Delicate Times
WHO: Vice Admiral Conrad Pierce & Rear Admiral Thomas Burk
WHERE: Burk's wardroom, Battlestar Avalon
WHEN: Y02 04 Dec
“Tom, I always felt that I could count on you. When you were my CAG on the Columbia, you never let me down,” Conrad Pierce said before having a sip of brandy from his glass. “You always had a frakking bottle of my favorite in your office.”
“That’s easy sir, we both have the same fine taste for brandy,” Burk lifted up his glass which was filled with Santino Gold Select, a premium brandy from Virgon.
“Aye,” he lifted his own glass. “Cheers.”
“Yiamas,” replied Burk in his native Tauran language. Both admirals pulled a drink from their brandy.
“I forget you have roots on Tauron,” Pierce said.
“My mother was from Aerilon, and whipped my ass when I got my first tattoo when I was eleven. Some things you can’t forget, so I always keep them to a minimum and hidden. Gods rest her soul.”
“Hell, I don’t blame you, Aerilonian women are set in their ways, and don’t take much BS from anyone. I should know, I married one.”
“Right, I hear that sir.” Burk acknowledged while thinking of his mother for a moment.
“Anyway, you’ve heard that I relieved my Chief of Staff?” Pierce asked.
“Yes, sir.”
“I had no choice really. He personally insulted Sagittaron’s new Prime Minister. I really don’t blame Commander Blake. The new P.M. is a frakking idiot, a thin-skinned egomaniac. He’s going to be trouble.” He looked at Burk. “And we thought Zarek was problem.”
“That’s the scuttlebutt I’ve heard.”
“Whoever is responsible for the assassinations picked their targets well if they wanted to set back all the progress in the last forty years. It’s why I’m here today.” Pierce took another sip before continuing. “The President asked me to speak with Tauron’s new leader.”
“What for, if you don’t mind me asking sir?”
“We both served together in the war. So the President thinks I might have some pull. What I’m about to tell you, keep to yourself.” He paused a moment for Burk’s acknowledgment. “My old wing man informed the President last night his intention to withdraw Tauron from the Articles of Colonization. You know what that means?”
Burk nodded. Unification of the Twelve Colonies if dissolved would put the Colonies at risk and weaken the Colonial Forces. “It means I might be out of a job,” Burk joked, but there was lots of truth to his statement. As a Tauran, his oath to the Colonial Forces would be nullified and commission revoked.
“You can say that Tom. It’s why I want you to come with me tomorrow. Help me talk sense to the rusty old viper pilot before he decides to go public with his intentions.”
“I am at your service, sir.”
“Good, I didn’t want to ask Cain, the bitch kisses too much butt.” They both laughed.
