When: December 8 (Post starts around 4 pm, right after sunset) {Pre-dated by 4 days}
Summary: The Nott family is hosting the annual Lighting Ceremony

For centuries, the Nott family had held Lighting Ceremony. It was the one time of the year when bloodlines and money didn't matter; everyone was the same. Even the house elves took part to the celebration and were treated as equal (not that Stephen liked to treat them as slaves the rest of the year), and the ceremony was open to everyone with magical ability. It was one tradition Stephen was quite pleased to uphold, even if it felt strange to do it without his father there.

In the morning, he and his mother had had breakfast together before helping the house elves with the decorations. He probably should have asked Andromeda, but this was family and Andromeda wouldn't be family for much longer. In fact, they barely spoke anymore. If he was truthful, he would have rather invited Azriel, but he didn't think either Azriel or his mother were ready for that, and today it was the Immaculate Conception, a day to honour Mary and mothers. Stephen would not upset his mother unduly.

In the afternoon, they had gone to the chapel for the Mass, before heading off to where the party would be. They had set up, as usual, right in the middle of the park, the only flat land with a perfect view of all the trees. They had created special protections for the dragons to prevent idiots from sneaking into the reserve and getting eaten, although Stephen thought that if they were that stupid, they deserved what they got, but then it would spoil everyone else's Christmas and he couldn't allow that. There was Christmas music echoing through the land and tables set up with hot cider, tea, champagne and lots of food. Everything was self-services as even the house elves had a day off and their own private party from where they could see the lightening of the trees.

At dusk, father Luke said the blessing, and finally when the sun went down, the lights came alive. Every tree in the land lit up creating an amazing game of colours, creating a winter wonderland that would last until the Epiphany. For Stephen, this represented a day of hope, the beginning of a new liturgical year and hopeful of a solar year without so much pin and suffering. Today, the Christmas season began.

Marlene loved this night. It was one of the few pureblood traditions that made her feel like being part of them as opposed to trying to hide her pedigree. It was a night where being a pureblood made you proud. She wondered how many Notts felt that way, and how much it was just something they did because they had to after all this time, but she was pretty sure that Stephen, at least, did it because he wanted to.

With this feeling of warmth and goodness (not that it stopped her from keeping an eye out on everything and making sure that security was at its best), she walked around the crowds.

For the occasion, she had worn a long dress with a matching red cloak lined in white fur. Her gloves, scarf and hat were also white with fur. She had even got matching boots, made for the snow, all white and fury. It kept her nice and warm even if her nose and cheeks must be as red as her clothes. When she saw a familiar red head, she walked closer and hooked her arm with his. "Hello, Mr. Head of the Reserve. How are you doing?"

There were some traditions that Charlie wished would be over and done with - especially this time of year, there were so many things people expected simply because it was the last month of the year and things like that just made Charlie glad that he didn't actually have to spend his time with the majority of those types of people. He had his reserve to escape to when he needed to.

The Lighting Ceremony though was something Charlie had always found himself enjoying. Oh he hadn't gone every year, staying in Romania over the holidays, but the times he had come he couldn't help enjoying himself.

Tonight was no different, things had gotten so much better in recent weeks, he'd stopped going into the Ministry every day, the world was an infinitely better place when most of his time was spent with dragons instead of people. Of course just as these thoughts were going through his mind Charlie found himself caught up by a very familiar woman all wrapped up against the cold.

"Very well, Ms. Head Auror." He assure her with a chuckle. "You look like you're planning on spending quite a bit of time out here." He grinned, and doubted Marlene was capable of ever looking anything but lovely even with all the layers. "How have you been?"

Marlene giggled at the title. Really, one day she'd get used to it, but it was just too soon. She was the one who did outrageous things and hated the uniform; she was not supposed to be the dignified Head of the Aurors. "I still think your family is a bit crazy for putting me there," she said, chuckling.

"It's freezing, there's snow on the ground and it's the Lighting Ceremony. My outfit has to match the mood." She opened the cloak to reveal the form fitting velvet red dress. "I still look good," she said, before covering herself up, because warming charms only worked so far in these temperatures. "It's more than I can say about most people."

She put her arm around his again. "You know, I should really thank you. Because of you, Callum has been civil for the first time since 1965. It's really something."

He snorted and nodded. "I worry less about their sanity when it comes to your placement than I do when you consider they made me a department head." He shook his head, "The way I hear it you're quite good at what you do."

Arching an eyebrow when Marly opened her cloak to show him her dress, Charlie grinned. "I never had any doubt that you would look anything but good - even dressed for the weather." He assured her with a laugh. "Not everyone seems to have the same skills with dressing themselves as you do - you'll have to forgive them that."

"Because of me? I think it might have more to do with Alastor than me, to be perfectly honest." Oh Callum wanted to do this right, but Marlene wasn't family - at least not to Charlie, she was Alastor's family and that's where Charlie could see Callum making the effort.

"Hey, you seem to have done a much better than job. You kept yourself and Callum out of jail and took what you wanted for yourself. Self-interest is what motivates most politicians. I'd say you're brilliant at it," she said with a smirk. "And I'm a great Auror. Sitting behind a desk is not as much fun."

