RP: Why are you hiring me?
Who: Albus Potter, Daily Prophet workers (NPC)
Where: Daily Prophet offices, Diagon
When: July 8, 2024
Rating/Warnings: none
Summary: Albus has his assistant-ship interview
Status: Closed

Albus wasn't nervous about getting the job. He knew he would. The same strange awe he has shown his own father growing up, had been bestowed upon Harry Potter and his children for as long as Albus had known anything at all about the world. He would get the job at the Daily Prophet because he was Albus Severus Potter and there was no question about it. He could join Auror training like his older brother had, or go into politics, he could become a professor or a scholar; Albus knew that his name alone would bring him anything he wanted.

Which was the very last thing he wanted. Instead of another gift, Albus had instead decided to do the one thing that might possible pull him out of the Potter shadow - become a lowly assistant, checking facts, writing up Knight Bus accident reports, at The Daily Prophet.

Now, in his suit but not in robes, he floo'd to the Leaky Cauldron and moved into Diagon Alley, stopping long enough to make sure his tie was straight before heading into the office. Flashing a slightly awkward grin at the lady at the front desk he introduced himself and she said that the hiring manager would be out in just a moment, please take a seat, Mr. Potter. She gave him a lipstick-full smile and he had to stop himself from grimacing. People were shameless.

When the hiring manager came out, Al stood and shook his hand, giving him the same lopsided smile that people said made Albus look like his dad. he was ushered into the back room and before the manager could begin, asked a simple, pointed question. "Why are you interested in hiring me?" He wanted to know from the beginning, even if the answer was 'well, you're your father's son' he just wanted to know for sure.

Elliot Eades was taken aback slightly by the young man's blunt question, but he didn't let that deter him from the matter at hand. "Why am I interested in hiring you?" he repeated the question, tapping the papers he'd brought with him once on the table to straighten them. "Well, Mr Potter, I suppose I'm interested in hiring you because you're interested in working here. You, ah--" and here he showed his first signs of a stumble, forehead creasing as he mentally went over what he knew, "--did come to apply for our assistant's job, correct?"

He looked at Albus Potter over the tops of his glasses (ah, what a life of reading did to you!) and raised both eyebrows. He hadn't yet been wrong about what sort of interview he was going to, but he supposed there was always a first.

Albus nodded slowly, surprised, his mouth in a slight 'O'. "Yes, I did," he answered, regaining his composure, his voice deepening slightly like it had a habit of doing. "I suppose what I'm trying to make sure is that you're interested in merit, not in... Other things I may bring to an office environment," as much as he wanted to write, Albus had been raised to be suspicious of the press - especially the Prophet.

Oh, how he loved his job sometimes. Playing with people's expectations was always a fun chore. "I suppose that is true," Elliot mused, rubbing at his chin in thought. "You might stun and awe the rest of your coworkers into not doing their work--oh, wait." He glanced up at the ceiling with a disgusted look on his face. "They already get distracted enough on their own."

He knew that Daphne's wedding to that daft Scottish Muggle was coming up soon enough, but that didn't mean he wanted to hear discussion about it every time he walked out on the floor!

"You might--oh, no, they do that already, too." Elliot frowned, casting his eyes around the room for inspiration, but he found nothing. "Nope, I've no idea what you could be talking about."

Elliot pulled out one of the chairs from the table, gesturing toward the other as he sat down. "Mr Potter, take a seat. It's my turn to ask you a question, now. Have you got a good grasp of the English language?"

He'd seen the young man's writing samples, of course, but he was trying to make a point here.

Albus couldn't help the rare smile that brightened up his dark features. He liked this man a great deal.

Nodding, he took the seat, "I believe I do. I have spoken it most of my life," the serious tone belied his smile and he hoped that joking from underlings was allowed around here.

"I also speak small bits of Italian and Spanish, though I'm not sure that will be as helpful around here."

"Good, good," Elliot nodded, scratching a little note down on his sheet. He laid his quill down and looked back up at Albus, offering the youth a wry smile. "This's more what I'm interested in, Mr Potter. Your father may be who he is--" he didn't say the name; he wasn't interested in making this into more than it was, "--but fame means little in my world."

Fame belonged on the other side; the famous were the ones who were interviewed, not who did the interviewing; how often did he think bylines really got looked at; quite often he found the famous to have less sense than some of his writers upstairs.

"And so unless you know past from present tense and how to come up with a good hook for an article and just where you might go to find out how many times Dilys Spriggs has been taken in for questioning regarding the Misuse of Muggle Objects, I'm not interested in hiring you, Mr Potter," Elliot finished in a quick breath, only vaguely aware of the fact that Albus hadn't heard the myriad of "next line" ideas that had gone through his head before he'd spoken.

He paused for a moment, looking at the man with what he hoped was a good meaningful stare before continuing, a smile finally coming to his face. "However, I've read your samples, and it appears to me that you do know your past from your present, and you do know a good hook and all of that other business, and so I am, in fact, rather interested in continuing this interview."

A bit long-winded, but he hoped he'd at least put to rest some of the suspicions Albus might have had about the opportunity. "Now," Elliot said, picking up his quill again, "please forgive me for moving on so abruptly, but tell me--what made you decide you wanted to pursue a job with the Prophet?"

Albus took a breath as Eliot went on - the man obviously knew how to run a news floor, he was impressive. Thankfully, Al wasn't easily intimidated and he gave another smile before answering. "I've always enjoyed the craft of writing as well as the business of the news; the Prophet being the premier handler of both in our world, it was the only forgone conclusion." The Ravenclaw in him peaked out for a moment. "It seems to me that pursuing that which combines all that I love is a very logical choice." It really was that simple for him - research, grammatical structure, the use of language - it made him lighter than anything besides maybe spending a day with his father just the two of them.

"Indeed," murmured Elliot as he jotted a couple quick notes down--good use of words, logic, 'craft of writing... only forgone conclusion'--and looking back up. He liked this lad already. He hadn't let himself be thrown off by Elliot's quick attack on his expectations. "However, you surely know that you can't expect to write the front page just from the get go. And I'm sure you've done some research before applying for this position..."

His eyes glittered slightly. He'd lost count by now how many potential employees had fallen here--but they were interviewing for a job with the Prophet; why wouldn't they have thought to do their research before the interview? It reflected badly on what they would do in the future when going on interviews where they would be on the opposite side of the table.

"So, Mr Potter, what do you expect that this job entails? Tell me what you expect to find yourself doing if we hire you."

Grinning here, Albus felt himself leaning forward at the next point, "Actually I wouldn't want to write op-eds just yet." He knew it was a strange answer to the inquiry, but he had to be honest. "I want to help copy edit, fact check, things like that. I figure there will be lots of tea making and copy charms in my future, but I want to know the business from the ground up."

He slowed down here, "I mean it when I say I'm interested in the business of the news. I want to know what every job on the floor encompasses, and I hope that by starting out at the barest level, I'll get that experience. Besides, I'm a sucker for red quill marks," he added sheepishly.
