made it all worth it. A fact that Mobius already knew. Another laugh escaped Asriel. And maybe a bit of a blush once Mobius' eyes were on him again and not on their fumbling feet. "Am I that obvious?"

Embarrassingly.

He pretended to be absolutely scandalized when he felt Mobius' fingers teasing the hem of his slacks with his mouth dropped open and pretending to search the bar for outraged faces (well, maybe not so much pretending, one did still have to be careful even in the most accepting of cities) before letting those blue eyes fall back on Mobius. "You didn't mind the mess we made after fishing."

Asriel was hardly the first person like that Mobius had ever met. Sometimes he wondered if his own more open personality attracted those more closed off. Almost like they wanted to open up, at least to him, but no longer knew how. Or maybe Mobius was just approachable. He’d never really questioned it before, even if he did tend to use it when needed.

Not that he was using Asriel for any purpose. He just genuinely liked him right from the beginning. The first time they’d spoken he’d been enamoured quite quickly. He’d felt so lost, knowing of a few of the other people here, but not really knowing them. Other than Loki, who had been missing when he first arrived and then had felt distant after his return. That had hurt more than he’d expected, but then he’d met Asriel and things had begun to turn around.

Asriel’s attempt at hiding the wince didn’t work and Mobius found himself wincing in simpathy. “I am sorry. We can stop any time.” Really, as much as he wanted to be this close to Asriel, he really hated the idea that he was hurting him. The laughter did help to ease his mind a little bit and he relaxed a bit (which not so surprisingly lead to Mobius stepping on Asriel’s feet just a little less). “Oh yeah, you’re not hiding anything.” Mobius could help but tease him. It was too fun seeing his reaction.

But nothing beat the reaction he got next, even if he was a little concerned he had pushed things a little too far when Asriel looked around the room. “There was absolutely nothing I minded about that day. In fact, it was the exact opposite and if I’m honest, I would do it all again. In fact, we should do it again. As soon as possible.”

What little he knew of Loki, Asriel could see that there were a few similarities between them. Maybe more than he would want to admit. They hadn't had the chance to speak much. The self-proclaimed god (because Asriel couldn't be Asriel if he didn't show disdain for all 'supreme' beings) hadn't divulged much information and seemed to find his attention elsewhere most days. Not that Asriel minded. He was not friends with Loki. Mobius was. If anything, he may have grown jealous over their bond. Although, perhaps if he'd known how Mobius felt about the absence of his friend, he may have intervened a bit more to have him around.

But the main thing the two of them had in common was not a trait of their own. It was a seemingly magical collective of traits in someone else entirely; Mobius the Timeline Protector.

"Stop? Don't you dare!" Asriel was quick as he snuck a kiss to Mobius' cheek, their movements briefly put off by the action. But he didn't care. They didn't need to be perfect. Ever. "I guess I should be grateful you aren't part centaur, at least," he joked.

His grin grew smug and even smugger still at Mobius' confession. Anyone listening would have put two and two together but no one was listening. No one cared what they were doing. They were all too busy doing whatever it was that THEY were doing. "As soon as possible, hm?" Asriel moved so he could give Mobius a spin. He lifted his arm and twirled him around until he could pull him back in tight against him, that smile getting cockier with each step. "Shall we cut this short and head back then? I think I'd like to try that again too."

Though it was pretty obvious that Asriel and Loki had some similarities, Mobius didn’t really think it was all that obvious. They both had a bit of a dark past and would do anything to get what they thought they deserved and what they thought was necessary. But to Mobius, Asriel was actually more serious. Not that they didn’t have a good time, that they couldn’t laugh together, but when it came to important things, Asriel could sit down and have a serious conversation with him. He felt like Asriel has and would open up to him and hear him out when he needed to talk himself. Loki, at least lately, had felt closed off, like he was hiding things and didn’t trust him. It wasn’t really a surprise that Loki might act like that, but Mobius had never thought he’d act like that with him.

