Full of surprises
Who: Jason and Cassie
Where: Reagan High
When: Friday afternoon
This... had been an interesting day, to say the least. Ever since being asked to the dance by one of the most obscenely popular boys in school, Cassie's infamous brain had barely been functioning. Instead, she'd been going through the typical thoughts of any starstruck teenaged girl. Now, she sat there, during the last period of the day, which happened to be her free period. Meaning? Her final hour of the day was spent sitting in the cafeteria getting a head start on her homework. She stared into her Trig book, barely registering what it said, wishing that Lucy would just walk in so she could gush to her.... oh god, this meant she had to let Lucy buy her a dress now! She looked down at her current attire: baggy, low-slung skater jeans, a snugly-fitting, pink, long-sleeved Supergirl shirt, and bright blue Chuck Taylors. Dear god. How was SHE going to look in a dress???
His last period was World History and Jason had to admit, it bored the hell out of him. He'd asked to go to the restroom fifteen minutes ago and he hadn't been back to class since. He'd drop back in a couple of minutes before the last bell and grab his books. For now, he was walking through the halls, doing his best impression of a guy on his way...somewhere. He passed the cafeteria and his footsteps slowed as he caught sight of a blonde head through the glass panes in the doors. Stopping, he turned around and pushed one of the doors open and then walked to the table where Cassie was sitting. "You're actually doing work during your free period?"
Cassie almost squeaked in surprise there. She wasn't really used to anyone talking to her during free period. Well, not unless they were making a nasty comment, which she generally ignored anyway. When she heard that now-familiar voice, she almost swooned. When she turned her head... she noticed he was alone. Which meant this wasn't for the benefit of anyone but the two of them. Paranoia aside... why would he do this to screw with her if nobody was really watching anyway? "Um... yeah. I was gonna spend the evening at my store tonight, and figured I could get most of my work done now." God, she felt like a dork right now. "Got a few to talk?"
She was cute when she got nervous. She was cute in general, but when she got that look on her face like she wasn't sure if he was just hanging around, waiting to kick her proverbial puppy, it just made him want to laugh. In a good way. He wasn't sure she'd see it that way. "Yeah. I got a few." Stepping up next to her, he leaned over her shoulder and braced a palm against the table as he looked down at her books and the work she'd been doing. "Trig. Fun." Pushing off of the table, he turned and hopped up onto the edge, feet propped up on the bench, and looked at her. "What's on your mind?"
Oh wow. That whole little thing he just did. The movements, the hopping-onto-the-table thing... she'd watched him do that hundreds of times, talking to other girls. Now it was their turn to watch. And it made her feel a little shameful, how GOOD that thought made her feel. "You seem like a really nice guy. And... let's be real honest. You can have any girl in this school you want." Hell, if rumors were to be believed, he HAD. "So... if I'm gonna believe this isn't just some scheme to make the dorky girl embarrassed at a dance like in Carrie... why me?"
He rested his elbows on his knees and leaned forward. All right, he guessed her question was fair, but he had one of his own. "Why NOT you?" He eyed her with a boyish grin. "If you think I'm such a nice guy, what's with all the suspicion?" Watching her a little longer, he shrugged finally. "All right, honestly? You were there. You were cute. And I felt like asking. You said yes. Are you going to back out on me now?"
"No, not at all!" Her voice gave away JUST how much she had no plans on backing out. Still, she owed him some blunt honesty. "As for suspicions? Let me be honest. I've had a massive crush on you since I came here last year. And you've been dating Camille off and on since then. And she looooooves to make my life miserable. And the whole time you were asking me, she was standing there snickering. You may not like trig... but I think even YOU can do that math, JC." She sighed, hoping she was neither offending him NOR putting her finger on the truth. "Also? Good things just don't happen to me that often. Here OR in real life."
She'd had a crush on him for that long? His brows rose at that piece of information. It wasn't that he was surprised - he was a good looking guy and he'd dated his fair share (or more than) of girls at Reagan High - but most of them never came right out and admitted their feelings like that. She also had a point about him tending to go back to Camille, but there was a story there and he didn't feel like getting into it. "Don't pay any attention to Camille. All she wants is attention and she's used to getting it. As for the other part." He reached over and tilted her chin up a little, turning her face up to his. "Don't be so pessimistic. Full disclosure? This morning wasn't the first time I noticed you."
"R-Really?" Cassie was honestly waiting for the other shoe to drop. She wasn't a downer by nature.. far from it, actually. But this? Was TOO good to be true, wasn't it? The nerdy little skater girls just didn't get the popular guys. Still... she found it in her to be a little courageous, just this once. "Well... nothing says we can't go out sometime BEFORE the dance, you know..."
