RP: Lighting Ceremony
Who: Stephen, Pansy, any and all wizards and witches. (add your tags)
Where: Nott Manor
When: December 8 (Post starts around 4 pm, right after sunset) {Pre-dated by 4 days}
Summary: The Nott family is hosting the annual Lighting Ceremony

For centuries, the Nott family had held Lighting Ceremony. It was the one time of the year when bloodlines and money didn't matter; everyone was the same. Even the house elves took part to the celebration and were treated as equal (not that Stephen liked to treat them as slaves the rest of the year), and the ceremony was open to everyone with magical ability. It was one tradition Stephen was quite pleased to uphold, even if it felt strange to do it without his father there.

In the morning, he and his mother had had breakfast together before helping the house elves with the decorations. He probably should have asked Andromeda, but this was family and Andromeda wouldn't be family for much longer. In fact, they barely spoke anymore. If he was truthful, he would have rather invited Azriel, but he didn't think either Azriel or his mother were ready for that, and today it was the Immaculate Conception, a day to honour Mary and mothers. Stephen would not upset his mother unduly.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. They had created special protections for the dragons to prevent idiots from sneaking into the reserve and getting eaten, although Stephen thought that if they were that stupid, they deserved what they got, but then it would spoil everyone else's Christmas and he couldn't allow that. There was Christmas music echoing through the land and tables set up with hot cider, tea, champagne and lots of food. Everything was self-services as even the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

At dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours, creating a winter wonderland that would last until the Epiphany. For Stephen, this represented a day of hope, the beginning of a new liturgical year and hopeful of a solar year without so much pin and suffering. Today, the Christmas season began.

Louis had gone to the lighting ceremony every year as a child until he'd started Hogwarts, and then last year he'd taken up the tradition again. It was strangely comforting to know that despite his brief time... out of commission... he hadn't missed another one.

Though his father was here, as well as a much of the rest of his family, he found himself after a time standing a bit away from the crowd simply to get some air. He toyed for a moment with the sleeve of his sweater, a rich blue that seemed to bring out his eyes, and warm besides.

The lights were beautiful.

Julius were moving around the crowd with ease, talking to as many people as possible. Partly this was because he actually enjoyed this day, the tradition, the snow and the lights. It was a tradition as old as any could remember, and one of the traditions he felt was important to hold onto.

Another reason to speak to as many people as possible was business. He needed the word out there that the shop had opened and was ready for business. That was the main reason why he ventured out to the young blond standing a bit away from the crowd. He had the body of a flyer, he noticed.

He also looked a bit lost, and to be honest, Julius had never been seen the reason to deny himself some fun. Not that he'd do anything in a place like this, but setting things up for future games could be rewarding, should the boy have interest in such directions.

He didn't walk straight up to the other man, but to the side, as if he was admiring the view, wrapped in his fur line cashmere coat with the cup of hot cider in his hand. "Oh hello," he said after a while, as if he'd just seen the young man. "You re admiring the view too, I see," he said, turning to face him, watching him. He looked familiar, but he could not place him, which meant he was definitely beneath him. Then again almost everyone was and it had never stopped him having fun. Why would it? He was Julius Rosier, he took what he wanted when he wanted.

"Have I seen you somewhere before?" he asked innocently. "Eros perhaps?"

Marlene loved this night. It was one of the few pureblood traditions that made her feel like being part of them as opposed to trying to hide her pedigree. It was a night where being a pureblood made you proud. She wondered how many Notts felt that way, and how much it was just something they did because they had to after all this time, but she was pretty sure that Stephen, at least, did it because he wanted to.

With this feeling of warmth and goodness (not that it stopped her from keeping an eye out on everything and making sure that security was at its best), she walked around the crowds.

For the occasion, she had worn a long dress with a matching red cloak lined in white fur. Her gloves, scarf and hat were also white with fur. She had even got matching boots, made for the snow, all white and fury. It kept her nice and warm even if her nose and cheeks must be as red as her clothes. When she saw a familiar red head, she walked closer and hooked her arm with his. "Hello, Mr. Head of the Reserve. How are you doing?"

There were some traditions that Charlie wished would be over and done with - especially this time of year, there were so many things people expected simply because it was the last month of the year and things like that just made Charlie glad that he didn't actually have to spend his time with the majority of those types of people. He had his reserve to escape to when he needed to.