But really, when it came down to it, he’d really never met anyone quite like Asriel, some similarities aside. He found him fascinating, intelligent and like someone he couldn’t imagine getting bored of. He was the perfect mix of mischief and seriousness. Someone he could confide in and joke around with. And no one had ever felt him feel more attractive, more desired. Even if there had been a time when maybe he’d thought similarly about Loki, (not that this was a conscious thought) it was clear that those feelings would never be reciprocated. And now he didn’t need to think of it because he had everything he wanted right here, with the man currently holding him close and allowing him to break his toes.

“Or part elephant,” Mobius pointed out, teasing slightly. Sure, things could be worse, but it was clearer than ever that he was never going to be the next Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire.

Mobius huffed out a laugh as Asriel suddenly spun him, keeping control in the move so that even with a slight stumble, Mobius looked almost graceful for a moment. As he was pulled back in tight to Asriel’s chest, his hand came up to land on his peck as he looked at him with a smile. “Yeah, we should definitely do that.”

Birds be damned, he wanted to go home.

Serious? His father would have rolled in his grave. Asriel had lived most of his youth being anything else. Although, Mobius wasn't entirely wrong. When it came to matters he held dear and thought important, he swung very heavily that way. Some could say that he was too serious in other 'eccentric' regards, in things he wasn't supposed to have an interest in. That often led him into trouble. But if there was one thing everyone knew about Asriel Belacqua was that he was a hard man to pin down.

Unless you had two left feet, apparently.

"You would make a remarkable elephant, actually. Did you know they can sense danger coming from nearly thirty kilometers away through their feet? They're beautiful creatures. The largest land mammal too. For such great beasts, however, they are quite sensitive for animals. They're like big dogs. Pack animals led by a matriarch. The males are often on their own or in much smaller groups together. They-" Asriel stopped when he realized he had nearly started rambling almost every little fact that came to his mind about elephants. "Apologies," he chuckled. "My tongue seems to be more loose with you than others."

At least Mobius was only happy to move from the dance floor and back to the apartments. There was only one slight problem. Taking care of the tab, wasn't it. They were paid up quickly enough and ready to leave. Only, Asriel hesitated before leaving. His eyes kept going to the window. To the birds outside.

With short and anxious sigh, he looked over at Mobius and grinned. "Just avoid the birds. It'll be a piece of cake."

Famous last words.

If there was one thing Mobius was good at, it was reading people and if others hadn’t noticed Asriel’s serious side, that was a fault on them and no one else. It didn’t matter that they didn’t agree with what Asriel found important or thought he should’ve been concentrating on other things, or whatever the case may be. The fact of it still was, as far as Mobius was concerned, was that Asriel did take things seriously, he did care about things and he was willing to do what it took to accomplish those things. And that was something Mobius admired about him.

“Oh, would I?” Mobius huffed out a laugh, but sobered slightly as Asriel continued. An almost shy smile graced Mobius’ features as he could only stare at him as he went on. He didn’t know half as much about elephants as Asriel clearly did, but the way he spoke of them was just proving his point about how when Asriel thought something important, he learned about it and took it seriously. “I’m going to take that as I can sense danger from far away, I’m sensitive and beautiful and not that I’m a large land mammal.” He grinned and shook his head, leaning into kiss him after the apology. Others in the pub be damned, they didn’t exist. No one existed except for the two of them in that moment. “No apologies needed. Unless you want me to keep your tongue otherwise occupied.”

Yeah, it was definitely time to go.

Asriel wasn’t the only one concerned about the birds. It had felt like a narrow escape when they’d come in and now it felt like the birds could sense they were in there and were waiting for them to leave. “Whatever you do, protect your eyes.” Mobius suddenly found himself wishing he had a large stick to swat at them with.

“We’ll be fine, I’m sure.” He was not sure at all.

It was tempting to utter the words run away with me aloud for Mobius to hear before they left the bar. He almost did. The words were right there at the edge of his tongue, ready to fall. Asriel just had not realized how difficult it was to actually say them. What was it that he was afraid of? Mobius not having the reaction he hoped for?

Perhaps there was more damage to his heart than he realized. What a silly thing to admit to at his age. And yet, he said nothing as he followed Mobius outside. Fortunately, or unfortunately actually, there was a swarm of birds to distract them both. Even Stelmaria had trouble with the pesky creatures. She tried to swipe and take down as many as she could but there were just too many. Even between the three of them, all they could do was make a run for cover and do their best to shield their faces. And each other.

