Struggling with the Case
Who: Alex Hunt and Jacob Mitchell
Where: LA County Police Station
When: Tues. Dec. 23
The sound of computer keys clacking mixed with the other daily sounds of the precinct. Jacob Mitchell, one of L.A.'s numerous homicide detective's was finishing up various reports while waiting for one detective Alexander Hunt. Apparently Hunt's case was weird enough to warrant Jake's opinion.
Hunt didn't really know what to do with this case. Something about it bugged him deep down to his bones. Maybe it was the marks on the woman's neck. (Necks don't spontaneously combust!) Maybe it was the way her husband and his friends reacted to when he mentioned the Slayer thing. (No such band in LA, and he had spent way too much time lately in clubs, so he knew that for sure.) He had been told that Jacob Mitchell might be able to help him out, and he was willing to try anything at this point. He was carrying the case file over with him when he walked to Jacob's desk. "So, Mitchell, have you heard anything about this case yet?" he asked, sitting down in front of the desk.
As Jacob sat back in his chair, he adjusted his glasses and exhaled a small sigh, "Not much, just that the circumstances were unusual." The detective glanced to the file folder in Hunt's hand, "What can I do for you, detective Hunt?"
Alex handed Jacob the folder that he was carrying. Inside of it were his notes on the case, along with pictures from both the scene of the crime and from the morgue. "Something about this case doesn't add up. Almost all of the blood was drained from her body, and then she was dropped off on someone else's doorstep. Her husband was evasive, but his alibi checks out clean." He wasn't sure if the murder was ritualistic or what.
Jacob took the file, flipping it open and took a quick study of the photographs until he came upon the ones of the woman's neck. Based upon what was just said, Jacob kept his face well schooled to not reveal anything. Somehow he had the feeling that detective Hunt wouldn't understand that vampires were real and that the "Slayers" were the ones that killed them. "Well, I've worked a case where a mortition drained his victims alive, I could talk to some people there and see if there's been unusual activity."
If Alex could read anything from his face, he didn't show it. "It could be something like that. I just don't want this poor girl to turn into another cold case. Whatever happened to her, she didn't deserve it." Few people who die do, but this seemed to be extra drawn out to him.
A casual shrug was given, "It wouldn't hurt if I questioned some of the people involved, maybe give the case a new pair of eyes and a different angle? Do you have a list?"
"No, not at all. Might help, actually." He pulled out a notepad and started writing names down. "Here's a list. It's got the woman's husband, the two people he came in with, and a few others. She didn't have many friends in town other than people she worked with, though. Her cousin is also coming into town to make some funeral arrangements. Apparently they were really close as well, so maybe she might know something about the woman, or at least be willing to say something. Most of the others have been real tight lipped." He handed him the list.
Jacob thought to himself, "That would be because you have no idea of the world you get saved from on a daily basis." Taking the list, he glanced at it before folding it in half and tucking it away in the front pocket of his button down. "I'll start making some visits then."
"Thanks, I really appreciate it." Alex hated having to reach out for help, but he was getting stonewalled in this case and he knew it. Maybe someone a little younger could convince people to talk where as he couldn't.
The Werecougar shrugged, "Won't be a problem." The corner of his lips curved upward in a smile, "I like a challenge."
"Well, this one is a tough one, so good luck with it." Alex said, standing up.
Jacob stood as well, offering his hand, "Thanks. I'll contact you with whatever information I get."
Alex shook his hand. "I'd appreciate the contact. Just let me know if anyone actually talks." He had become more than a little frustrated with the brick wall he was getting from people.
He firmly shook the other man's hand, nodding, "Will do."
