RP: Lighting Ceremony
Who: Stephen, Pansy, any and all wizards and witches. (add your tags)
Where: Nott Manor
When: December 8 (Post starts around 4 pm, right after sunset) {Pre-dated by 4 days}
Summary: The Nott family is hosting the annual Lighting Ceremony

For centuries, the Nott family had held Lighting Ceremony. It was the one time of the year when bloodlines and money didn't matter; everyone was the same. Even the house elves took part to the celebration and were treated as equal (not that Stephen liked to treat them as slaves the rest of the year), and the ceremony was open to everyone with magical ability. It was one tradition Stephen was quite pleased to uphold, even if it felt strange to do it without his father there.

In the morning, he and his mother had had breakfast together before helping the house elves with the decorations. He probably should have asked Andromeda, but this was family and Andromeda wouldn't be family for much longer. In fact, they barely spoke anymore. If he was truthful, he would have rather invited Azriel, but he didn't think either Azriel or his mother were ready for that, and today it was the Immaculate Conception, a day to honour Mary and mothers. Stephen would not upset his mother unduly.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. They had created special protections for the dragons to prevent idiots from sneaking into the reserve and getting eaten, although Stephen thought that if they were that stupid, they deserved what they got, but then it would spoil everyone else's Christmas and he couldn't allow that. There was Christmas music echoing through the land and tables set up with hot cider, tea, champagne and lots of food. Everything was self-services as even the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

At dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours, creating a winter wonderland that would last until the Epiphany. For Stephen, this represented a day of hope, the beginning of a new liturgical year and hopeful of a solar year without so much pin and suffering. Today, the Christmas season began.

Patrick chuckled. Scorpius might think that he was being sly, but he was just one of many to play that gay. Patrick has shagged too many not to know. "As long as you are having fun, that's all it matters."

He nodded. "Thank you, I really appreciate that. I might let you know, although things are much tighter now that I'm back at the Ministry. It's not like at the clinic where I could do whatever I wanted."

He patted Scorpius' arm. "Look, you are young, you did something stupid, lots of stupid from where I'm standing, the most important trying to become an Auror to make a point, but you've grown up, and now you can really do what you want, and you're still Scorpius Malfoy, that name opens up plenty of options. In a few years, no one is going to remember what you did, not even your parents."

"I am playing it smart. They want a golden son in public and while it affords me access to the funding I need, I can play the game. If that means I have to kiss arse to a certain degree, I can do that too. Even you told me once that I needed to play the game and to not throw away my name. It's about time I did that," he smiled. He had plans of his own now, and once he was done, he might not have to worry about any of it.

"You were damn good at what you were doing. I do hope it works out. How is life at the ministry? I can't say that I miss it." Trying to be an auror when it wasn't really what he wanted had been a bad idea. It took him time to realize how much he had actually disliked it.

He folded his arms, giving him that fake pout. "Sometimes now I don't know what I was thinking. I don't think I did as much damage as I thought. As soon as I stopped acting like a complete tosser, everything seemed to calm down."

"Can you still work on your research at the ministry?"

"I know, Scorpius. You aren't the first and you won't be the last. I'm not saying that you're doing anything wrong. In fact, I know you're doing the smart thing, I just wished that it didn't have to be this way and not just for you," he said, smiling.

"I'm still good at what I do," he said, grinning. "The Ministry is giving me the money needed to do my own experiments. We have the condition why suddenly people want to stop lycanthropy. Before too many people thought we had conquered it; now things are changing."

Patrick chuckled. "You did do a lot more damage than you thought, but it's all part of growing up. We all fuck up. The difference is that when most people do it, only their parents and a few relatives know. When you fuck up, everyone knows, which makes it difficult for your family to ignore. You had it tougher than most, but the fucking up-- that's just part of growing up."

"It's an unfortunate cost of this whole thing," he nodded. "I don't quite get what I want, but the end result is what is important. And what I do out of the public eye is entirely up to me and whoever wants to take me home." He was having more fun now, playing with who he wanted. Love didn't have to enter into the matter.

"So that means they are sponsoring your research. Have they given you any kind of time limits. I would think that making it manageable would be a good thing. Weren't there some who didn't want to stop their own condition?" He was thinking of Jazz, not really sure if he would step up to stop it. It seemed a part of who he was.

He shook his head and looked down. "I suppose I did, and I really didn't see myself going back, but there was an open door. It shocks me how easy it was in the end. I can fake being apologetic and I will be careful and watch my back. I nearly forgot what it was like to be a Slytherin." The smirk didn't fade. He was playing on his own agenda now,

"Just a friendly piece of advice that was given to me when I was your age," he said, thinking back to the many things that Marcus had told him. Marcus had been worried about safety, but it applied to being outed just as much. "Find your own place, even if it's a room in the Muggle world, somewhere you use just to bring people. You need a bedroom and a bathroom, a studio anywhere in the country. You bring them to your place, you make sure that there are spells to protect you, spells that make people forget what happened when they leave, or that they can talk about it. Maybe sure you do it on your terms and not go to their place when you don't know what will happen."

Patrick shrugged. "It's the experimental unit. I can work on it until some politician decides otherwise. It could happen tomorrow or in fifty years. That's just the way politics works." He nodded. "Remus did, but he's old school. I haven't heard about anyone else to be honest."

He chuckled. "You might not want to say all of that, because Slytherins don't make it obvious and most Slytherins would happily sell you out." He looked at the other man, smiling. "Whatever it is you're doing is doing you good. You look happy, so maybe this fake apology isn't that fake. You want to be with your family and you're willing to play by the rules. That's not fake, that's just what most purebloods from good families do."

"Getting a place would be pretty easy, especially now that I have the money, even if I 'technically' live at the manor." He rolled his eyes and laughed. "I did manage to get someone into my room at the manor. Everyone looked the other way, but I would rather have a place of my own, possibly near the pitch. It would be a good excuse."

"I doubt with the politicians now, they will tell you that you can't. Percy Weasley is in charge." The ministry might be not better with that, but he doubted it would get in the way of research. His grandmother had been in charge once, and she was good at what she had done.

His smirk was a bit impish. "I'm talking to you. I didn't sell you out, and I am fairly certain you wouldn't sell me out either. I am happier, but that isn't about the family. I will play by the rules and take the benefits. That's what most pureblood families do." Honestly, he wasn't letting the feelings get in the way. He would simply make sure his inheritance was secure.

"I didn't say move out of the manor. That makes it too obvious. I say keep a place that no one knows about in the Muggle world with spells that ensure that things stay secret," he said. "You never know when someone decide to talk otherwise."

Patrick shrugged. "Politicians are politicians. They have to balance need, money, public opinion. It's a lot of things, not just what they want."

He chuckled. "That would mean that there was a reason to sell me out, but I'm glad that you're happier." He didn't say anything about the family, because Patrick loved his parents. Even with all the arguments about Marcus, he hadn't stopped loving them and no amount of money could make up for not having his parents around. "And now I plan to get happier, or laid, with people that don't have your problems," he said, winking. "I'll see you later Scorpius.
