RP: Grimmauld Place
Who: Remus, Regulus, Jamie and Sirius
Where: Grimmauld Place
When: 17 December, 2025
Summary: It's time to put up the tree

Remus wanted Christmas, and Regulus decided that it was just what he would get. With Dolan and Kreacher's help, they found all the ornaments that Kreacher had saved, and then it was out to purchase as many trees and decorations as humanly possible. Everything had been hidden downstairs. All the trees and wreaths had been magically turned white, all the ornaments and bows were different shades of blue, purple and gold. On Friday, while Remus was in the library, they began putting all the smaller trees in the stairways and common rooms. Each room had a tree and decorations, before they moved into the sitting room.

The tree for this room reached the ceiling and its girth took plenty of space. Finally, satisfied with everything, Regulus sent the house elves to find everyone who was at home.

It was time to decorate the tree.

Remus had put the journals away for the time being and spent the last few days making Christmas arrangements of his own. If he'd been overwhelmed with the idea of being able to celebrate and give gifts to friends the year before, he was possibly on overload this year, having family and friends and the means to equal the sentiments in his gifts. Though he wasn't thinking any such thing, anyone else might think it prudent to warn the other members of the household to beware the werewolf bearing Christmas cheer in a few days time.

When Kreacher brought him Regulus' request to join him in the sitting room, Remus set aside the letter he was writing to confirm his appointment to review one particular gift and went to find his lover.

He wasn't expecting to walk into Father Christmas' private winter wonderland and he was absolutely certain he'd never seen a tree that big in anyone's house, let alone his own, or one so white. Grinning, he moved closer and wrapped his arms around Regulus. "Someone has been a very busy man, it looks like."

Regulus grinned. "You should see the rest of the house. In fact--" He grabbed Remus' hand and dragged him out into the staircase, showing the tree already lit there, and leaning over the rail to show all the other ones. "There's more upstairs."

He turned to kiss Remus, smiling. "Those have been done for you all ready. This one we get to decorate ourselves. I told Kreacher and Dolan to find the others as well, but I think Belvina and Ginny are out, which leaves the four of us." That made it even more perfect as far as he was concerned. "However since they aren't here yet, we can start without them. I'm sure we have plenty of ornaments for everyone."

Laughing, Remus let himself be led out to the stairway. He leaned over to look up at the landings for the other floors and thought this was most probably unlike any Christmas this house had seen before. Somehow, he didn't imagine there'd been this much Christmas Cheer in the house years ago.

"Sirius is going to think you've gone mad, you realise this?" he chuckled, returning the kiss. "But, I love it. Thank you." Even if he hadn't known Regulus well enough now to connect their conversation from the Lighting to this decorating explosion, the other man's use of pronouns was a pretty good sign of what had inspired it. "Their loss if they're too slow. Show me what we have."

Remus felt about five years old again with all this and he doubted he'd stop smiling as long as all the decorations were up to remind him why he was so happy on a daily basis.

"Sirius is mad. I don't think he'd know the difference anyway," he answered, chuckling. "Don't mention it. It's Christmas, right? Eat, drink, be happy and decorate. Isn't that the spirit of Christmas?" he teased, because Christmas and pureblood ideals didn't really go hand in hand, but he could do this part.

He went back into the sitting room, not letting go of Remus' hand and then pointed to three huge trunks. "Blue, purple and gold," he said, pointing to each trunk. "I'm sure you can see all of them anyway. That smaller box are old ones, so probably silver and crystal, less gaudy and more expensive. Basically those are the Slytherin ornaments and these are the Gryffindors."

Remus' chuckles echoed those of Regulus and he kissed his lover again. "Eat, drink, be happy, and decorate. Something like that."

Letting Regulus lead him back into the sitting room, he eyed three trunks full of Christmas ornaments with something akin to awe, both for the fact there were three huge trunks of ornaments and, more importantly, they were all in colours he could see easily. It was like Christmas was just for him. "So, if I want to practice my juggling," he teased, pointing at the trunks and then the smaller box, "use those and the one in there?