She chuckled. "It's good to know that some men have brains. It doesn't happen often." She smiled at him. "Maybe I should open a school. How to dress appropriately and look amazing."

Marlene snorted. "Love, Alastor and I have been friends forever, and we've been together since he got back. I assure you that it didn't make him be civil. He wanted your party at the house and he would not be nasty about it, just because he's got these 1950s ideas of what's appropriate."

"Well when you put it like that I suppose I wasn't nearly so dreadful at it as I thought, though I'll say a great deal of my success was thanks in large part to my secretaries." He chuckled - he never would have made it through all the paperwork the job required without them, nor understood half of the laws he had to create to make the reserve happened. "We can't all have fun at work, you'll just have to make sure to have more fun when you're off to make up for it."

Charlie had a feeling there were a large number of people who would disagree with the sentiment that he had brains, but he'd take compliments to his intelligence where he could. "I'd say that goes for people in general - not simply men." Laughing he nodded. "A very valuable skill set indeed, I'm sure you could talk to Percy about it." He teased.

"Well I'm glad to help in any way I can." He smiled, he still thought this had more to do with Alastor than himself - maybe the engagement had prompted these talks with Marlene and Alastor but Charlie couldn't see himself as the reason. "He did live through the 1950s." He reminded Marlene with a smirk, "And he's a keeper, we do things a bit differently than the rest of the world."

"You were perfect. Self-interest, leaving when you got what you wanted and getting others to do your job. Really, you'd be the perfect politicians if you didn't love your dragons so much," she teased. "I always have fun when not working. It's the only way to live, darling."

Marlene shrugged. "Now you sound like Alastor." She still thought that on average, men were more stupid simply because all of their blood seemed to be pooled in their groin instead of their head. "I think I'll avoid our dear Minister and keep this as a private enterprise."

She chuckled. "I did live through the 50s as well, love. You don't see me sticking up for all of those rules. Callum has always been-" She cut herself off, because calling Callum an hypocrite was probably not the best idea right now, even if he was. He did what he wanted and then preached about rules and morality. At least, she was open about what she did. "It doesn't matter, I guess. We're being civil and we'll be happy to have your family at the house, especially since I can arrest them if they do something stupid and my boyfriend can make sure that they are found guilty. It's really nice."

"You'll have to tell my brothers that at some point, I don't think any of them could ever really see me as a politician." Even if by Marlene's estimate he'd done the perfect job. "Unfortunately I never have been able to get over my love affair with my dragons, so the world of politics will just have to find someway to survive without me."

"Good company then." He chuckled and wondered briefly just how many times Alastor and Marlene had this particular conversation. "Probably best that you do, looking good has never exactly been at the top of Percy's priorities list."

"Living on a reserve will do that to a person." Charlie told her shrugging, he had a family and was forced to step out of the mores that governed most reserves whenever he came home - but a great many keepers lived completely on the reserves. It was easy to just get stuck in that, for anyone. "I'd like to say they'll be on their best behavior, but I just can't make myself lie to you." Charlie laughed. "So I'd say it's a good thing you and your boyfriend can handle things if they do get out of hand."

"I will. I even have the perfect opportunity. I don't know how, but I found myself inviting the Weasley family to my house." She chuckled. "I'm hoping that your love for them is platonic. I have a feeling that it would hurt otherwise."

Marlene nodded. "Good company, indeed," she said, softly. "In fact, pretty soon, I'll have to go and find him, before he starts behaving as if he's still an Auror. He forgets that he's been promoted."

She wasn't sure if that was true or not, but then she didn't like to argue. "Maybe, and maybe it's just him, but it doesn't matter, because I'm not the one who has to live with him," she said with a smiled. "I never expected you to settle down, and don't worry I won't breathe a word until your birthday."

"Yes you do." Charlie agreed with a laugh. "We Weasleys have a way of working our way in to most families - it probably has something to do with our devastating charm and good looks." Charlie said nodding sagely. "Despite anything you might hear the twins say to the contrary, I would never put that particular part of my anatomy anywhere near a dragon." He assured her with a laugh. "I'd hate to see what happens to the man who does try that one day."

He smirked, glancing around briefly to see if he could spot the younger Moody brother, but didn't find him easily. "I think you'll have your work cut out for you, keeping him from acting like an Auror."

"That's certainly true," Charlie smiled, he was going to be relieved when they finally shared the news with the family and he could have Callum beside him at night again. This wasn't the first time Charlie had gone without a partner, but after the months at Hogwarts he'd grown used to having a warm body in bed with him every night.

Charlie shrugged. "I never thought I'd settle down either, to tell you the truth. I've been quite happy as a bachelor for a good many years."

"I don't know about 'you' Weasleys, but I know that you have made it into the family, even if this is a very unorthodox family, and it has little to do with your looks, and I suspect a lot to do with your cock, but we'd have to ask Callum about that," she said, chuckling, which became a full laughter when Charlie went on. "It's good to know that you aren't crazy or suicidal."

Marlene grinning. "I have my own non official ways to get him to do things." Not always, as their time at Hogwarts had shown, but things were a lot more relaxed now.

"God, you look smitten," she said, smiling warmly. "It's strange thinking that it's Callum putting that look on your face, but I hope you both are happy."
