I actually really enjoyed this episode. I'm currently working on a podcast called 'The Magick of Buffy' all about the supernatural aspects of the buffyverse (forum located at http://buffymagick.proboards66.com/index.cgi ) and this episode will provide tons of info for me.
Being a Witch in real life, I was glad they had this episode and introduced the character of Jenny, to counteract the bad picture they painted of the occult in episode 1x03.
I also liked that they showed how resistant Giles is to, basically, change. It's a good example of showing how he develops his outlook of Americans (including Buffy) as things occur later in the series.
And by the way, Joss has confirmed that Buffy's birthday is around Jan 17th-20th. They've stated more or less that the 12th ep of each season is her birthday episode. Plus, in the episode in season 4, "Doomed", when Riley asks "What are you?", Buffy states "Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius".