Still, they made it back to the apartments without being too terribly injured. Stelmaria had a few cuts and her fur was a mess of fallen feathers but otherwise, she sauntered inside with no problem. Asriel, while he could walk just fine, had one hand over his left eye where one particularly lucky bird had gotten a good long scratch in. Thankfully, the eye itself didn't seem to be injured. The surrounding skin, however, was a mess of flesh and blood. He could feel the gash had crossed his cheek and to his nose. It didn't feel that bad but he could feel half of his face wet and he could taste the blood as it streamed into his mouth. More than anything, Asriel was frustrated and embarrassed. He was glad that it didn't seem to be life-threatening but now he was worried about it leaving a scar.

"Don't suppose you're any good with a needle?" He had to ask as he turned and looked at Mobius with his one remaining good eye.

Though the thought that Asriel might ask him something like that had not crossed Mobius’ mind, it was pretty certain that his answer would be yes. It wasn’t as if he’d made any real lasting relationships here. There was Loki, of course, but his friend was busy with the life he’d built here before Mobius arrived. He had Thor and Jen and mostly Mobius just felt like a third wheel when he was around them. Like he was intruding or didn’t quite fit in. If he weren’t here anymore, what was the worst that could happen? They sigh and say ‘oh, that’s too bad. He was nice enough.’

That wasn’t the case with Asriel though. Mobius never felt like a third wheel. Even when Marisa was around, he’d felt her equal in Asriel’s eyes, not like he was intruding or didn’t quite fit. Asriel had made him feel nothing but included, treasured, cared for. And he couldn’t imagine not wanting to be around him, stay with him. So if he wanted to go, Mobius wanted to go with him.

The dash to the apartment was every bit as harrowing as Mobius thought it was going to be, even if he did come through it relatively unscathed. His hands were all scratched and bleeding from covering his face and head the entire time, but it was nothing a bit of a clean and maybe a band aid or two wouldn’t help. He huffed out a relieved laugh as they made it inside before he noticed Asriel’s injury.

The laugh died in his throat as he took in his blood soaked face. He could feel the colour drain from his cheeks right before he went into serious mode. “Shit. Okay, let’s sit you down. I need to take a look at that.” Mobius was no doctor by any means, but he had some first aid knowledge from back when he was a Hunter briefly, something he’d kept up for any possible field mission. “No, wait, let’s get you to the bathroom. We’re going to have to clean you up so I can see what I’m working with here.”

Okay, so maybe there was just a little bit of panic in his voice, but mostly, he thought he was managing to keep it together well enough.

It wasn't the first injury he had ever faced (lovely, he was still finding time to be humorous when he was bleeding out) and it certainly wasn't the worst pain he had ever felt but a bit of panic did begin to creep in his chest when he watched the color leave Mobius' face. "That bad?" Of course not. It couldn't be. After all, it was just a few scratches. Asriel Belacqua was not about to be undone by a few birds.

He winced as he tried to touch the wound but kept feeling around the sore flesh as if to make sure that it wasn't all that bad. There was a lot of blood, yes but even a flesh wound could cause a horrible mess. At least his eye seemed unharmed as he tried opening it and looking around. Which apartment had they made it to? But Mobius was ushering him into the bathroom quickly so he kept the one eye closed and the other on Mobius. Anything else wasn't important for the moment.

He had a vague feeling of deja vu as he went straight for the bathroom and headed for the sink. Again, hardly the first injury and nowhere close to the first time he'd been bleeding over a sink of some kind. Asriel had to laugh because it clearly wouldn't be the last time either.

"Would you think I was still attractive with only one eye?" Asriel wasn't being serious. It was a silly question and he felt he already knew the answer but he needed the distraction because now there was a mirror in front of him and he could see the damage. Alright, it wasn't just a little scratch. But Mobius had always been excellent at distracting him.

First injury or 50th, Mobius didn't much care. He didn't like seeing Asriel hurt ever. Really though, the part that was bothering him the most was all that blood. A little voice inside his head tried to remind him that head wounds always bled a lot, it didn't mean it was life threatening, but that was hard to listen to when he was staring it in the face. "No, no it's not too bad," Mobius tried, clearing his throat a bit as he spoke. He wanted to be reassuring, but honestly, he couldn't tell yet how bad it was.

