Summary: The Nott family is hosting the annual Lighting Ceremony

For centuries, the Nott family had held Lighting Ceremony. It was the one time of the year when bloodlines and money didn't matter; everyone was the same. Even the house elves took part to the celebration and were treated as equal (not that Stephen liked to treat them as slaves the rest of the year), and the ceremony was open to everyone with magical ability. It was one tradition Stephen was quite pleased to uphold, even if it felt strange to do it without his father there.

In the morning, he and his mother had had breakfast together before helping the house elves with the decorations. He probably should have asked Andromeda, but this was family and Andromeda wouldn't be family for much longer. In fact, they barely spoke anymore. If he was truthful, he would have rather invited Azriel, but he didn't think either Azriel or his mother were ready for that, and today it was the Immaculate Conception, a day to honour Mary and mothers. Stephen would not upset his mother unduly.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. They had created special protections for the dragons to prevent idiots from sneaking into the reserve and getting eaten, although Stephen thought that if they were that stupid, they deserved what they got, but then it would spoil everyone else's Christmas and he couldn't allow that. There was Christmas music echoing through the land and tables set up with hot cider, tea, champagne and lots of food. Everything was self-services as even the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

At dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours, creating a winter wonderland that would last until the Epiphany. For Stephen, this represented a day of hope, the beginning of a new liturgical year and hopeful of a solar year without so much pin and suffering. Today, the Christmas season began.

"Oh, that I know," Remus laughed. "It's impossible not to know Ginny is on the Harpies when you live with both her and her son. Of course, Holyhead and Caerphilly were Tad's teams when I was a boy. But, I suppose I can keep an eye on Puddlemere as well."

Following Bill's glance, Remus nodded in sympathy with Dominique's fears. He could well imagine those thoughts, having given up without trying on a number of things himself for the same reason. Of course, the werewolves of this time weren't quite the same themselves. "No, it wasn't long ago at all. I'm glad, for her sake, that seems to have changed."

Remus shrugged. "A little of both, maybe. I've never felt settled in my own skin before." Laughing, he shook his head. "You know, a year ago, I might have been interested, actually. But, now I'll just have to look for a less obvious solution. I like being able to dictate my own work too much."

Bill laughed. "I thought as much," he said. "Ginny never was one for subtlety." The words were said with a laugh, but also with warmth. Bill had always had a special relationship with his sister. Partly because she was a girl and youngest, partly because she was who she was.

"You'd better," he teased. "I might take offence if you don't." He laughed, though it turned to a smile when Remus went on. "Me too," he said. "Our world is far from perfect, but at least it's once more heading in the right direction." He really hoped the changes would lead to more changes in that direction, and possibly, just maybe, he'd be a part of that.

"I can understand what that's like," he said. "To a degree. I wasn't very comfortable with the changes in me after Greyback's attack. I don't think anyone can understand fully what it's like to live like that always though, not unless you are. Still, I'm glad you feel 'settled in your skin' now though."

He chuckled. "My loss I suppose, but I can definitely see why that kind of independence would have an appeal."

"Well, now, I wouldn't want to cause offence. So, I guess I'd better." Shoulders shaking with suppressed mirth, Remus finished his cider before nodding in agreement with Bill's statement. He had his own fears for the future in light of what Regulus had told him of Patrick's research. But, those could wait for another time. "Only time will tell if it stays that course, I suppose."

Bill did understand some of it, Remus was sure. But, it was more than just accepting a few differences. He'd never really allowed himself to be Remus before. Man, werewolf, fighter, scholar, kind, sarcastic, all the little pieces of himself that he'd carefully settled into the proper masks to suit those around him were finally settling into one whole person. "I don't think anyone can fully understand what it's like to live like any other person, lycanthropy or no. To borrow a seasonal metaphor, people are like snowflakes, no two exactly the same.

"But, there is a man over there who seems like he wants to come and speak with you and he doesn't seem eager to interrupt. So, I'll let you go and we can meet up for lunch again sometime soon. You can try to convince me to work for the Ministry and I'll pry into your top secret work, then," Remus added with a laugh before leaving his friend to whatever conversation was waiting for him.