The Lighting Ceremony though was something Charlie had always found himself enjoying. Oh he hadn't gone every year, staying in Romania over the holidays, but the times he had come he couldn't help enjoying himself.

Tonight was no different, things had gotten so much better in recent weeks, he'd stopped going into the Ministry every day, the world was an infinitely better place when most of his time was spent with dragons instead of people. Of course just as these thoughts were going through his mind Charlie found himself caught up by a very familiar woman all wrapped up against the cold.

"Very well, Ms. Head Auror." He assure her with a chuckle. "You look like you're planning on spending quite a bit of time out here." He grinned, and doubted Marlene was capable of ever looking anything but lovely even with all the layers. "How have you been?"

After leaving Charlie, Marlene resumed her random wanderings. This was just as beautiful as the lights. She got to see what everyone was doing, who was talking to whom. Some called it curiosity, other gossip, Callum would call it keeping an eye on things. No matter the name, people watching was wonderful.

Her smile got even bigger when she saw Margot. "Hello, love, how are you? Are you warn enough?" she asked, knowing that she was sounding like a mother hen. "Are you having fun? That's slightly more important as long as you aren't dying of frost bite," she said laughing.

Margot was pleased to have the night off so she could attend the lighting ceremony. Memories of attending the Lighting Ceremonies as children, not much had changed since the last one she attended. Hearing her sister's voice, she turned and smiled.

"Hi, Marly," she said before chuckling. "Yes, Mother. I am quite warm enough." A warming charm in addition to the four layers of clothing helped fight the extremely low temperature. "Yes, I'm having fun. Do I even need to ask if you are?"

Lenora hadn't known about this ceremony throughout her childhood years. She'd heard about it when she was at Hogwarts, and all the snobby students in Slytherins always talked about it like it was the best pureblood tradition. So after school, she'd always made a point to come.

It was beautiful, she wouldn't say otherwise, but she didn't see what was so strange about this. London was full of lights this time of the year, and most people could be nice an entire month and not one night out of the year. There were days, like this one, when she was reminded how snobbish and close minded wizards were. Her mother would scold her for that, telling her to fit in or she'd spent her life walking between two worlds and never fitting in.

It was hard to want to fit in after the past few months people had tried to kill them. Still, this was where the money was, so she'd put a smile and try.

He was still in a good mood after his run in with Louis, and the business part of the evening was so far going just as planned as well. That was when he spotted Leonora and a new smile spread on her face.

He hadn't seen her in a long time, but then he hadn't exactly been in the country either. He liked her type though, and the fact that she played Quidditch and was a model didn't hurt him. Being seen with her was (in spite of her lack of bloodlines) a good idea when it came to business. Not that he didn't intend to have fun talking to her too.

Picking up two glasses of champagne, he walked over with a grin on his face. "I see you escaped the clutches of war," he said lazily, handing one of the glasses to her. "Good for you."

"So how are you tonight?"

Lucy loved this ceremony. She had missed not coming while in Hogwarts, had almost owled her parents her first year begging them if she could go. She knew the answer would have been no though so she hadn't. Not wanting her parents think she wasn't grown up enough to be at Hogwarts.

She had wandered away from her parents and Molly, content to enjoy the lights and the season on her own for a little bit. Grateful for the warming charms on her cloak she pulled it closer around her. Being a large wizarding function, and her father's new role she had made sure she looked perfect.

Seeing a head of familiar blonde hair Lucy offered Baron a smile in greeting. "I guess they really do give days off at the new reserve don't they?" she teased him. "How are you Baron?"

"Miss Weasley," Baron said, inclining his head. He was glad to note that she was dressed more appropriately this time around. However, the use of his first name without permission was somewhat off-putting, if expected with this generation. "I've been well. And yourself?"

Christmas was magical.

It was a different sort of magic from what she herself could wield, but it was magic all the same. There was something about the lights and the snow, the general atmosphere of the world, that seemed to remind one of hope and joy. Cassandra was not religious, not even really what some might call spiritual. But, she believed in miracles.

Even if she had no intentions of ever just waiting around for one to find her.

