Chatting It Up, Introducing Jacob and Christina
Who: Detective Jacob Mitchell and Christina Lowell
Where: Duncan's Bar
When: Tuesday Evening
The place wasn't really known that well except for those who lived near by or knew friends in the area. Of course, many of the local cops in the area who worked at the precinct in the area frequently stopped by after their shifts. Lt. Jacob Mitchell was just like any of his fellow officers. He stopped by Duncan's after his shift this evening to grab a burger, beer, and maybe catch a sports game on one of the few TVs the bar displayed. He sat at said bar, taking a quiet swig of his beer.
Admittedly, the fact that the small bar was known as a cop hangout was the primary reason Christina Lowell was here. She didn't care about the fun factor... she just wanted a safe place to enjoy a few light beers. She walked in with her purse slung over her shoulder, a smile on the young blonde's face as she sashayed toward the bar, a calf-length blue dress accentuating her curves and a snug, long sleeved red blouse telling the rest of her body's story.
Unlike the rest of the bar's patrons, Jacob didn't notice the attractive young woman until she came up to the bar. Glancing casually to the side at the woman's approach, the Lt. did a double-take as he slowly set down his beer bottle.
Looking to the bartender with a sweet smile, Christina handed him a five dollar bill. "Bud light please? With a nice glass of ice with it? Keep the change." The blonde wasn't a prude, or a no-fun type... she just was so preoccupied that she didn't even notice the officer checking her out.
He finished chewing a bite of hamburger, wiped his mouth with a napkin, washed down his food with a swig of beer and commented, "Haven't seen you here before."
Christina turned her head then, and gave the officer a sweet smile. "Oh! I've only been here once or twice. Heard it was a safe place, so... yeah. I'm new here, didn't feel like walking into some place that makes the bar in Road House look cozy by comparison."
"Well, that's fairly obvious." He glanced at her up and down as he continued, "This place is pretty much a local's hang out, and ... you're just a tad bit younger than any of the regulars here." The detective gestured his head to the rest of the room, mostly filled with older guys and a few middle aged women. The only younger women in the place were the half dozen waitresses on staff.
"Well, again, I'm not really the type to barhop for fun and excitement. I just like to have a drink or two to unwind, then go and do something more mundane like read a book." The blonde was unapologetic about her boring nature.
Jacob chuckled, adjusting his glasses a bit before quipping back, "Reading is hardly mundane." He took a swig of beer and popped a french fry into his mouth.
"Well. A man who doesn't find my most beloved hobby lame? I think I might have found my first friend here." She extended a slightly pale hand to him, smiling. "Christina Lowell."
Jacob chuckled as he shook her hand, "Jacob Mitchell. Fellow mundane reader."
"Now what kind of reading are we talking here?" Christina laughed and poured part of the bottle into the glass. "Are we talking moderately nerdy, like someone who reads sci-fi but some classics as well? Semi-cool, like a guy who reads mostly Stephen King and John Grisham? Or zero-chance-of-cool like me, who's read all of Jane Austen's books at least three times apiece?"
"Hmm, let me think a minute ..." Jacob paused briefly, "What about a little of each category? Does that make me a semi-cool nerd?" The detective pushed aside his nearly empty plate and finished off the last of his beer.
"Hm. That might be a new category, but I'm sure something can be done." She giggled a little, happy to have found someone interesting to converse with. She knew next to nobody here so far... and talking primarily to her Slayer wasn't always the type of companionship she was looking for.
Before saying anything, Jacob hailed the bartender and ordered another bottle of Killian's Irish Red. Turning back to Christina, the detective inquired, "So, based on your tone, I'm willing to make the assumption that reading is ... a large part of your job?"
"It can be... but more than anything I use it to relax after finishing at work." She couldn't help but be a little amused by his attempts at finding more out about her.
The bartender brought Jacob his order, the detective handing over a fiver. "Yeah ... guess you could say the same for me. After a day or two on the job, mundane sounds pretty good." Jacob took a swig.
