journal entry
You know those lyrics ‘You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone’? I think I’m starting to really get it. Yes, I’m homesick. It’s only been about a month and I’m already homesick. There are obvious things I miss like people, but also minor little comforts that this time just doesn’t seem to have. Giant gas station smoothies, ice cream... There’s a theme of edibility for a lot of the little things I miss. Not that the food here is bad or anything like that. It’s just not caramel swirl from the local frozen custard place. It’s not home. This time of year back where and when I belong I’d be moved into my dorm and I’d probably be homesick there, too. I guess it’s inescapable.

What do you all miss?

♥Amy P.

Charley. Ginger. Jane. My show proper.

Midori. I would give fucking anything for a bottle of Midori right now.

...Is that too predictable?

It was kind of predictable. You really love that stuff, don't you?

Do you think anyone else from home will show up?

Hey, don't go talking shit, Midori is fucking nectar from the gods!

Maybe. Preferably I'd like to find a way back to them.

Know what else I miss? Hot showers. With real water pressure. Fuck I miss the 21st century.

It's a little too sweet, if you ask me.

Yeah, I'd prefer that, too. I wonder if they miss us like we miss them.

Yes! Real showers and real baths with real privacy. We're spoiled, Peter.

Blasphemy!

Actually, I was thinking about that some. They're pulling us from all sorts of times, right? I don't remember you being gone at all. But, I was here for about a month before you showed up. Do you remember me going missing?

Spoiled?! ....okay yeah, maybe a little.

And I miss that moment right at sundown when the casinos and hotels on the Strip start to turn their lights on. Used to watch the whole city light up little by little while everything else went dark.

You know, I don't remember you going missing at all. And since Jerry everything that happened, Charley and I have seen a lot of you. An absence wouldn't have gone unnoticed.

Compared to people who are used to this? We are so spoiled.

It sounds beautiful.

Exactly. Which leads me to believe that unless we were taken at exactly the same time, that the people back home probably don't even realize we're gone. Maybe we get sent back to the exact moment we left. Or maybe we're in both places at once, just sort of splintered. Maybe we're switching back and forth while we sleep, who fucking knows. I miss my books right now.

Hey, it's hardly our fucking fault we were born in a time with proper electricity and computers and air conditioning and good plumbing.

It's Vegas, of course it's beautiful. One big beautiful mess of lights and colours and noise. And all the fucking monsters in the shadows waiting to tear your throat out.

That's a weird one to think about. Being split between two times. Got anything in your books about this kind of thing?

No, you're right. Back home expecting stuff like that isn't even considered high maintenance.

I never got out to the strip a whole lot before… You know. But it's a fun place and the food is amazing. I'm thinking a lot with my stomach, apparently.

My books would have something at least. I'd just feel a lot fucking better with them on hand.

Nothing wrong with that. Tell you what, when we get back I'll take you and Charley to all the best spots. Call it making up for being stuck in the fucking Dust Bowl.

You're pretty much prepared for anything that goes bump in the night, aren't you? Back home, I mean.

Sounds good to me. If When we get back I have a small list of things I'm going to do.

I try to be, at least. Feels better than just leaving myself completely open.

Only a small list?

Purposely small. I don't want to half ass my way through a really long list. I want to take my time and enjoy everything on that list.

My computers. Technology. Google. Internet in general, I guess. Espressos. Starbucks. Heating and AC. My bed.

But I guess, considering the state the rest of the country is in right now, we really can't complain.

Yes! Espresso! And coffee with hazelnut syrup for my sweet tooth! I completely feel you on these things.

I miss Chuck. Digby, my dog. My shop. Having a proper supply of ingredients at my fingertips. Knowing what was going on, at least some of the time.

Is Chuck a friend? And what kind of shop do you own? I miss knowing what's going on, too. This place is a little too mysterious for my taste.

Girl. Friend. She's my girlfriend. Her name's actually Charlotte, I've just always called her Chuck. I own a pie shop. What about you? What were you studying? At least, I assume you were studying given the mention of a dorm.

Yes. It's impossible to know where to start in working it out. If it even can be worked out. Definitely too much mystery.

Oh, I'm sorry she's not here with you. A pie shop, huh? That sounds like it could be a fun job. I was supposed to be starting college at Ohio State. Undeclared, but leaning towards sports medicine.