This, the winter scene lit by twinkling lights, music on the crisp air, this was a tiny piece of miraculous. Walking arm in arm with her father, it had been almost like being a kid again. She'd even left her hair down to fall in loose curls, free of the usual confines she forced it into while working. Her sapphire velvet cloak was spelled to keep her warm, but that didn't prevent her from accepting the hot cider when her father got one for each of them.

By the time he left her on her own as he moved to speak with some old friends, she was rosy cheeked and smiling, happy to walk alone, speaking to friends as they passed. The only thing that would have made it a more perfect moment was if she could have been astride Croi Dhu, riding through the trees.

Large crowds of happy, celebrating people did not usually equal joyous times in Alastor's mind. They equaled security risks and potential trouble. In the past, he'd only bothered to attend events like the Lighting Ceremony when required to...as security. He hadn't even bothered the previous year, not until one Tom Riddle had shown up and the entire Division had been called in.

Officially of course, it looked good for department heads to be in attendance. Unofficially, there was his working relationship with Stephen to consider and the fact he could be on hand as unofficial security. Just in case.

But, the truth was, Alastor had actually wanted to come this evening.

It was Christmas.

Not given to being overly loquacious, Alastor most people never knew the depth of the thoughts in his head beyond strategy and security, history and battle tactics. Their parents had seen to it both boys were raised with faith and over the last few months, Alastor had found himself reaching for that silently to get him through. It seemed fitting to say thank you by enjoying this Christmas season to it's fullest, appreciating the simple fact they were able to celebrate in freedom this year, and acknowledging the higher power that had seen them through the hardships to this new beginning.

Marlene left Margot and walked around some more. This really made her feel better. The way her cloak was spelled to moved as she did, trailing behind her, red and white blending perfectly with the Christmas spirit. It wasn't even that she was dressed well, because that happened every day, but that it all matched so well, making her feel the spirit of the season even more. To many, it might sound absurd, but it made sense to her.

Feeling happy despite the little trip down memory lane, she was happy to find Alastor who looked just as happy. "Knut for your thoughts, love," she said, putting her arm around him. "You look strangely at peace considering how exposed we are."

Edward

Pretty lights and laughing people were not high on Edward's list of things to do that evening. But, if he expected to get back into business, he needed to get a lay of the world and these events were always invaluable for cluing a person in to who was who and where the money was likely to come from. He could hardly live on the substantial money his previous life had left behind forever. Not in the manner he'd become accustomed to, at least.

Of course, his disdain for happy celebrations was hidden behind a slight smirk and existed solely on an interpersonal level. On an intellectual level, he found traditions such as this fascinating to examine from an archaeological and anthropological perspective. That was one thing facing the reality of his own death and rebirth had done for him. It had given him an even greater appreciation for the aspects of society one saw in the traditions that lasted through time.

This ceremony was centuries old. The mythology it celebrated was more than two thousand years old. The lights were symbolic. The trees were as well. Many of the traditional foods of the season had their own significance and history.

Some things had changed, adapted over time. But, their origins were carefully hidden in the details if one took the time to look.

Not, he mused as he wandered through the crowd with a glass of champagne held absently in one hand, that many people present would actually understand any of that history. Even amoung the 'pure', tradition and history only went so far as their own lines and values, rarely delving into the greater mysteries of mankind.

But, at least they had pretty lights.

So very little had actually changed in the time that had passed from where she had left to this point that Hestia almost wouldn't have noticed if the people around her hadn't all went and aged twenty years on her. She had always liked this time of year, the cold weather, the hot cider, the lights. And all of that came together during the lighting ceremony. It was as lovely as ever and she was glad that this tradition had not changed.

Bundled up against the cold, Hestia made her way through the groups of people gathered here and there, occasionally saying hello to some that she knew, though for the most part she simply wanted to see who had come out for the night's festivities, perhaps see if there were anymore familiar but aged faces.

Her talk with Bill the week earlier had been something of a turning point for Hestia, she had never been the shy retiring type - in fact she had often loved social interaction, but with all the changes she had been dealing with she had somehow lost that part of herself. Though perhaps tonight might be a chance to ... well not fix it, but start getting back to her old self.

"Hello," She said finally finding someone else on his own rather than joining a group all ready in the middle of a conversation. He didn't look particularly familiar, but that wasn't all together surprising all things considered. "You look like you could use a bit of company, or are you the sort who prefers to stand on his own at these sorts of things and look down his nose at everyone else?" She wondered with a small smirk.