As he led Asriel into the bathroom, his own as it turned out, he tried not to think of how bad it could be and concentrate on what he could and should do. Once he could clean away at least some of the blood, he'd be able to have a better idea of what he was working with, though he was already pretty sure he'd need a few stitches. He wondered if there were any of those butterfly stitches in his first aid kit.

"No, no sit," Mobius instructed as soon as Asriel went to mirror. He pointed at the toilet with the lid down. His tone meant business. "I don't need you passing out on me. I'm not as strong as I look." Mobius grabbed onto Asriel's arm to guide him and as if he might need to steady him, but really it was more a case of needing to steady himself.

"You know I would. And you're not going to lose your eye. No do as I said and sit. I need to see what I'm working with here."

Asriel was used to taking care of himself. Or at the very least, allowing only Thorold to touch him. If there was only one other person in the entire world, or universe or any timeline, that Asriel knew he could trust for anything, it was Thorold. Although, Mobius was coming dangerously close to stealing that position. Not that Asriel felt that Thorold would mine. In fact, he was sure his old servant would be delighted. In his own quiet way, anyhow. He'd taught Asriel many things, including how to fix up a stitch if he had to.

Thankfully, Mobius knew a thing or two himself.

For once, Asriel allowed someone else to have control over the situation. He mentally forced himself to take that step back. It was difficult to hand over the reigns for him. Asriel was a proud man and for a valid reason. He was quite capable of doing almost anything he needed, save for a few things that he had others do for him. It was rare though for him to need anything from anyone. Unless it was money for his expeditions but that was something else. No, this was something personal. Allowing another person to get this close to him when he was wounded showed a lot of trust on his part. A foolish trust, the nagging voice in the back of his mind tried to remind him. Asriel chose to ignore that voice for now and settled himself patiently under Mobius' hand.

It was hard to pry himself from the mirror but he did as Mobius asked and took a sat at the edge of the tub. He fussed for a moment or three but didn't argue. It was hard to when Mobius was making jokes about not being able to catch him if he fainted. Asriel smirked. "I don't know about that. You seem good at catching me every time I swoon." But it was probably wise that he did his best to stay conscious. Not that he felt in any danger of falling asleep.

Asriel definitely did not like being told what to do and even then, with Mobius just trying his best to care for him, his mind still wanted to refuse and be petulant. But he was obedient still and did not move as Mobius looked over the scratches. Still, it wasn't like to him to be serious for too long. He grinned as he looked up at Mobius. "What do you think, doctor? Will I survive for date number four?" Now that they were counting, that meant something more serious, didn't it? He let Mobius examine him just a little while longer before popping another question. "Move in with me?"

Asriel might be used to taking care of himself, but Mobius felt like if he wasn't directly involved with fixing up Asriel right now that he might lose his mind. Mobius was usually pretty level headed, especially in an emergency situation, but when it came to people he cared about he had a little bit less control. As it turned out, Asriel made that list. He grabbed a washcloth from beside the sink as soon as he ensured Asriel was sitting safely and ran it under warm water.

It wasn't lost on Mobius, how much the other man was trusting him right now. They may be sleeping together, might even be boyfriends, exclusive, the whole lot, but that didn't mean trust was easy to come by. Mobius knew that he trusted Asriel, but he wasn't naive. They may have only known each other for a few months, but he was pretty sure he had Asriel's number and that meant that this was a pretty big deal for him. Maybe, once he finished freaking out, he'd be able to fully appreciate that.

Mobius huffed out a slightly distracted laugh as he sat on the toilet lid and began to gently dab away the blood with the newly wetted cloth. "Oh please, pretty sure I'm the one who's been swooning, and in need of catching." Mobius remembered all too well how Asriel had come to his aid when those weird spectre things had come after him and Marisa. Something he would never forget.