He grinned and let his hand fall away. "All right. What do you want to do?" Was this the kind of thing his friends would call social suicide? He'd never had a problem hanging out with whomever he wanted, but this was different. His dating record spoke for itself. If anyone thought he had a type, it would have been drop-dead gorgeous. Cassie wasn't like those other girls. He wouldn't say that out loud because even he knew it sounded bad, but what he meant was that she wasn't full of herself. She didn't look like the kind of girl who spent two hours doing her hair or who refused to leave the house if they happened to have one small pimple. Besides all of that, she was STILL pretty. Just not the kind of girl his friends would approve of. They could have written off the dance as him putting Camille in her place. If he started seeing Cassie more than that? Well, screw them. He'd do what he wanted to do.
Well... maybe she *did* have a few 'cool' cards she could pull out of her hat. While this wasnt the type of boy to be impressed with her owning her own comic book store... she DID have something else that might be more up his alley... "Ever been to Avarice? I know the owner..." ok, technically, it was because one of her friends was dating the owner's cousin, but STILL. "I could probably get us some cool perks there..."
"Yeah?" His grin widened. "So first you know the girlfriend of Broken Sunrise's lead singer and now you know the owner of Avarice? You get around, don't you?" He was teasing, but he was a little impressed. He wouldn't deny it. "Yeah, I've been there though. Prom last year and...every once in a while I'll hit it up if a band I like is playing." It wasn't the kind of place Camille wanted to hang out, so his time there was limited when they were off-again.
"What can I say?" She was trying to be sly, flirty... and basically NOT geeky or lame, like she was feeling. "I'm full of surprises." She looked at him, and then felt her cool demeanor, her smarmy front, melt away when she saw him looking RIGHT INTO her eyes. It was the look of someone genuinely interested in what you had to say, and it just... turned her to mush. "Aw, crap in a hat... why do you gotta be so cute!!! I wanna be all flirty and stuff... and you're just turning me into a puddle of goo here."
He laughed and shook his head, pretty sure he should be embarrassed about that, but more amused that it seemed to get to her. "Thanks, I think. I could turn around, if you'd prefer that. We could talk back to back." That boyish grin returned as he glanced at her again, his hair falling into his face before reached up and raked his fingers through the shaggy mess. "You're cute when you do that. Get all nervous."
She just blushed there, her eyes going all sweetly wide. If this were an anime, this is where her eyes would be big crescent moons, and little hearts would be fluttering over her head. She'd never had a guy be this... smooth with her. This charming. "Glad ya like it..." she gulped. "Cuz I expect it'll be happening for a while. I just can't believe you actually like me. I mean, not that I'm calling you a liar cuz I'd never do that, I mean granted I kinda sorta did earlier, but you know where I was coming from I think, and oh my god I'm in ramble mode and I really don't know how the heck I'm gonna shut myself up and oh man do I feel dumb..." Yeah, the ramble threatened to go on FOREVER.
There was just something about her and Jason couldn't put his finger on it. Something sweet. Funny, sure. But not like the other girls he'd dated. Aside from the obvious, that was. And man, could she go on. He wasn't even sure he knew half of what she was talking about, but she kept going and going. He'd started to wonder if she'd ever have to stop and take a breath. "Wow," he said when she was finally done. "That...that was a lot." But he was still grinning and he hadn't run the other way, so there was a good chance she hadn't scared him off. "You're...different. You know that?"
She gave a sweetly embarrassed grin there, feeling the deep, deep blush creep onto her cheeks. "You... you have NO idea how right you are." She said with a sigh, hoping that one day, when he found out JUST how different... he'd still find her as cute and amusing.
She was probably right there, but he looked forward to finding out. It surprised him how much that was true. "So why don't I pick you up tomorrow night and we'll check out Avarice, if you're serious about going?"
Feeling a tad brave, she reached over and set one of her hands on top of one of his. Her voice sounded nearly heartbreaking in it's sincerity. "I... haven't been this serious about anything in a long, long time. Thank you, JC. Seriously."
"Hey, don't thank me yet. You might change your mind after you see me dance." He knew she was serious, or caught it in her tone, but he was trying to keep things light. Normal. Not like he was doing her some favor. Checking his watch again, he jumped down off of the table. "End of the day so I should probably get back to class." He was already heading out, though he kept his eyes on her as he walked backwards. "Tomorrow night," he reminded her. "Eight o'clock sound good to you?"
"Sounds..." she looked for the right word, while aware she was still all googly-eyed. "Perfect." For the first time since her Crisis-moment? Cassie Allen felt genuinely.... HAPPY.
