RP: Lighting Ceremony
Who: Stephen, Pansy, any and all wizards and witches. (add your tags)
Where: Nott Manor
When: December 8 (Post starts around 4 pm, right after sunset) {Pre-dated by 4 days}
Summary: The Nott family is hosting the annual Lighting Ceremony

For centuries, the Nott family had held Lighting Ceremony. It was the one time of the year when bloodlines and money didn't matter; everyone was the same. Even the house elves took part to the celebration and were treated as equal (not that Stephen liked to treat them as slaves the rest of the year), and the ceremony was open to everyone with magical ability. It was one tradition Stephen was quite pleased to uphold, even if it felt strange to do it without his father there.

In the morning, he and his mother had had breakfast together before helping the house elves with the decorations. He probably should have asked Andromeda, but this was family and Andromeda wouldn't be family for much longer. In fact, they barely spoke anymore. If he was truthful, he would have rather invited Azriel, but he didn't think either Azriel or his mother were ready for that, and today it was the Immaculate Conception, a day to honour Mary and mothers. Stephen would not upset his mother unduly.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. They had created special protections for the dragons to prevent idiots from sneaking into the reserve and getting eaten, although Stephen thought that if they were that stupid, they deserved what they got, but then it would spoil everyone else's Christmas and he couldn't allow that. There was Christmas music echoing through the land and tables set up with hot cider, tea, champagne and lots of food. Everything was self-services as even the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

At dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours, creating a winter wonderland that would last until the Epiphany. For Stephen, this represented a day of hope, the beginning of a new liturgical year and hopeful of a solar year without so much pin and suffering. Today, the Christmas season began.

"I gather your father was a Slytherin, and you ended up in Gryffindor. Isn't that some kind of cosmic impossibility? Like Lex Luthor being friends with Superman, or something?" She chuckled. "You keep hoping, and I'll keep winning. I won't mind."

She nodded. "Well, that must be true or you'd have quit too, although mere mortals don't get promoted to Secretary of State at his age." God, the wizarding world really was fucked up.

Lenora raised her eyebrows. "Where did you leave? Oh wait, the wizarding world. I grew up in the land of X Factor, everyone wanted to be a film star, or a TV star. Why? What did you want to do?"

"Father, grandfather, great-whatever," he chuckled. "I'm the first Vaisey ever to be anything but Slytherin," he said, not without pride. He quite liked it, especially with what they'd done to Cass and his parents. Not that the rest of the family ever acknowledged that he was alive, but he really couldn't care less. "So yeah, a bit of an impossibility," he said, and he had to admire a witch who would pull out so many Muggle references in a conversation with a Wizard.

When it came to Jamie, he smiled, because while he knew what she meant, it was Jamie. He'd seen how hard he'd worked, how tired he'd been, how much he'd kept on smiling. He'd been the one working day and night even before Hogwarts. He'd trained and worked so hard he could barely see straight, he'd not had time for his friends, or for anything but training. He'd faced a curse that almost killed them, watched his parents, his grandparents, his sister, his niece, uncles and cousins die. Through it all he'd kept working. None of that were things he'd say though. All of that felt private. Instead he smiled. "He might be young, but he earned it, and I'm not just saying that as his mate. Not that you have to believe me," he added with a grin. "In fact I'd almost be surprised if you did." Not when he wasn't willing to explain.

A loud laugh left him when she assumed he grew up in the Wizarding world, because to him it was so absurd. "Not in jail or dead by twenty?" he suggested. "At that age, I can't say I aimed very high. Usually I settled for mum's new boyfriend not using us as punching bags this month."

"I didn't grow up in this world, no matter what the name suggests. I wasn't even a Vaisey back then. I was as far from the Wizarding world as, well as you was. I had no clue I was a wizard until I got my letter to Hogwarts and mum dumped me on my unsuspecting father because she didn't want a freak in the family."

"How vary scandalous! I'm sure you have enough relatives rolling in their graves. I should get a bit more upset since you seem so proud of being a Gryffindor, but anything that fucks with traditions is something I like," she said, belatedly thinking that 'fuck' was not a term polite Slytherin women used, but the, she was a player not a society woman. "I like impossibilities, too." She looked him over with a smile. "I might even like the person causing them if he's not too attached to the girlfriend."