"Muggle cinema?" Hestia asked amused, oh she knew about the muggle cinema - understood the concept of it all, but Edward did not strike her as the sort who would actually let himself be caught in such a place, let alone admit to enjoying a character from it. But then he hadn't seemed like the sort to enjoy playing in the dirt either. It seemed he was quite a man of contradictions.

"I'll admit spending my day playing in the dirt is not my idea of a good time, but I can certainly see where the history that you explore could be quite interesting." Particularly if suddenly found out there was entire world's history you knew nothing about after years, Hestia had grown tired of history before she ever was introduced to the subject at Hogwarts thanks in large part to her tutors.

She shrugged. "My father as well, actually. Well he used his own influence to get me into the department I wanted, but I've always wanted to be a part of something larger than myself." She could be a bit of an idealist occasionally, especially when it came to the Ministry. She was well aware of it's many problems, but she felt it had always had the ability to make things better when the right sort of people were working there.

Remus
[info]galarusblaidd
2010-12-07 12:04 am UTC (link)
'It is required of every man,' the ghost returned, 'that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow-men, and travel far and wide; and, if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death.'

The line from Dickens' famous Christmas tale had been coming back to Remus more and more as the holidays neared. It seemed appropriate for him. He'd spent so much of his life trying to stay as close to the fringes and edges of the world as possible. From all he could tell, he'd lived and died that way the first time around. So, perhaps, this was his condemnation in death, to repeat life and change that disconnection from the world.

He certainly didn't feel disconnected any longer, as he walked through the trees and had to stop several times to exchange smiles and good wishes with those he knew. For all he hadn't totally given up his introverted ways, somehow he had managed to collect quit a number of friends and loved ones over the last year.

Of course, thinking of the last year reminded him of last year's ceremony and Lily Luna. They'd teased each other about snowball fights and grown-up talk just under that tree there. He'd been hiding. She'd never let him hide, finding him with a smile. There was still a hole there, where Lily and Harry had been.

Still, Remus himself was no longer hiding. He was not standing under a tree somewhere, hating the necessity of dressing up or being around people. While he might still prefer his denims and shirts sometimes, it seemed fitting for this new life that he looked different, an outward sign of the inner changes going on in his head.

Not that he could keep thinking such dark thoughts for too long. There was snow and lights and hot cider and festive music. More importantly, there was life and love and all those soppy, clichéd things he got to indulge in during the holidays because if you couldn't be soppy during Christmas, things were truly dire beyond dire.

Maybe he should scout out the trees to see if a helpful elf might have included some mistletoe somewhere he could drag a particular someone off to later for a private moment or two in the snow.

Remus smiled at the thought.

Bill had attended this as a child with his parents, then with his wife after his return to England. This year neither were here, and it was strange to be here alone. Stranger still to know that this was where Lily had fallen pray to Voldemort last year.

Bill was however determined to put those thoughts behind him and move on, and with a cup of hot cider in his hand and a thick wool cloak wrapped around him, he moved around the crowd and spoke both to people he knew and hadn't ever met before. It was amazing how many people who had never looked twice at you wanted to talk to you when you were the head of a department.

Not that he minded, he'd always liked speaking to people, even when he didn't realise it. However, spotting Remus brought another kind of smile to his face, and he strode over with a smile. They spoke too seldom, both being busy with their own lives, but that didn't mean Bill didn't value the growing friendship with the man, and intended to expand it further.

"Hello, Remus," he said as he approached. "That's a nice smile to see."

Wandering near a table with drinks Craig picked up a cup of hot cider, sipping at it slowly as he began wandering around again, admiring the lights as he looked for a familiar face.

As much as he loved this ceremony he did prefer enjoying it with someone he knew, and so far he hadn't seen his friends. He was smiling though, knowing he'd see someone he knew soon.

The Notts had outdone themselves again this year, and Craig knew they all had plenty to be thankful for. Finally seeing someone he knew Craig smiled, "Hello," he told them. "Enjoying yourself?"

It was freezing, but Dom likes that it made things less intense on her senses - probably because she was getting frostbite or something terrible like that, but she'd live. She had always liked the lighting ceremony - it was gorgeous and it was fun seeing her friends gathered together enjoying themselves.

