In one of the most harrowing breaches of security known to wizardking, a group of masked villains entered St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries some time between two and three o'clock early Friday morning. The hospital, a beacon of healing for many in London, became home to Dark magic for the first time since the late 18th century. Witnesses claim at least a dozen hooded figures ransacked the hospital, injured those whose got in their way, and attempted to kill those who resisted. The building itself has suffered several interior damage and will likely remain closed for the remainder of the week, with patients new and old being treated at the Ministry of Magic while renovations and investigations continue. Reports list at least nine fatalities and over forty others were treated for serious injuries at the Ministry of Magic. Some reports claim that a child was taken from the hospital, though no information regarding this claim has been released to the public.
Many claim to have seen the masked figures come from a stairwell leading to the basement, but others claim the attackers entered St. Mungo'as through a back entrance on the ground floor. It is common knowledge that Apparition is restricted within the walls of the hospital. To have entered the hospital through the basement means that the attackers either had advanced knowledge of the ins and outs of the wards placed on the hospital or that they were given clearance to enter. Given the recent events with the break-in at Gringott's Wizarding Bank and the murder of former Head Auror Dion Fields, many are not ruling the possibility out of an inside job. "It's the only explanation I can come up with," says Bart Brodie, a Hit Wizard called to the scene early Friday. "Too many people saw them on that stairwell for them to have not been there." When asked about the witnesses who claimed to have seen the group by another entrance, Brodie had this to say: "Either they assumed wrong that they entered by that door because they were near it, or the group entered from various locations. Neither can be concretely claimed as of yet."
Aurors were called to the scene to arrest the offenders and assist the resistors. Several patients and civilians quickly jumped into the fray to fight the masked figures, and some paid a very dear price. Of the nine deaths, eight were civilians. Rufus Scrimegeour was overheard making it clear to his department that the priority was on these civilians, and while a valiant effort was made, several people lost their lives and only one out of at least a dozen attackers was captured. His name has not been released to the public, but the Prophet has learned that he is being held at the Ministry of Magic while he awaits a trial. At least one of the attackers was killed. For a list of casualities, see page 5A.