There was a brief moment when Mobius thought Asriel might not listen to his instructions, but another sign of just how close they might be happened when he didn't get an argument at all. Soon, Mobius had managed to clean away most of the blood and was debating on how many butterfly stitches he might need. "You better survive. Next one is due to be a good one." He turned then, digging out his first aid kit to retrieve the stitches and some antibiotic ointment when Asriel spoke again. Mobius slowly turned back to look at him with a slightly confused look on his face, like he couldn't believe what he heard, but hoped he had heard right.

"I'm sorry?"

The side of his face was beginning to feel sore, raw almost. What an annoying thing; a shallow cut. Or perhaps not so shallow since Mobius was going back into the first-aid bag. But stitches didn't necessarily mean there would be a scar. It would depend on how fast the skin could heal and how deep the cut truly had been. If he was lucky, not quite deep enough. Although, he supposed a scar would only add to his physical appeal. Scars were unique. They told a story. It was also a physical reminder of the evening, one he'd re-live every time he looked in a mirror.

Again, if there was a scar. Mobius could just be acting overly cautious for his benefit. He liked to think it was mostly because Mobius actually liked him and not just because he was a man with a kind heart. A heart he definitely did not deserve to have for himself. And yet, here he was, asking anyway.

"Well I hope you won't be sorry. That is, if you say yes." There Asriel went, making light of the situation. He did enjoy being cheeky, even now as the soreness turned into an ache in his face. Though it was mostly from his own nerves, not because he didn't care how Mobius would answer.

"It would be easier to keep an eye on each other if we were to share the same... apartment. The things that happen here can range from harmless to nearly dying. Safety in numbers, of course." Those were far from the real reasons he was asking Mobius to move in with him. They were true, yes, but if that were the only qualification for him to allow anyone into his space, there were others he could ask. No, his reason was far more simple.

Asriel grinned and reached out to playfully tug on Mobius' shirt collar. "And maybe I really like the idea of having breakfast in bed with you."

As careful as he was trying to be, it was pretty clear to Mobius that Asriel’s face must hurt a lot. Not that the other man was really reacting much. The skin just looked so red and raw as he started to clean away the blood. Thankfully, the worst of it seemed to have stopped bleeding, though there were a few parts that were still oozing a bit. He didn’t know if it would scar, but it wouldn’t bother him either way. He couldn’t imagine anything making him think Asriel was less attractive at all.

Asriel wasn’t wrong, Mobius was being overly cautious, if only because he didn’t want to hurt Asriel even more. He hates seeing him hurt at all and is going to go out of his way to be extra gentle. Call him a sap, he didn’t care. He wanted to make Asriel feel better not worse.

That was until he got completely taken by surprise by Asriel’s question. Even as Asriel began to explain, Mobius couldn’t quite shake the feeling he was dreaming. Could he have possibly heard him right? He listens with one ear as Asriel goes on about safety in numbers or whatever such bullshit he was spewing currently and Mobius could only smile. A smile that only grew as he looked at Asriel’s poor injured face.

When Asriel tugged at his collar, all Mobius could do was lean in and kiss him. He tried to be gentle about his face, but was overcome with elation. “Well, I suppose I could. If you insist on making me breakfast in bed. How could I resist?”

If he had been holding his breath, it would have come out in a rush when Mobius eventually agreed. But he was cool as a cucumber. Save for that grin of his becoming a little wider. There had been a moment where he wondered if maybe he had over-reached. If he shouldn't have asked. Mobius could think that they were moving too fast and maybe they were. But this wasn't a normal situation. This wasn't either of their worlds, their timelines. Whatever would have been normal there didn't have to be normal here.

Either way, Asriel knew when he liked someone and he knew what he wanted. Both of those aligned with Mobius.

The kiss sealed the deal. Asriel gladly leaned into it. After, he was surprised that his face was still in one piece because if he smiled any bigger, Asriel was sure his cheeks would split. "You suppose, hm? Well, if it would make you more comfortable, I could... move in with you." Either way, they were waking up together and damn it all if that didn't have his heart soaring.

"I'm not the best in the kitchen but for you, maybe I can manage some pancakes. Maybe a few eggs if I get enough sleep from the night before," Asriel teased. But he couldn't hold the smile for too long because it was pushing against the open skin and Mobius still had to stitch that up. He winced as Mobius cleaned it up for him. "It's not just because-" Asriel cleared his throat awkwardly. "Well, the sex. I rather enjoy your ...well, you. All of you. You make me want to be better."