She was glad for this time of year with so many happy celebrations, she thought it was just what they needed after the summer they'd had. And things were no where near perfect, but maybe they were getting better.

"Oh Craig." She smiled, Dylan had run off to talk with a friend so she had found herself on her own for a bit, and was happy for the company she'd gotten in Craig. "I am, and you? Frozen solid yet?"

Remus/Regulus
[info]galarusblaidd
2010-12-08 04:09 am UTC (link)
After leaving Bill, Remus wandered through amoung the trees on his own for a little bit longer before catching a familiar scent in the crowd, one that had been on his mind just before his friend had approached him. Turning his head he spotted the face that went with that scent and made his way through the few people between him and his destination. He had to stop for a moment to right an overly enthusiastic little girl who fell over when she ran into his leg while playing amoung the guests. But, after quickly reassuring her mother it was no bother and waving at the little girl with an admonishment to be careful, it took only a moment before he was stepping up to his lover's side.

"Apparently this is going to become a habit, setting children back on their feet when I go out with you at Christmas time," he teased, remembering the little boy in the sweetshop when they'd been shopping for Sirius the year before. "I had been thinking up mischief to drag you into just a few minutes ago. But, it seems there's no mistletoe to be had anywhere here."

Regulus was used to looking around and making sure that he saw everyone important, which meant he saw Remus come his way and the little delay. He watched amused as Remus dealt with the child, but when his lover came closer, he simply raised an eyebrow showing nothing.

"You don't have to. You can always hex them and their parents, and tell them that they should put a leash on the brats if they can't teach them basic rules like not running into people unless you want to be hexed," he answered. "After one simple hex, they will stop. It works with all purebloods."

His eyebrow went even higher as Remus continued. "You would like to take me somewhere so you can kiss me while everyone in the wizarding world is here. Are you sure that you haven't lost your senses?"

Marcus remembered the lighting ceremony, a tradition for years. He was glad to have that memory as he seemed to be missing too many others. He took a drink an a biscuit from the table and walked through the crowd. It still amused him that most people looked so old. He wondered what had become of most of his old friends. Even with Patrick, he was still a little out of place. At least he had quidditch, and he would be a legend when it came to quidditch. He also had a club that was successful. He really couldn't complain.

He had to admit that he was a little bored. Sure, everyone was invited, but it was also a society function. He needed something to keep him occupied, or get him into trouble. He smirked a little, deciding to find something who would do just that.

Scorpius looked around he wandered through the grounds. He was thinking of the year before when he had been sick, or maybe he was over it by then. That had been the worst time, and now a year later, he was no longer an auror and playing quidditch. He was also back with his family. Sure, there was tension and they really didn't talk to each other, but secrets had to be kept. There were a few things on his mind regarding family obligations, perhaps it was time to explore options.

He took a drink from the tray that came by, noting the usual crowd. He was amazed at how little had seemed to change and how life went on. He was a bit lost in his own head when he nearly bumped into someone.

Dylan and Lenora
[info]bd_dylan_v
2010-12-09 08:53 pm UTC (link)
Last year he'd been here, he'd almost ended up in bed with Patrick, but stood him up to chase after Riddle with Jamie. It was strange when he thought about it like that, walking around in a setting that looked almost identical, but in a situation so vastly different.

His father wasn't here this year, which was a first. He'd be off flirting with someone or another by now and he would at once think it was embarrassing that he'd never stop and be slightly impressed that he could still have almost anyone he wanted as his age. He'd used to think he'd end up the same way, but here he was, in a relationship. It was so different from what he'd expected, and he actually missed having Cass around. Now wasn't that a strange thing in itself?

In spite of his thoughts, he was having a good time. He'd spoken friends he hadn't seen since the war started, and some he saw more often, so by the time he came across a very familiar face he was smiling brightly. He didn't even hesitate to say hi, even if she'd have no clue who he was. "Hi," he said, sounding as if he'd known her forever. "Sorry, you don't know me," he added sheepishly. "Dylan Vaisey," he said extending his hand. "I was glad to hear you returned to the game." He'd always enjoyed watching or hearing the Magpies play, they had a style he quite enjoyed.