"I think we're missing something, though." His expression grew serious, though there was still a laughing light in Remus' eyes. With a gentle wave, he called up music the same as he had when they'd had their dance in the sunlight. Soft carols this time instead of a waltz. "There, now we can decorate."

"See, I know that I had it right," he said, grinning.

Regulus snorted. "I wouldn't recommend it. Kreacher protected those through decades, different ownerships and wars. He might be more upset than me, and house elves can be very spiteful."

He started to laugh when the music started. "Oh, my mother would have despised this with a passion. All this cheery spirit would have forced her to crucio someone, just to even things out." Most likely Sirius, because he'd be the one going for the Christmas spirit, but that was best not said. "Why don't you start and I'll get us something to drink? Eggnog or cider?"

Remus hummed thoughtfully. "Better not then. I prefer not having Kreacher mad at me. Always said that was the first lesson you should learn at Hogwarts -- stay on the house elves' good side." He winked conspiratorially. "Easier to get an extra bit of chocolate from kitchen raids that way.

"So long as you don't despise it." Turning from the trunk he was about to open, Remus shook his head. All of this was nice and Remus loved the whole thing from tree to lights to all the soppy clichés of the season. But, not enough to insist on any of it if Regulus didn't like it.

"Cider, please." Smiling, he finally opened the trunk, floating four baubles off the top and making them dance in the light from the afternoon sun coming through the window for a moment before he plucked one from the air to place on the tree. He didn't even realise he'd begun humming along to the music as he sent a second one up higher on the tree.

"Or not get poisoned," he said, casually. "You do know how Kreacher used to treat Sirius. That should be an idea how vengeful he can be." Regulus didn't think for a moment that the old house elf would ever treat him like he had treated Sirius, but he also had no intention of upsetting him.

He shook his head. "No, I don't despise it." Even if he did, watching Remus' reaction would make up for that. "You're adorable with decorations around. You look about ten when you look at the tree. The possibility of making fun of you makes up for any negative feelings I might have."

Regulus nodded, and went to the trolley to get the cider. Of course, when he turned around to give the glass to Remus, he was more interested in watching his lover, who really looked like a child. "You really enjoy this."

Sirius expected some kind of decorations for the holidays - he liked decorations for the holidays, things like the Lighting Ceremony and all of that were fun. What he did not expect however was to come out of his room and find that Christmas had exploded throughout the house. He followed the trail of smaller trees and wreaths here and there until he started following the sound of music instead.

And then he found his brother and Remus sharing cider and decorating a tree together. "I can't leave you two alone for even a second can I?" He asked leaning against the door frame, amusement plain on his face.

"Isn't decorating supposed to be a family affair?" He asked with a smirk. It was strange to think how much life had changed, from last Christmas to this year, how many little things were different and how that changed the whole so dramatically. He still remembered how things were strained between him and his brother even a year ago, while he tried to find some balance between the past and present.

"I did send Kreacher to call you," Regulus said, trying not to laugh. "It's not my fault that even now, he still can find ways to avoid a direct order just to annoy you."

He put down his glass and went to the trolley to fill a glass for Sirius as well. "Here, this is as far as I'll go in the name of the Christmas spirit," he joked, "but you can make it up to me by helping Remus with all of this while I watch the two Gryffindors go overboard with decorations." He wouldn't mention the fact that he had supervised the decorating of the rest of the house.

"I was telling Remus how much Mother would have hated all of this," he said with a smirk, because that was enough of a reason to do it.

"Kreacher is going to hold a grudge until one of us is dead." Sirius said shaking his head and grinning, though it would probably be until Kreacher himself died - because Sirius had died and the elf was still not fond of him, not that Sirius ever expected him to be. He did wonder though if Kreacher had told James, and decided to tell Dolan for good measure.

