An Open Invitation
Who: Kat and Jason (But ATTN: All Regan High Students)
Where: Regan High
When: Friday morning (before school)
Jason wasn't feeling great about this. He was still angry about the locker incident – more because of Cassie than because of what Camille had done to his locker – but more than anything, he wanted to ignore her antics until she finally stopped. To retaliate, to react, it was only going to give her the attention she craved.
He'd spent time with Cassie after practice and it had done a lot to reduce his stress over the matter. When he was with her, he didn't have to think about all the petty shit. She was nothing like Camille – or any of the other girls he'd dated. It left him feeling almost off his game, but not in a bad way. More like he couldn't – or didn't want to – feed her the same old lines.
The sound of footsteps coming down the hall caught his attention and he looked up to see Henry Petit approaching with the keys to the computer lab where the school newspaper was put together. Jason had gone to school with Henry for as long as he could remember. Both of their parents came from money. They'd been pretty tight for a while, back in elementary school, before the boundary lines had been drawn. Henry wasn't a geek, but he wasn't a jock either. He fell into the large category of average. He was also the chief editor of the newspaper.
"Jason." There was a hint of uncertain surprise in Henry's voice when he saw the football player. He had to wince at the split lip, but he didn't have to ask. You couldn't run a newspaper without knowing all of the news going on around campus. "What's up?" he asked, unlocking the office. He still had to check the layout for this week's issue before running print. He was expecting a last-minute piece from Stacy on school vandalism. It was topical.
Jason checked the clock on his cell phone. Where was that girl? He shouldn't have agreed to help her out. "Yeah, I wanted to uh – " Dammit. He'd gone blank. "Talk to you. About the Sports features for the season. You know I really want to impress the scouts for UCLA and this is my last year…."
He continued as he saw Kat coming down the hall. Clapping Henry on the back, Jason turned him away from her direction and started walking with him the other way. "There's something I want to show you. In the trophy case…." He couldn't believe he was doing this.
Kat waited until Jason and Henry had turned the corner and then she let herself into the unlocked lab. She turned on the lights and glanced around. There were five computer stations set up in the middle of the room and a what looked like a copy machine on steroids that took up almost the entire far wall and, now that she thought about it, she wasn't even sure what the hell she was looking for. She knew the weekly paper always had inserts in it, school notices and coupons for businesses around the area. She also knew they weren't hand stuffed into the newspapers. So what she was looking for…were the inserts for this week's edition.
If she were a newspaper insert…where would she be?
Ah ha! There was another machine set off to the side that looked like it could be the culprit for stuffing several hundred newspapers once a week. And she was in luck. Resting atop one of the bins, facedown and ready to go, was a stack of fliers about the upcoming dance. With a smile, Kat unloaded the papers and, after another quick, frantic search, shoved them into a metal supply cabinet. Hopefully no one would find them before the papers were distributed.
She pulled her own stack of fliers out of her stuffed backpack and loaded up the tray again, face down and ready to go. For good measure, she went back and stole a couple of dance fliers and stuck them on top of her stack, just to avoid catching anyone's notice.
That done, she made sure everything else looked like it was in place and let herself out of the newspaper office.
Three hours later, when the Friday paper had been distributed to the classrooms and the students were finally starting to open them up, the laughter started. Kat just grinned to herself and headed to her next class. Everyone had officially been invited to the party of the school year.
