It had been a reasonable stretch of time and Amy still didn’t know why Management had brought her in as part of the song and dance act. Until she’d joined the carnival she hadn’t even performed once. True, she didn’t do a terrible job at the song and dance act, but even when she did well she felt like a fish out of water. All this was true and yet Amy took her job seriously, especially now that she had a partner who so completely outshone her in the talent department.
Taking it seriously brought her to the big top some nights after closing. It was dark and sometimes she would stumble a little, but it was the time of day she could be sure no one would see her running routines and so she couldn’t embarrass herself.
Tonight was one of those nights. Amy had a little extra energy left in her and she knew that turning in would only bring tossing, turning, and straying thoughts. She wasn’t sure she was up for a few hours of laying in bed, thinking about home and the people she’d left behind. Instead she set to singing a song she’d heard on Carl’s radio in a low voice and doing the dance she and Rachel had choreographed to go along with it. She only wanted to work out the kinks and perform it better the next day.
She was doing well in her practicing, but just as she became sure of herself and what she was doing her shoe caught an uneven patch on the ground and she awkwardly took a tumble. Her singing was replaced with an awkward grunt of pain and then silence.
“And the audience goes wild.” She rolled her eyes, just sitting on the ground in the middle of the big top.
