Getting Ready for a War
Who: Gunn, Max, and introducing Clinton Holmes
Where: Gunn's Hideout
When: Friday, early evening
Max was sitting on a wooden crate in the warehouse that Gunn and everyone sort of used as a headquarters/home for some of them, including her. Hey, she was a street kid and had been one since she was twelve. It wasn't like she could be picky. Besides, it was better than a cardboard box. She was actually going through her own purse to see what she had collected today from the pockets of the random rich people (well, they looked rich) that she had snagged wallets from. Hey, they all had to eat, right?
"Get anything good today, baby girl?" The voice came from the entrance, as, walking in was the tall, muscle-bound frame of Clinton Holmes. The dark, tattooed man gave her a bright smile though, one that was usually reserved just for her. "Cuz I managed to piece together a pretty sweet bike today... so unless you managed to pickpocket one's the Trumps or something, I think I got you beat."
Max grinned back at him. "Not sure yet," she said. "I'm about to find out. Hopefully it's something good, but I don't think I pocketed the wallet of a Trump, though. Think I would remember that."
"Plus you'da prolly got that nasty-ass hairpiece stuck to your hand." He added with a thick laugh. He walked over and playfully ruffled her hair. "Any fighting tonight?" He asked as he absently looked around, as if to see if any of their fellow vampire hunters were around.
There were a few people floating about, like there always was, but Gunn wasn't around at this moment in time. "Probably," Max said, picking up the first wallet and starting to go through it. "I'm never sure if we should chance credit cards," she said, looking the two over in this guy's wallet. "Plus, I don't look like a 'Harry Pride' do I?" She laughed. She then pulled sixty dollars out of the pack pocket. "Still, not a bad grab."
"Nope... not bad at all, Harry." He said with another chuckle, looking into his pocket and pulling out a small bottle with a generic-looking prescription label on it. "Just be careful, Max... don't wanna go pickin' from people that don't deserve it. Don' wanna end up gettin' shot or anything either."
"Nah, I know who to pick, anyway," she said, already going to the next wallet. "Taking your daily meds?" she asked, not looking up at the moment.
"Yeah... gotta be a good little boy and take my vitamins, after all..." He grumbled, pocketing it again. He knew none of them really approved of what he did, but they didn't give him grief over it, because they knew he did it to help them. "Big Man around? Figure we got somethin' big comin' soon... seems like there's been more bloodsuckers around than normal lately."
"Something big is coming, I think," Max said. "Lots of people on the streets are edgy as of late...well, more than usual." She looked up at him. "I think Gunn might be in the back. I'm sure he's around here somewhere."
"See?" He said cheerily, flexing his arm. "S'why y'all need my supermuscle round these parts." He winked at her, always unable to help but flirt with the girl.
"Yep!" she said with a grin. "I think we're going to need everything that we can get, though. Never hurts to have such big strong men around, anyway."
"That's right!" He said, jokingly picking her up then, and hoisting her to a sitting position on his flexed bicep, like it was no big deal. "Forget pickin' pockets... we gon' get money sellin' tickets to the gun show!"
lena7623: While Max was squealing and shrieking from being picked up, Gunn walked up with a mixture of an amused and exasperated look on his face. "Am I interrupting anything, guys?"
Clinton immediately set her down, and his face turned serious. It was obvious that he held Gunn in the utmost of respect. "Not a thing. Just lookin' for you, actually."
"Right..." Yeah, he'd seen how he looked at Max. Still, more important matters at hand. "So, what did you want to talk about?" he asked as he motioned for Clinton to walk with him.
"It's gettin' bad out there, G." He said, a rare glimmer of worry in the bigger man's voice. "We're getting into fights with bigger and bigger numbers, and I ain't sure what you wanna do to deal with it." He shook his head. "Cuz I know damn sure I don't want none of y'all doin' what I do."
Gunn shook his head. He didn't like what Clinton was doing. Not one bit. Still, it helped them, and he wasn't being forced, so he couldn't say shit about it. "It's getting wild out that, that's for damn sure. I'm not sure what's going on, but something's up."
"Look, man... you know I respect you. But those bloodsuckers already killed my first family... I ain't about to stand here and let 'em kill y'all too." Hell... the things he did to his own body in the name of this war werent things a person that had a real family would ever do.
"This is the only family I've got, too," Gunn told him. Well, other than his sister, but it was like they were more like one big family. "Don't forget that, either. I'm going to do everything I can to protect them. We need to find out what's going on, though. We're getting flooded with bloodsuckers lately."
"The guy I get my... meds from. He said he has some ties with a few of the 'wolves in LA. He's gonna talk to them, see if he can get us any information." Clinton smiled sarcastically and punched his palm. "You can say I... talked him into it."
Gunn rolled his eyes, but nodded just the same. They needed to find out what the fuck was going on, by any means necessary. "We'll know about it soon enough."
"Look man... no disrespect meant, but... we're running out of time. How long until someone we care about that isn't already part of this fight gets pulled into?" He sighed, looking worried, which he rarely did. "What if one of them gets Silky? Or maybe that little snow bunny you been chattin' up at the club? You really ready to take that chance, man?"
"I got some contacts that I can talk to, Clint," he said to him, looking him the eye for a moment. "I know the situation that we're in. What we do is protect those that don't need to be in this fight. We'll get them. We always do."
"I know, G. I do. I just... I've never seen it this bad. And I feel like we need to do more." He looked back to make sure Max was out of hearing range. "Like Max, brother... she's a good kid. She helps us... but do you think she can really handle herself if things get too much worse?"
He'd better be glad that Max was out of range, or he'd have a foot upside his head somehow. "Max has been taking care of herself since she was twelve. Still, this might overwhelm us all if we don't watch out."
"Understood." He nodded respectfully. He might not have agreed with Gunn's reluctance to take a more aggressive stance, but he also respected him too much to continue arguing.
Gunn wasn't even reluctant to save his own hide. No, when it came to him, he was first in line. He didn't want to risk some of the others. Some like Max just weren't built for serious combat like what was coming. "We'll get this. Don't worry."
"With your permission..." somehow, when he got down to business, his speech changed, from street and relaxed to almost military. "I'd like to see what my informant can find out. See if it can lead us to possible allies, or maybe better weapons."
Gunn nodded. "Good idea on both counts. I'll be doing my own scouting, but go ahead. We'll need all the help we can get for this."
"Thanks." He clapped a hand on Gunn's shoulder. "I think you know by now.. but I'll gladly give my life for you guys, G. This is my life now."
"It's all of our lives now," Gunn said, looking around at the few kids who were in right now. "Wouldn't change it, either."
"I gotta go put this lil' concoction together..." he said, shaking the bottle in his pocket. "Get it ready for tomorrow. Gotta stay on m'cycle, after all." He said with a laugh that was meant to make it seem like it was no big deal.
Gunn smiled a little and shook his head. "You get after that then."