Sirius took the glass his brother offered him and chuckled. "What you went to all this trouble to set up things and now you're just going to sit there and watch while we do all the work?" He asked him arching an eyebrow at Regulus. "I have a feeling there is more than one Gryffindor who wouldn't mind a little extra help going overboard."

Sirius laughed then. "Oh yes she really would have, it's bad enough there isn't even any green here, but the music and cider." He tutted. "Mother would have a fit if she knew."

"Yes, we were just discussing how annoying house elves will make them hate you for life. You and Kreacher are the perfect example, but at least you've learnt. I haven't heard any complaints from Dolan," he said, grinning.

"Well, of course." Regulus sat down and fixed his robe. "Why would I want to do the work when I can watch you two do it for me." His eyes moved over Remus' back. "And I have a really good view from here."

He laughed with Sirius and that was a new experience. They were used to laughing at each other during school, which always left a bitter taste in Regulus' mouth, no matter which side he was on at any given time. "At least there's no red either. We're balancing."

Jamie was at the Ministry when he had not one, but two house elves tell him that when he got home he should go to the sitting room since Master Regulus was decorating. He'd have to figure out what that was all about. However, he needed to finish work, before leaving at a normal time for once.

When he got home, he went straight to the sitting room. "You know, I really don't need two house elves to tell me the same thing. Sending Kreacher was enough." He went and kissed Sirius as he took his cloak off. "It is bloody freeing out there. You'd think that the Dementors are still around."

"Work? This is playtime." Remus raised an eyebrow, turning his head to look at his lover just in time to catch the appraisal. Chuckling, he shook his head and sent another handful of ornaments floating through the air in Sirius' direction. "Except, I seem to be the only Gryffindor with their hands on the ornaments."

James walked in just about then, however, and Remus had to laugh softly at the younger man's complaints. "All the more reason for you to join the Gryffindors of this family in making this tree look less naked while Regulus pretends to supervise the resulting chaos."

"Naked? Are you crazy? It looks like the North Pole had an explosion and all the trees and decoration landed in this house," he said, laughing. "If we aren't careful with all of the flames, the entire house is going up on fire." Considering the sights at Garden Court and Godric's Hollow, he was happy never to see another fire again.

"All right, let's get this thing done, and is there any reason why there isn't a single green tree in the entire house?" he asked as he reached into one of the trunk and looked at the purplish ornament. "You know, I get that when you shag another bloke people assume that you're gay, but couldn't we find some less girlish colours."

"I never did anything to him." Sirius protested, which wasn't exactly true - even in the beginning Kreacher had always preferred Regulus to Sirius, at least in Sirius' mind. But then Sirius had been good at being an arse to everyone when he was younger, so he didn't exactly doubt that he'd done something at one point to offend the elf.

He smirked when Remus set a handful or ornaments on him and he easily took over plucking a few from the air to hang on the tree. "I can't help that you're overeager to get your hands on the family ornaments, Moony." He smirked at his friend just as Jamie joined them.

"Couldn't be too careful, it seems a certain house elf has a faulty memory when it comes to some people, just wanted to make sure you weren't going to be left out." He chuckled when James complained about the elves, at least he'd gotten the message.

Sirius hung another ornament on the tree and then wrapped his arms around James and pressed another kiss to his lips. He shrugged though when James asked about the colors. "You'll have to ask our supervisor about that he took care of the color scheme this year."

"Pads, you will never know what I get my hands on," he said with a smirk.

Remus laughed when James went on about the north pole exploding. "Yes, but those trees are out there and this one is huge and has less than a dozen ornaments on it." Of course, the ornaments would get on the tree faster if Remus didn't insist on making them fly through the air first. Regulus was right, he probably looked about ten years old right then.

Not that he cared.

"The colours themselves are not 'girlish'," he said with a self-conscious chuckle. "Purple's been the colour of kings for centuries. I dare you to tell Moody Ravenclaw blue is girlish. And white and gold are both gender neutral. Besides," he added offhandedly, putting the tree between himself and the two of them with the excuse of hanging an ornament there, "red and green are a muddy mess when you can't tell what they are. I like it this way."

