Molly was seated on the couch in the common. Well, lounging might have been a better way of putting it, as her body was stretched over the length of the couch, her legs dangling off the edge of the arm at the moment. Sure, it was her birthday, but she hadn't really mentioned it to anyone. Halloween was the next day so she'd have a party of sorts for herself and that was more than enough recognition. The care package would have made it obvious, but she didn't really worry about it. If someone wanted to wish her a happy birthday they could, and if not, that was fine too.
Her eyes flickered around the room before she closed them for a moment, relaxing. Dinner would be soon, but for now some rest would be a nice thing to have.
Gabe might not have been comfortable with some grand plan to take Molly's virginity for her birthday, but that didn't mean he was a cad either. Molly was still his friend, and he threw a parcel into her lap when he saw her laying back on the couch with her eyes closed. Was it a little juvenile of him? Perhaps, but he was mostly impressed he was able to toss it so perfectly and make it land so gently when he wasn't a Chaser. His grin made obvious his self-pride at pulling off the move, really.
Molly had not expected something to land on her and she sat up quickly at the fact, looking around in confusion. Her eyes settled on Gabe and she glanced down, realizing now that it was a package for her birthday. She was still half-annoyed with herself for messing up their rapport, so a tiny almost-nervous smile was offered as she started to unwrap the gift.
Gabe hoped he'd gotten the right thing. She liked Star Wars, and light sabers were supposed to be the cool thing from that series. He got her the blue one since her hair had been blue for a while. It had been challenging to get from Hogwarts, but he had started before the curfews and lock downs.
Molly finished unwrapping the box and her eyes widened when she realized what she was looking at. She was able to prevent herself from jumping up and hugging him, but she did let out an excited squeal. “It's awesome, Gabe! Thank you!”
Gabe's grin was wide and genuine at her squeal. That was a good sign, clearly. "Happy Birthday, Carpenter." Gabe said laughing a little. "So you like it?"
“I do, very much.” She noted the use of her last name and looked at him, raising an eyebrow. “Don't think I'm going to go easy on you during practice for this though, Turner. Our first game is coming up soon.” Which was true. His birthday was too and she had his gifts up in her room - though part of her was uncertain on part of his gift.
"I'll be shit the rest of this weekend," Gabe admitted. Death was restless. It would be at least another couple days before he actually slept well. It was a caged bird last night that kept repeating. And Gareth's murder, though he saw no more detail than he had before.
“No practice til Monday anyway. The party tomorrow and recovering Sunday.” Not as much for her but for others on the team it would be a thing. She looked at him, noting that the constant circles under his eyes were a bit deeper. She understood that it was normal but it still sucked.
"Hopefully I'll get a night's peace by then." His goal for the next couple nights was to wear himself out as much as possible to try to sleep through the dreams or to make it so that he was exhausted enough for fall back to sleep easily enough. The full moon so close to Halloween was a problem for him. But this was about Molly. "And until then, we have your birthday, the dance, and hopefully a lot of fun."
“I got a great gift.” A soft mutter and she shook her head. “Harry’s leaving. Guess it sort of settles what I'm going to do next year, Quidditch instead of possibly being a TA if a team takes me.” It sucked because honestly she had been enjoying the fact that he was there to teach and work with her. She guessed it gave her the freedom to not be grading and such, but she had enjoyed the extra time with him. They needed him in Chicago though, supposedly the BMA said someone was needed to watch the area, the exact task he'd been thrown here as punishment for.
"That isn't such a great gift. He's your mentor, right?" On the other hand, the man didn't seem to like Gabe all that much or trust him, and Gabe wouldn't miss that. He understood being treated with suspicion. He had been Marked from birth. "At least Battye is going to make sure we get good exposure to the Scouts next month… so they'll be able to see you play."
“Yeah, he is.” Molly shrugged slightly and absently flicked the light in her lightsaber on and off a few times. “It doesn't really matter. It means I'm free more for Quidditch because I'm not getting extra tutoring and doing homework grading.” A nod at the comment about scouts, a faint smile at the thought. “I'm pretty sure I'll impress them, so there's that. I'm rare enough, female beater and all.”
"Or else he'll start harassing you with owls instead." Gabe didn't think the other man was really that sort, but he was obviously protective of Molly. "You'll impress them because you play well not because you have a vagina… I don't think they're going to see that." Gabe pointed out somewhat crudely.
