Who: Derek and Stiles
Where: St. Mungo's
When: August 8th, evening, after Stiles' journal post
Warning: Derek's personality
Status: Closed, in progress
Derek was, to put it very shortly, not a fan of hospitals. Between Peter and Laura he'd been in them enough that the memories made his skin crawl. But he was here for a reason...even if he wasn't sure what that reason was. He doubted the dog was with Stiles in the hospital and Batman was the only reason he was here. And yet, here he was.
He stopped by the gift shop and bought some flowers because he was...pretty sure that that's what you did for people in the hospital, and it felt wrong to show up empty handed. Or, not wrong, but weird at least. This gave him an excuse.
The nurse directed him to Stiles' room and told him visiting hours were almost over and he had to make it quick, and Derek nodded and headed up.
He paused outside of the door because...seriously, what was he doing here? He should just leave. But he felt bad for the kid because as much as Stilinski annoyed him they still spent enough time together between classes and detentions that they were familiar. And he was a teacher and Stiles was his student and it wasn't weird. It wasn't. Honestly.
He knocked on the door as a warning and waited for the all clear before opening it. "Stilinski."
Stiles really hadn’t been expecting anyoe to visit him that night because Sera’s pool party was going on. That and visiting hours were coming to a close real quickly. His dad had left to get Batman ready for Derek and then head off to work. They were a single income house hold and even though his son was in the hospital John Stilinski still needed to work. Especially now that they would have hospital bills.
So when there was a knock a door on the door Stiles was surprised because the nurses never knocked. He was even more surprised when Derek Hale of all people walked in. “Derek?” Stiles asked wondering if the last nurse gave him too much pain killers and he was hallucinating all of this. Especially when he saw the flowers in Derek’s hands. The teen’s eyebrows show up and he gave Derek a surprised look. “Did you bring me flowers? Am I dying? Is this how the nurses are going to tell me?”
"Professor Hale," he said, too used to Stiles ignoring his actual title to put much fire behind it. He rolled his eyes and set the flowers down on the bed. "Should have brought a vase," he murmured to himself. Perhaps the nurses would be able to get him a cup or something. For now, Derek pulled out his wand and waved it over the flowers, mumbling the spell his mother had used to make her flowers last longer.
"You're not dying," he said with a long-suffering sigh. "I figured that I should at least come make sure you were mostly in one piece before I stole your dog."
“Look after my dog,” Stiles corrected Derek as he watched the older male place a spell on his flowers so they would last longer. He would need to get a vase of some sort before long but right now Stiles was more concerned about a teacher being in his hospital room than the flowers. “You are looking after my dog until I’m well enough to keep up with Batman again.”
The teen shrugged his good shoulder and lifted his bad arm a little to show off the damage was healing thanks to magic. “I’ve been better but I’ve also been worse off. Panic attacks are a lot scarier than being blown up, Professor Hale."
"Look after, steal, whatever." Derek shrugged. "If you manage to not blow yourself up for the rest of the summer I'll be impressed."
He glanced over at Stiles as he raised his arm, assessing the damage - bruises, tentative movements, a cast, all easily fixable - but nodded. "I'm aware, yes. But blowing yourself up is still not fun."
"You have little faith in me. I wouldn't have blown myself up if it had been my ingredients and labels," Stiles pointed out because he was pretty good with the whole not blowing himself up when he did potions. He hadn't done it before now but then he wasn't making new recipes. He just followed ones already been created and tested.
"But agree. I don't think I will want to experience that again," Stiles said as he relaxed back against the bed. An awkward silence filled the air that Stiles had the urge to fill. "Have I said thank you for the flowers yet? Or willing to look after Batman? He has a lot of energy. Don't let the other animals eat him okay?"
Derek just rolled his eyes. "Of course not. I'm sure."
He snorted and shook his head. "You didn't but don't worry. And I'll keep him safe. I'm pretty good at making sure the dangerous animals stay away from the relatively non-dangerous ones. And he'll stay inside the cottage with me. It's been too hot outside to leave him out there anyway."
“I would suggest taking his leash or he will be taking off into the forest before you can stop him,” Stiles suggested from where he was in his bed. His none damaged hand idly picked at his blanket as they talked. It was a little weird but there was a hint of comfortable to it. At least from Stiles side but then it could have been the pain killers.
“And thank you for the flowers and taking Batman.” Stiles even smiled a little at the assistant teacher. “Dad has a lot on his plate and I know you will take really good care of him. You take good care of all the animals that the school has.”
"I'm sure I can keep a handle on him, but I was planning on it." He seemed quieter than Derek was used to, which was pleasant but also kind of disconcerting. Stiles was meant to be loud and annoying and anything else was unnatural.
"You're welcome." Derek wasn't sure what this sudden feeling in him was, seeing Stilinski more smiling and less...Stinlinski-y. "It's kind of my job to take care of them, yeah," he snarked, to cover up whatever that was. "But I'll keep him alive, don't worry. Just focus on getting better."
“It’s all I have to do here,” Stiles pointed out as Derek told him to focus on getting better. He rolled his eyes and gave the older male a look. “Batman gets top priority. Unless you have sick animals. Then they get top priority. But after sick animals it is Batman and then the rest of them. Are you sure you can handle him? You saw how active he was and don’t give him ice cream every day. There is plenty of food at my house that you can take with you including his treats.” Stiles might have been babbling but he was pretty sure they were having a civil conversation which just never happened with them. They bickered and riled each other up. It was what they were supposed to do.
"Am I going to have to write all of this down for you?"