Maybe anyone else would think that Asriel was keeping it cool, but there was something about how that smile widened that made Mobius believe that maybe Asriel had had an inkling of doubt. As if Mobius could’ve ever turned down such an offer. Most of his surprise had been due to hearing the offer at all. He no longer doubted that Asriel cared for him, but he also knew how private he could be. That he was being let in so fully was something that Mobius would not take lightly.

An absolutely delighted laugh erupts out of Mobius then. “After all that work you’ve done painting your walls? Nah, I’m good with yours.” His grin now matched Asriel’s. It felt almost stupidly big in his head, part of him thinking that if anyone walked in on them, they would think they were crazy. But hey, Mobius would happily be considered crazy if it meant he got to be this happy.

“I’ll just have to make sure I wear you out then. Best way to ensure a good nights sleep.” Really, he didn’t need any of that, but he had to admit he was tickled at the thought that Asriel would try cooking for him. Mobius wasn’t really any better. It wasn’t like he cooked at all during his few centuries at the TVA. He couldn’t help the affectionate smile that lit up his face as he continued to clean up Asriel’s face. “I know,” he said softly as he gently cupped Asriel’s chin. “You don’t need to be better for me though. I already think you’re great.”

It was the consideration for his wall paintings that had Asriel blush, not the wear you out comment like most would think. The fact that Mobius thought about it at all did something to him that had his chest melting and aching all at once. And now he was remembering another promise he'd made to Mobius.

"I'm glad you like the paintings. Hopefully you'll like when I paint you," Asriel added as his face returned to a normal color.

It was too ...perfect. Too easy. There was still that sickening feeling that it would all fall out from underneath him and the dream would be over. Because Asriel knew he couldn't stay in San Francisco forever. Not if he had a choice. He had only hoped that maybe he could take a piece of the city with him when he did eventually leave. Particularly a Mobius-shaped piece.

Asriel closed his eyes, the good and the bad one, when he felt Mobius' hand soft touch. He leaned into it, savored the moment and those sweet words before slowly opening his eyes again. Mobius was too good. Too kind. In this city, in any city or any universe, Asriel knew he didn't deserve someone like this. But oh, how he wanted him anyway. He was a selfish man. At least he knew it. He turned his head just so he could leave a few kisses along Mobius' palm. "Does this mean there's room for me to be a little naughty then?"

The blush surprised Mobius, mostly because he knew it had nothing to do with his flirting. That was really more his own territory. Asriel had hardly been blushing when they’d first slept together so it wouldn’t make sense for it to be that now. So it must have been about the paintings. And that thought equally melted Mobius. Asriel really was more sensitive than he let most people know.

“Of course I like them. You’re a great artist.” Mobius huffed out a small laugh then, almost a snort. “You know, I kind of hoped you’d forgotten about that.” It was Mobius’ turn to blush. He would still do it, of course, but Asriel was going to need a lot of red paint to capture Mobius’ embarrassment.

It wasn’t like Mobius needed to stay here. His whole plan, if you could call it a plan, when he’d left the TVA was to discover himself, discover a new life where he made his own decisions. Sure he would miss Loki, but Loki had a whole life here that he didn’t need Mobius for. And what Mobius wanted was to be with Asriel. If it wasn’t in San Francisco, then they could be somewhere else. Location didn’t really matter.

Mobius smiled fondly at Asriel as he closed his eyes and tilted his head into his hand. They were having similar thoughts, though Mobius was under no illusion that Asriel was too good. He was good and bad in equal measure, in Mobius’ opinion and he absolutely loved that about him. “I hope you’re a lot naughty, actually. Have anything particular in mind?”

He loathed it when he couldn't properly control his emotions. Especially the ones that came so easily to his face. Asriel disliked having others know exactly what was going on behind those dark eyes. It gave them the chance to use those emotions against him. But this moment wasn't like that. In fact, one could say that Asriel was proving that he could, indeed, be human. He could, in fact, feel. As much as his reputation liked to say otherwise, Asriel Belacqua was capable of more feelings than most would realize. It was only his experience that had taught him to hide them. But he didn't need to hide them any more. At least, not with Mobius.