“Probably true. Still, no grading for all that.” Molly shrugged. It would probably be her parents owling more now with Harry not there to check up on her. She was 18 and didn't think she really needed it, but it wasn't likely to change that it would happen. “It's a combo really, but there are some teams like Holyhead where being female is a necessity.”
"Yea but talent will be the key. And just getting on their radar." Gabe pointed out. His future was determined for him, had been. He had a little more freedom because of his Gift, but there was already a desk waiting for him in the offices of the ranch.
“Yeah, true enough.” Molly wrinkled her nose slightly at the thought of serious discussions of her future. Quidditch was one of the things she was good at, and if it wasn't that she'd be back in Chicago training under Harry (and probably Leanansidhe, but that was less something she wanted to think about, that tie only because of her veela blood.) “Let’s talk about something more fun. This isn't.”
"Like what you are going to wear for Halloween tomorrow?" Gabe asked, running his hand through his hair. He still wasn't totally decided, if he was honest. It wasn't like it mattered though. His goal was to get drunk or stoned and find a bed to spend the night in.
“Marilyn Monroe look. The iconic white dress and platinum hair.” A smile was offered at the thought. It was going to be fun and being at school and dancing? It always amused her. The attention she drew from it was much less threatening when it came to boys she had known for years. “You still going with Sam Adams?”
Gabe didn't need to know muggle popular culture to know Marilyn Monroe. "Sexy." Molly didn't often embrace that side of herself, at least not in big events. "I dunno. It hasn't passed the sexy-test apparently." Gabe shrugged. "Maybe I'll just wear black and say I'm a Grim."
“It's a good idea. Sera pretty much offered to yank your hair out of the tail eventually. Means something I suppose.” Her voice was level when she said that and she absently toyed with the lightsaber again, a thoughtful look on her face. “Going as a huge black dog though. That's hot.” Her tone rapidly altered to teasing rather than ‘natural’ and she smirked at him. “Could just toss on your gear and nick a snitch, be a Quidditch star.”
Gabe took the jibe about Sera in stride. "Yea but she's going in matching costumes with her betrothed too. So she might not be free to be pulling at my hair," Gabe shrugged. He'd find someone… or drink himself to a stupor. Both were suitable options. "Quidditch star isn't really a costume." He was after all just that.
“I highly doubt it'll stop her from leaving when and with whom she wants.” Because from what she'd seen, both parties in the betrothal seemed a bit bewildered on how to handle it. The discussion on matching costumes wouldn't have been the same if they were actually into the idea. It seemed more like something they just had to do. “And it is. You're not that every day, we’re still in school. Like I said though, you'll probably be fine with what you came up with.”
Gabe shrugged, not really worried about Sera's engagement, if he was to be honest. And he wasn't really worried about finding someone or not. Things would work out or they wouldn't. "No but even out of uniform, it's still who I am," Gabe replied smugly. Okay it was probably a stretch in truth, but it certainly sounded good. "I'll figure it out for sure by the time I get to the dance."
“I should hope so. I doubt any of our professors would allow you in with nothing on.” A small smirk and she brushed back her hair from her face, looking up at him. “Oh, also since it’s next week I figure you should know that we’re not doing practice on your birthday either. I think you'll appreciate it.”
"Oh? Not forcing me to run drills is your birthday gift to me?" Gabe asked, arching a brow. "It's the morning after that will be more a thing than the day of." Although it always depended on his sleep, or lack thereof.
“In part. But there's more that you'll see then.” Because if she was giving him gifts to occupy him for that night and hopefully a few days after, giving him the night to spend with his liquor and whatever else she managed to procure before that point would be nice of her.
"Tease," Gabe accused good-naturedly. He honestly didn't expect anything, or care if he got anything. He'd get stuff from his father and sisters of course, but he was going to be in class all day anyway - with Transfigurations and CoMC in the morning and afternoon.
“On occasion. It amuses you.” She was relatively certain of that at least. Her eyes moved to meet his and a flicker of wickedness glinted in them. “I'm not always a tease though.” Because they'd messed around and gotten each other off, and she was pretty sure he liked her body.
No, she wasn't, but he didn't mind teasing, really. "You're confident." He teased back. She certainly wasn't a tease all the time, and that was a part of the awkwardness. "I'm not going to argue with the birthday girl."
Molly shifted on the couch, adjusting so she wasn't lounging over the arm of it anymore. “Confident enough.” Because she had no reason to not be - she had athletic talent and she wasn't the greatest witch, no, but she was adept enough to get by.
Gabe laughed. "Yes, that." He agreed. She was hot and talented after all. She had reason to be confident. And more than enough reason not to need him.
