RP: Lighting Ceremony
Who: Stephen, Pansy, any and all wizards and witches. (add your tags)
Where: Nott Manor
When: December 8 (Post starts around 4 pm, right after sunset) {Pre-dated by 4 days}
Summary: The Nott family is hosting the annual Lighting Ceremony

For centuries, the Nott family had held Lighting Ceremony. It was the one time of the year when bloodlines and money didn't matter; everyone was the same. Even the house elves took part to the celebration and were treated as equal (not that Stephen liked to treat them as slaves the rest of the year), and the ceremony was open to everyone with magical ability. It was one tradition Stephen was quite pleased to uphold, even if it felt strange to do it without his father there.

In the morning, he and his mother had had breakfast together before helping the house elves with the decorations. He probably should have asked Andromeda, but this was family and Andromeda wouldn't be family for much longer. In fact, they barely spoke anymore. If he was truthful, he would have rather invited Azriel, but he didn't think either Azriel or his mother were ready for that, and today it was the Immaculate Conception, a day to honour Mary and mothers. Stephen would not upset his mother unduly.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. They had created special protections for the dragons to prevent idiots from sneaking into the reserve and getting eaten, although Stephen thought that if they were that stupid, they deserved what they got, but then it would spoil everyone else's Christmas and he couldn't allow that. There was Christmas music echoing through the land and tables set up with hot cider, tea, champagne and lots of food. Everything was self-services as even the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

At dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours, creating a winter wonderland that would last until the Epiphany. For Stephen, this represented a day of hope, the beginning of a new liturgical year and hopeful of a solar year without so much pin and suffering. Today, the Christmas season began.

"Well, we both know that I've always loved you for your sunny personality," she answered back, grinning. "That and your body. Brains are so overrated, anyway. I haven't got a single brain cell, couldn't possibly with the heels I wear."

She turned around so she could put both arms around him. "You're sounding very philosophical there." People might not see this side of Alastor, but she'd seen it through the years, even if not often. "You're sounding a lot better than when I arrived," she added softly. "You sounded like you didn't care if you lived or died; that scared me. This is nice, although as the Head of the MLE, you get not to think about security. I'm the one left with the job," she said, laughing. "We got everything covered, though. Stephen was very nice to let us come in and put spells around the grounds after what happened last year."

Marlene nodded. "Yes, I am. I had a chance to talk to Charlie, who's totally smitten with your brother, by the way, and to my sister. We were thinking of having a decorating party. People have to bring ornaments and we get to decorate the house."

That earned her a full-blown belly laugh. Alastor Moody and sunny disposition were not generally included in the same sentence unless it was a list of unpossessed traits. "It's the lack of oxygen. Heels that high," he teased with a wink, "your head's practically in the stratosphere."

He smiled -- a small one, but a smile instead of the usual smirk that sufficed as one. "I was in a very dark place then. Had been for some time." He couldn't see it then, but now he could admit, at least to himself, he hadn't really cared if he'd lived or died then. It had been years since he'd even set foot in a church, though he was thinking he might attend Christmas services this year. His faith in a lot of things had been shaken with the first war. When she went on, he chuckled again. "And just who do you think the higher ups are going to yell at if the security is faulty? I trust you to have it covered, though. Stephen's too smart not to let you do your job."

Mention of his brother and Charlie had the smirk reappearing. "Doorknob had better be smitten after all this." Alastor liked Charlie. He did. But, he still marvelled there was anyone worse at these things than Alastor himself. He raised an eyebrow at the idea of a decorating party, however. "Which people are you two inflicting upon us?"

Alastor was under no illusions there was a choice if both the sisters wanted something.

"Yes, it must be. I can't possibly get enough air." She raised her leg, showing off the very flat, furry boots she was wearing today. "See, no heels today. It must be why I can think again."

Marlene nodded. "I know. I could see it, love, and then what everyone else was telling me about Mad-Eye Moody. The fact that I understood didn't mean that it scared me less, but more." She brushed his cheek gently. "I'm glad that you are feeling better. As for security, there won't be any yelling. I can be paranoid for the two of us and you can enjoy the night."

She looked at him with a curious expression on her face. "Doorknock? He wasn't that bad, was he? seriously he's a Weasley, don't they breathe relationship? How much can he have fucked up?" She shrugged off the other question. "Work, Order, people who are scared of you, so we'll be fine."

"Sensible shoes? Are you sure you're feeling well, Marly-girl?" Alastor grinned, kissing her soundly before he could be smacked for the cheek.

That kiss was followed by a second, gentle one, as he raised one hand to trail fingertips softly down her cheek. "I'm sorry I scared you," he said quietly, when he pulled back. He didn't like to think too long on the fact it was only her return and the subsequent fear of losing everything all over again that had finally woken him up to how far down that path of insanity he'd gone without even realising it. When she'd been so sick...and then the war and watching her sleep in the infirmary...Alastor didn't think he could go through even almost losing her one more time and hold on to that fragile hope he was beginning to find again. Not unless there truly was a higher power out there for him to lean on. "I may be happy, but I'm still paranoid, love."

The endearment was out of his mouth before he was even conscious of thinking it. "God, you're starting to rub off on me," he laughed, shaking his head. "And, yes, he was really that bad. He makes me look suave and charming. if you don't believe me, I'll get a pensieve and you can listen for yourself.

"Well, as long as there are a few I can scare."

"It's bloody cold," she said, laughing and kissing him back.

Marlene leaned against Alastor, her hands going under his cloak, refusing to let him go too far. "Don't apologise, baby. It wasn't something that you could control. I just got angry with everyone else for letting you get to that point. You always were too dangerous when let inside your head for too long, dangerous to yourself, and those bloody idiots were all too afraid of you to tell you to stop. I still don't get why, but alas, I'll just have to accept that they are." She smiled at him. "You get to be less paranoid than normal."

She didn't even have to fake the giggles that came out when he realised what he said. "You're smiling, using the word 'love', next thing you'll care about clothes," she said, chuckling.

Marlene snorted. "Of course I believe you, it's just... you aren't exactly the most eloquent person and if you think it was bad, it must have been horrible. Good thing that they are both men and dicks talk or they'd never got back together."

She kissed his again. "Plenty of people to scare, I promise."

Alastor hugged her close as she leaned into him further. "Who was going to stop me?" he asked curiously. "The two people most capable of getting me to step back and see what was happening were both gone." And if they'd still been there, it wouldn't have been an issue. "There's no one to be angry with over it but the man we put back in the grave a month and a half ago.

"And you just let them be scared," he chuckled. "You'll be the death of my reputation otherwise, all this smiling and 'love' stuff. It's entirely your fault I'm going soft."

Laughing, he nodded. "Not exactly the most eloquent is an understatement. I'll hold you to that promise. You know my life isn't complete without people to scare." The smirk was back as he gestured toward a small clearing where a few brave souls had taken it upon themselves to improvise a dance floor. "How scared do you think they'd be if the Head of the MLE dragged his Head Auror over to join those revelers,hm?"

"I don't know. Dumbledore? Kings? Emm? I can think of plenty of people who could have smacked you upside the head," she said. "Anyone from the Order? It doesn't really matter."

Marlene chuckled. "All right. I guess that can be my Christmas present to you. I'll let them think that you're horrible and mean." She nipped his lip, smiling. "I'll happily take the blame for that."

She nodded. "I always keep my promises." She turned her head to look at the newly made dance floor. "Terrified, I'm sure, but we always have a dance together. We can't let a few terrified people stop traditions."