He didn't know if Regulus wanted them to know he was catering to Remus' sight or not. So, Remus would play it off as unimportant. It wasn't important to anyone but him, in any case.

Regulus had been prepared to lie if needed. He wasn't above doing it, even if they were Sirius and James. In fact, he didn't think that absolutes meant much. Never lie was just another absolute that he didn't have to pay attention to, but then Remus explained, even if not in an obvious manner.

"I picked colours that we would all see, especially the child of the house, who playing with the decorations," he added, very calmly, and daring anyone to say anything further on the subject.

"And believe me, I am quite happy to never know where your hands go." He assured Remus with a grin.

Sirius arched an eyebrow and glanced around the tree at Remus' comment about red and green, and then Regulus had stepped in to add his own reasoning to the colors they had chosen for Christmas this year. Well that was new, and he was surprised that he'd known Remus for so long and not been aware of his issues with color - it was certainly never something he'd noticed, but then he was well aware of just the types of lengths Remus went to in order to hide his condition from people, particularly when they were younger.

"Ah, it all makes sense now." Sirius chuckled putting a few more ornaments on the tree. "You picked the colors, to get a special thank you later tonight, I get it." He smirked at his brother. "That's all you had to say, we get it."

Remus smiled as Regulus spoke up, recognising the tone. He didn't really mind the others knowing he had restrictions in his colour vision. It was just one of those things he'd never really talked about much. Although, he did have to meet Sirius' raised eyebrow with one of his own. It had been a little difficult to hide the months of colour study he'd done trying to pass his Potions OWL.

"Pads," he said warningly, flashing his friend a teasing grin, "if you really don't want to know where my hands go, you probably shouldn't speculate on the methods by which Regulus will be repaid for the gesture."

He sent another batch of ornaments into the air and directed them over in James' direction, two of them 'tumbling' over each other on the way. "I always thought playing with the decorations was part of the process. Of course, usually that was tinsel and flocking." So saying, he conjured a small handful of flocking and let it 'snow' down on top of Sirius' head with an innocent smile.

James saw the exchange and rolled his eyes, because these three had too much history and too many unspoken discussions, and he liked words too much to go that route. "Really, you both know Sirius, right? Why would you even think that he pays attention to these things? Did you ever tell him about the colours, possibly when he didn't have anything else on his mind?" he asked, laughing.

He returned Remus' grin. "I don't have a problem knowing. Feel free to share in details this way we'll know just how many privacy spells we'll need to drown the moaning."

He looked at Remus innocently. "Oh, I don't know. Those aren't the balls I like to play with, and blue balls aren't what I'm after."

Maybe they would talk about it later, or maybe they wouldn't. Sirius wasn't particularly worried about it, they all had their secrets - especially then. And if Remus needed white trees and purple ornaments to actually see the colors well Sirius couldn't deny his friend that, even if Regulus would have allowed it.

He did have to laugh though when James seemed to pick up on all they were saying with the looks they'd been trading. "This is why I love you so much." He said grinning, from anyone else he likely would have hexed them for what James had said. He might share looks with Remus and even Regulus from time to time, but James understood him better than anyone else ever had.

"No, I don't think anyone needs details - there will be plenty of privacy charms and we'll all go to sleep happy tonight, and that's all anyone needs to know." Sirius cut in before Remus could actually respond to James suggestion that he share details.

"Oi!" Sirius protested brushing the flocking from his hair. "We're decorating the tree, not each other Moony." He warned his friend with a laugh. Where Sirius was more than happy never to hear any details about his brother's sex life, he didn't have the same issues with his own being mentioned and he chuckled when James teased Remus.

Remus shook his head as James came to Sirius' defence in their silent exchange. "Because he's annoyingly observant when he wants to be, like when you're trying to hide the fact you turn into a slavering monster once a month," he said with a laugh. "I've never underestimated your husband's ability to pick up on details when I least want him to, James. At fifteen, the fact I can't see half the visible colour spectrum would have been one of those details."

