Caprican Friend
The valley under a clear and sunny day made it a very nice day for a ride out into the back country. While Jill waited for her friend to arrive to the stables, she prepared her own horse for the ride, while one of the ranch hands prepared another horse for her friend. She looked forward to seeing her friend and giving her some good news.
Jill had met Blake,or as she called her Mars, back on Caprica, where they both belong to an equestrian club and shared a passion for horses. When she was posted on Caprica she had often gone on horseback rides with the club on the weekends. Mars had boarded her horse in the next stall to her own horse, and so they often saw each other back then.
It was good to get away from things for a while, work in particular and today made for an interesting distraction from the regular routine. Time had seemed to have swallowed up months since the last time she had taken a day off let alone the last time she had managed to sneak away and see her friend. Blake strolled around the stables looking for Jill, knowing that she was late and that Jill was not one to demonstrate a great deal of patience when it came to waiting to do something fun. She had to admit, she shared that inability especially when it came to her fondness for horses. "Jill"
She heard her name and turned around with a brush in her hand on her white horse. Jill brought the brush off the horse and dropped it in a bucket, and then rushed over toward the medical officer. "Mars!" She wrapped her arms around the doctor in a friendly hug, and then kissed her on the cheek as she would do for any good friend.
Without really having much chance to do anything, Blake wrapped her arms around her good friend with a smile brandished. The hug was fine, friendly but she could not just let the kiss slide. "I never knew you felt that way about me Jill, I'm flattered" She smirked, raising an eyebrow in the process. It was good to let the hair down once in a while.
Jill pulled away enough to still keep Blake close at arm's length and smiled. "You Capricans are so always reserve," she teased. Jill had always been the type to show affection for her friends when not in uniform. This was completely the opposite if she were in uniform among other soldiers. She did her best to keep those two worlds separate in her life.
"So how was your trip?" Jill asked.
"The usual, not that I'm complaining or anything. I need the break" Blake nodded, she had grown used to the raptor rides back and forth from the fleet to the colonies and considering her profession, she received regular chances to travel between the colonies. This trip was different, no viral outbreaks or military accidents had drawn her from the Avalon. It was pure, uninterrupted leave thanks to her commanding officer who insisted she take some leave. "So, how you been?"
"I'm not so bad. It's wonderful to have returned home," she said before grabbing her friends arm for a moment as she leaned toward her from the side. "I've been assigned to your ship." She let go. Jill had intended to keep that a secret till she had told her brother and father first, but she had to tell Blake.
The surprising news forced her to stop walking as she turned her head to look at her friend and nodded, "Ah, this could be a problem. I mean, us on the same ship. I mean that kiss, it is obvious that you have feelings for me and...you know I can't....come here" Blake reached out and grabbed a hand, pulling her friend in for a hug, wrapping her arms around again for the second hug in as many minutes. "It is about time"
Jill began to laugh at the whole idea of them being a couple because the both of them were straight. "I was going to ask if we could share a cabin aboard the battlestar, but on second thought ...?" She teased as she broke from Blake. Jill as a staff officer and Blake as a flight surgeon, they were allowed quarters in two to three person cabins, rather than the barrack type quarters for regular pilots and crews.
"Yeah, I can see what you mean but as long as you promise to behave yourself around me then I don't see a problem with us sharing" She winked at Jill, the teasing continuing as if it was a sport, a game of chess to see who would win.
"Hey, don't think because I worked with Admiral Cain for a couple of weeks that I will be open to you're advances, Missy." She warned with a finger pointed at her friend. There had been some rumors about the tough as nails female Admiral who now commanded the Battlestar Pegasus. A ship that Jill had been once posted to before Cain took command of the battlestar last year.
"Oh so that is how it is? You think you can resist me? I guess we'll be finding out soon enough then" Blake could not recall the last time she had freedom to actually enjoy herself socially since the pilots on the Avalon had little time for a medic as they referred to her and the marines were just too tough as nails to actually want treatment from a surgeon, she rarely found herself being socially active on board. It was great to know she would have a friend on board.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're not my type," she winked at Blake as they got to where she left her horse tied up by the stable. "So anyway, I have a week or so before I have to report to Admiral Burk for duty." She reached up to pet her horse's neck for a second. "I have a horse ready for you." Jill nodded at one of the stable workers, who spoke to another to bring Blake's horse.
"Madam," said the stable worker as he handed Jill her riding helmet. She did not think anything of the attention she got from the worker. All her life she had been accustomed to others being employed by her father to attend to the minor details and follow her request as they were. Jill belonged to one of Aerilon's aristocratic families. There was a wide separation from the farm laborers and the landowner class on Aerilon.
Jill turned to face her friend, "I hope you don't mind that I picked your horse." The Simmon's Ranch had a large stable of horses.
"No, not at all Jill. It has been a while so I'm a little rusty considering I spend most of my time up above" Blake shrugged as she reserved her nerves for later.
"Good," replied Jill as the dark brown horse was brought over.