Asriel grinned like a proud school boy. "You think any idea of getting you naked in front of me would ever leave my mind?" He enjoyed getting that bright color from Mobius. Now that they were alone, maybe he could make that color deeper. But then the wound on his eye made him wince and he remembered why they had to cut their date early.

All the better, of course. They weren't that far from the bedroom-

Asriel reached for Mobius' hand, the one still holding his face and he held it right back. The smile turned mischievous. "I have plenty of things in mind we could try. It depends on if my charming nurse would clear me for physical activity. What do you say? Am I cleared for duty?"

That was a shame, really. Mobius couldn’t help but notice just how bright Asriel’s eyes got whenever something like this happened, whenever he felt like he was seeing the real Asriel. Not that the didn’t think he knew him, but there was always something different in these moments. It made Mobius feel like they were even closer. But he understood why Asriel might not want to show most people that sort of thing. It could make you feel so vulnerable. Mobius supposed all he could do was hope that Asriel knew that he would never use anything like that against him. In all the worlds in the whole multiverse, Mobius couldn’t ever imagine a time or place where he would want to hurt Asriel.

Look, it really wasn’t going to take much to make Mobius blush, okay? As much as he trusted Asriel, and knew the other man was attracted to him, he just still felt a little awkward in his own skin. It was something Mobius really wasn’t used to. He’d always been confident, knew what he was doing, how to accomplish what he set out to do, but for so long, none of that had related to sex in anyway. “No, I suppose not. I guess if you still want to, I’m not going to say no.”

Mobius smirked as he applied a couple of butterfly stitches to Asriel’s face before placing a quick kiss to Asriel’s lips. “I think you’ll be fine, yeah. Maybe we should take it easy though?” So he was still a little concerned, though it seemed pretty clear that Asriel was making a quick recovery.

It was becoming apparent just how much Mobius seemed to enjoy seeing these different sides to him. Asriel couldn't help noticing how much the other man's face lit up at certain moments. Sometimes it wasn't for the thing he expected but most of the time, he could make a good guess. And no, it wasn't hard to get Mobius' cheeks to turn bright red. Asriel also couldn't help himself with that either. Mostly because the color was usually accompanied by a shy but still confident smile. "I promise not to hang it in the drawing room," Asriel made sure to add in order to help that blush away.

The stitches were done quickly enough. Even Asriel was impressed. Seems there was more to Mobius than meets the eye. And Asriel was ever the explorer.

But tonight, perhaps Mobius was right. He was still tipsy from the beers and after that mess with those damned birds, maybe taking it easy was solid advice. Begrudgingly, Asriel nodded with a sigh that was so obviously full of disappointment. "You make a fine doctor. A kiss before delivering bad news? Suppose anything too ... rambunctious would be out of the question." Shame too. But Asriel was not a man beholden to his urges. And surprisingly, taking it easy was starting to sound... well. Nice. He helped Mobius set everything away and stood from his spot, although carefully (alright maybe there was a bit of a head rush). "A night on the couch then? Perhaps you could find something entertaining enough on that television box."

It was true. Mobius very much did like learning all these new aspects of Asriel. It felt like every day he learned something new and he was always thirsty for more. He was endlessly fascinated by everything he learned, and even more so by the simple fact that Asriel liked him. He’d chosen him, and opened up his home to him. He’s made him feel welcome when Mobius had felt so lost and he’ll never forget that. “I would very much appreciate that. I would say hang it in the bedroom, but I admit, if I’m moving in, I don’t know how much I want to see it.”

Once the stitches were done, Mobius stood and began to clean up. He smiled and allowed Asriel to help, even as he kept a strict eye on him, ready to steady him if need be. “Unfortunately, I think you’re right. As soon as we’re sure you’re better, I’ll be sure to make it up to you.” Really, all he cared about was being with Asriel. The sex was great, for sure, but it was only part of their relationship.

“A night on the couch sounds lovely. I could try making you a tea if you want? And of course, something to watch.” There had to at least be some terrible network drama on, or terrible reality show That was always the kind of mindless tv Mobius wanted when he felt like relaxing. “Come on, let’s get you settled.”