Lenora snorted. "Since when earning it means anything in politics? You know what anywhere else, he'd have no chance in hell to get so high up in the government. It's just that the wizarding world is less than rational when it comes to the Potters, whether they have earned it or not."

She studied him even more carefully now. "That's hardly what people who come from long lines of Slytherins worry about." The punching comment had her stiffen for a moment. "And your mother had boyfriends, while your father said nothing?" This was when she wished that she paid more attention to these purebloods and their sordid affairs, but she still couldn't give a fuck past the information needed at the moment.

"We do have something in common, then. I didn't know my father was a wizard either, or me for that matter, and when I got my letter, my mum had no father to turn to." She was very proud of her mother. "She learnt what she could and put me through Hogwarts and getting out of the council estate, bit violent there, yeah? Mum didn't like some of my mates there, so she was pleased, told everyone I had gotten a scholarship to a posh public school. Everyone was right envious."

"I'm sure," he laughed. "Even more so because I'm a halfblood, they don't like their family tree being tainted," he grinned, and he knew it was likely not a good topic of conversation to have without a privacy spell - in case one of them happened to hear - but he couldn't care less. He wasn't his father, he didn't have the same worries that he had.

If his smiled widened when she flirted, it was not really his intention, and he knew the right answer to the question was that he was very attached to his girlfriend. Which he was, but he was also a man, and it was impossible not to react when someone like Lenora Walker flirted with you. She was bleeding gorgeous after all! Besides, there was no harm done, it was just a bit of harmless flirting.

"A tempting statement," he said, his voice slightly changed. "But I am, attached that is," he said. "I should have met you a year ago."

He shrugged at the statement about Jamie, really not wanting to talk about him right now. Instead he smiled when she went on.

"No they would normally have other worries," he laughed. "But, then I'm not at all typical, am I?" he asked. When she talked he smiled, amused by the slip of the accent, and impressed with the story. "Your mum sounds like the mum I wished I had when I was younger," he said with a grin. "How do you know your father was a wizard?" he asked, curious. "Is it an assumption?"

"You and every illegitimate child," she said under her breath. Purebloods kept their lines pure by not recognising their not so pure children, but they shagged around like everything was owned to them.

"But a year ago, we were still growing up. Bodies like your need a few years to mature," she teased. "If you ever get bored of your girlfriend, you can always come and find me though. After all, things might change again in a week."

She shrugged. "Neither am I. I grew up with a Muggle mother and ended up in Slytherin. That alone should be proof, but he told her. They were drunk or high--" Lenora didn't know for sure. She doubted her mum remembered for sure. "She thought he was high, paid no mind to that nonsense. Until I got my letter. Never did look for him after that. It didn't seem important."

Laughing Dylan nodded. "True, though most illegitimate children don't walk around using their posh names," he said with a grin. They might have disowned Cass, but he'd been a Vaisey since birth and they couldn't take that away from him, or stop him giving the name to his son.

Had he been more modest, he would have flushed at the comment. As he was not, he just grinned a bit wider, knowing there was more than some truth to it. He certainly had added a few muscles during the last year if nothing else. "If things were to change, I'll be sure to keep that in mind," he answered. He felt certain things wouldn't change, but that didn't mean he couldn't flirt a bit. It was innocent, right? He wasn't promising her anything.

"He told her?" Dylan asked incredulously. "He met a Muggle woman and he told her he was a wizard? He must have been high," he laughed. He nodded when she said she hadn't looked for him. "Yeah, I can see why," he said. "It's not like he was ever your dad, is it?"

"Don't I know it," she said, laughing. "I don't know. I'm not sure I'd want to use my father's name. I don't know the bloke. My mum is the one that raised me."

She smiled at him. "I think I can wait even more than a week. You know in case things change." Still she made no overt sign. Free men were fair game, but she had no interest in going after someone else's boyfriend. If they came on to her, then it was a different story.

Lenora shrugged. "He did, and I gather that sobriety wasn't an issue for either one of them, so mum never took his seriously, and now, it's irrelevant. Considering what happened, he's probably some low life who'd try to get my money. I don't need that bull."
