Fall Out
WHO: Jilleen Simmons & James Chase
WHERE: Battlestar Avalon
WHEN: Evening 04-12-Y02
After she opened the door, Jilleen stepped inside her husband’s semi-private quarters. “James?” she called out his name thinking he was sleeping behind the privacy curtains of his bunk. There was no answer. She closed the door behind her, and walked over to the bunk and opened the curtains. The bunk was empty. It was a relief. She had a little bit more time.
She went over to a locker where she kept her things. James’ cabin was meant for three officers to share, but he shared it with the senior LSO who was staying somewhere else to give them some privacy. The third billet was empty. At the wall locker she began to change out of her dress gray uniform into more comfortable fitness sweats.
Jilleen was tempted to go find Elihu and ask him what they both said this evening at dinner, but it was too risky at this point. She had faith in him and believed he would not expose their relationship. Except James might have picked up on something he said or maybe someone else said something. She and Elihu were very careful, but anything is possible. James had friends serving on Sagittaron.
She shook her head. Don’t over think, she thought to herself. “My gods, what if he had known all this time?” she mouthed in silences. Her thoughts only made her worried worst, she had to remain calm if she was going to try to deny it. She did not want to hurt him.
At the small work desk, she opened her laptop and signed online to the secure network. It was only in the last few years that networks have been allowed on warships again since the last Great War against the Cylons. It was believed the incredible amount of firewall protection and security programs would keep the networks from unauthorized access, plus many networks were independent and separated from key areas of control. It was also an improvement.
Jilleen was about to check her email when the door open.
“You’re back earlier,” James said dryly. He looked as if he had just returned from the fitness center with a sweat soaked t-shirt.
“Surprise!” she said with a bright smile. It might just throw him off a little bit, because she wanted to avoid the ‘talk’. No matter what mixed up roller coaster ride of a relationship trouble they had at the moment, she still felt strong feelings for him in her heart. She would call it love but it did not seem true, not after what she had done.
“I am,” he closed the door behind him and walked over to his locker. In the brief moment of silence, Jilleen got up from the chair. “Did you get my message?” he asked.
“What message?” she quickly replied. When James turned around he found Jilleen had move directly behind him.
“Come on Jill don’t play games. I know you don’t go without five minutes checking your messages on your phone when you’re working.”
“Do you mean the one about you having dinner with Eli?” she replied without missing a beat. “It wasn’t much of a message, James. I thought I missed something there for a moment.” She placed a hand on her shoulder. “I know you are still cross with me for skipping on our dinner date.” She glanced at his chest. “What did you think of him?” She stopped herself from gulping to give him no indication that she was worried about his answer.
“I got this vibe,” he lifted her chin with his finger to look directly in her green eyes, “and I had some time to think about it. I’m okay with you two. He seems like a good guy. I just wished you told me.”
“What?” She could see it in his eyes that he meant what he said, but this was not what she expected. How could he say it was okay? She was confused.
“I suspected for a while you were seeing someone. I just didn’t know he was a dirt-eater …”
“Frak you,” she pulled herself away. It hurt her worst that he seemed to not care than him knowing she was having an affair with another man. Anger erupted and before she knew it, her hand slapped his face. “Apollo’s dick! You have the nerve.” She returned back to the desk, away from him.
He rubbed his cheek and tasted a hint of blood at the corner of his mouth. She held nothing back on that strike. “Jill tell me I was wrong then.”
She was shaking inside. It was the first she ever struck him in anger. Jilleen could not face him. Instead she closed her laptop and picked it up before he asked if he was wrong. She stood still for a moment, and closed her eye before taking a deep breath. When she let go of her breath, she replied. “No.”
Unable to face her husband right now, “I got go.” She put her computer into a carrying case and grabbed a garment bag and a pair of shoes. James had not said a word and she did not look at him. She would have to come back later for the rest of her things. She walked out and he did not protest. She avoided eye contact with others in the corridor as headed to VIP section of the ship where she still had a bunk reserved as the aide-de-camp. All she wanted to do was not to break down.