He opened his mouth to refuse details at the same Sirius forbade the sharing of them and ended up chuckling instead. "You heard the man, no details."

Not that he ever would have shared details in the first place. He wasn't likely to even joke beyond the subtle innuendos they'd already exchanged, which was something else he wouldn't have done a year ago. Still, he couldn't help choking a little when James kicked their teasing up a notch, leaving Remus without any sort of a retort he felt safe to utter.

Instead, he focused on sending two of the ornaments up near the top, but placing them low enough they wouldn't interfere with whatever topper they might have to place up there.

Regulus should have know that James would start something. It wasn't even a matter of houses anymore, but generation. James' generation seemed to have no limits and no sense propriety and James enjoyed pushing those limits even more.

"Do you know what I was wondering? Just how dirty and depraved the arguments between the Gryffindors and Slytherins have to be in this time," he said, shaking his head. They might have hated each other, but there were limits and barriers. "And I'm glad that the students were too terrified of me to actually hear them."

Regulus snorted. "No, Remus, you miss the point. Sirius notices what affects him or what he thinks affects him. You keeping a secret from him affects him. You not seeing some colours doesn't. I guess I should have thought of that."

"You love me because I'm gorgeous, smart, eloquent, understand you and give great head." James grinned, before closing his arms around Sirius' neck and kissing him. "I love you, too, and I promise never to let you guess anything." Sirius was the one person who got to hear all of his secrets without nagging or prodding.

He snorted. "You three are boring and prudes. I'm not sure you have any room to talk, though. We might have told someone that their mother gave great head, but at least we didn't want to kill each other. Sexual insults are not worse than murder."

Looking at Sirius he nodded toward the tree. "So should we help? We can stick to the gold, non girlish ones, because no matter what Remus says purple is too much like pink and we don't do blue balls."

"All many of the reasons I love you." Sirius agreed with a laugh. He didn't shy from kissing James - he didn't bother in public and he certainly would bother here in his home. He grinned at James' promise. "You're very sweet."

"Boring?" Sirius scoffed, shaking his head at his husband, before rolling his eyes at his brother, and sticking his tongue out at him. Perhaps there had been something off about Remus' sight when they were younger, but Sirius couldn't remember ever figuring out that it had anything to do with his ability, or inability for that matter, to see colors.

Sirius shrugged. "I suppose we should, or else Remus is going to have to do the whole thing on his own, since a certain brother of mine won't deign to do it." He chuckled.

Remus snorted softly. "I'm not missing the point. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. It's what I do."

Laughing he shook his head looping another set of ornaments through the air and settling them at random around the tree. "Trust me, there are a good many things the students did not want you to hear that you should be glad you did not." He shuddered, remember some of the things he'd overheard due to his hearing. "I should have failed them all on the werewolf unit as punishment for making me hear it."

Casting his best friend a teasing frown, Remus sent another tiny flurry of flocking at Sirius. "Leave your brother alone. He doesn't have to hang ornaments if he doesn't want to." Frown melting into a smirk, he added. "And I don't need help. I'm deigning to allow you to assist if you two can keep your hands off each other for more than ten seconds."

"I know I am," he answered when Sirius called him sweet. "But you get to taste me as a refresher if you want. Just trying to be helpful."

James grinned. "I'm sure I can tell you a few. I have tried to teach those Gryffindors everything I knew, keep the legacy going. After the Marauders, the Weasley twins, Harry Potter and his friends, and then me and my friends, we couldn't let it die out."

He loved to see Remus tease them. Of course it was a game that he could never win, because he was a prude, no matter what he said. "It's just our hands on our clothes. You should start worrying when I suggest a handjob." He stepped closer and kissed Sirius again, before pulling back. "All right, let's get this tree done, and then we can do... something else entirely."
