RP: Edward and Dylan
Who: Edward Chambers and Dylan Vassey
Where: Hogwarts, Trophy Room
When: Tuesday, 26 October, 2025, afternoon
Summary: Edward goes to see a man about a bowl and finds a puzzle instead.

Edward had been waiting impatiently for over twenty minutes outside the office of the Head Curator for the Clio Wing at the British Museum. If the Museum hadn't been one of his most frequent and high paying customers, he would have walked out ten minutes earlier. But, as it was, when the secretary opened the door and announced Fitzwilliam was ready to see him, Edward merely nodded before stepping through the door to the curator's office.

Or, what he had assumed was the office.

For all the times he'd visited the museum, he couldn't remember the curator ever collecting trophies, at least, not actual trophies. The man's collection was something Edward could recite from memory, having been responsible for obtaining most of the pieces and authenticating many of the rest. The bowl he'd been called in to look at was twelfth century, carved from wood that had petrified over the years. It certainly wasn't the tacky silver thing that greeted Edward upon entrance.

Glancing about him, Edward moved cautiously into the room, which was filled with these childish monuments to...wait. The Hogwarts Quidditch Cup? What was that doing in the museum?

Moving closer to visually inspect the cup and then others nearby that held equally recognisable names and honours, Edward frowned. It didn't make sense for so many school awards to be on display at the museum. No one cared that much, not even about Potter's history. And why had the curator arranged for them to be here when Edward was coming to authenticate a new find for him before it was put on display?

There was an open door nearby and Edward slowly walked toward it. If this was some sort of elaborate prank, he most certainly couldn't see the significance. This was something the Weasley Twins might have pulled off. But he couldn't see those two bothering with the museum, even if Fred had still been alive. The door proved to lead to a gallery filled with arms and armour. And this was even more familiar than the trophies left behind him.

Edward had loved to come to the gallery as a student, walk amoung the history and artefacts of bygone wizards.

But, this couldn't be the Hogwarts gallery he'd known any more than that could have been thr trophy room. It had to be an elaborate display for some reason, an exhibit on the history of the school, or something of the sort. There was no other explanation.

Opening another door at the other end of the gallery, Edward found himself in a familiar corridor. And, really, this was getting ridiculous. Spotting someone at the far end of the hall, he called out impatiently. "You there! Find me Curator Fitzwilliam. The man has a lot of bloody nerve wasting my time like this. If he can't be bothered to keep his appointments, the museum can find another expert, although good luck finding anyone better."

Dylan was making rounds as he heard the voice call out for him. Even without seeing the man, he knew what this was about. No one at Hogwarts would shout about museums and people who wouldn't work here. Keeping his wand at the ready he headed over to the man, eyeing him and making an assessment of the level of danger. Even without thinking he raised the shield they'd been trained, thinking of the new regulations.

"You won't find who you're looking for here," he said. "I'm Auror Vaisey, and you're currently at Hogwarts. State your name and hand over your wand, please," he said, gesturing to his chest where the red letter A showed that he was what he said he was. "I need to bring you to the Ministry. Once there you'll get a full explanation of what has happened here today."

He pointed towards the Entrance Hall. "After you."

Edward stared coldly at the alleged auror before him. Really? This was too much. The Museum was going to need to find themselves another archaeologist after this. No commission was worth this.

"Right, you're an auror. And I'm Marie Laveau." Edward huffed in disbelief. Crossing his arms he raised an eyebrow. "Anyone can fake robes and the museum is certainly large enough to carry out an elaborate staging. To what purpose, I don't care. But, I am certainly not handing over my wand to someone claiming to be an Auror with no credentials, no explanation of what is supposedly going on in this elaborate fantasy world someone's constructed, and nothing but vague promises of an explanation that somehow requires detention at the Ministry with no clear cause for such detainment.

"Now, either someone tells me what the hell is going on, or this Museum can send it's artefacts to Zimbabwe for authentication for all I care." It wasn't as though he truly needed the money. Obtaining items of the age and value he specialised in was not one particularly lacking in financial prosperity.

As the man spoke, Dylan took out his badge and showed the man, his wand still at the ready. "As you can see, I'm what I say I am. I'm certainly not playing games and posing as an Auror is illegal. Now you can argue, or you can come along to the Ministry and get the explanations you need," he said. "I'm under orders to bring you, one way or another."

"Now, I'm asking a final time to state your name, hand over your wand and come with me to the Ministry." If that did not work he'd be required to use force, but he'd rather not since the man did not seem dangerous. To make sure he ran a wordless scanning spell over the man, detecting only his wand. It would not be hard to take if he needed to.

Leaning forward, Edward inspected the badge carefully, his practised eye confirming an initial theory of authenticity. He made no move to confirm his acceptance of the evidence or not. He did, however, snort at the posturing of legalities. "Legalities matter little to some people, Auror...Vaisey, was it? A man might say anything. I find it better to confirm facts myself rather than take the word of a random wizard claiming authority without proof.

"Now, as it seems I am stuck with your boorish manners until I play along with your demands, you may have my wand." He flicked the object from his sleeve and presented it with an arrogant flourish. "And then you may go ahead and lead the way to the Ministry, where you may inform the Head of your division Edward Chambers demands some answers for this ridiculous waste of my time."

Dylan had to keep himself from laughing at the tone the man spoke in. It was so pompous and self important it was almost funny. "Thank you, Mr Chambers," he said instead, keeping a straight face as he took the wand from the man. "And I assure you that you'll get all the answers you're looking for," he added as he gestured towards the Entrance Hall. He wasn't about to go first.

"After you," he said. He waited until Chambers moved then followed half a step behind. Once at the doors, he greeted the other Auror, asking him to call in and say that he was bringing Mr Edward Chambers in. That way the Ministry would have ample time to check up on him. As they headed outside, he cast heating charms on both himself and Mr Chambers because it was not as if he needed to be rude about it.

"I know it must seem ridiculous to you," he said as they walked. "But if you look back you'll see that this isn't a some elaborate hoax. This really is Hogwarts. No hoax would be this elaborate." He pondered what he should and shouldn't tell, but in the end his orders didn't say not to tell, it just said to bring them in.

"What date do you think today is?" he asked.

"I usually do," Edward said evenly. All right, so his answers were usually more of the academic variety. But, he was annoyed. This was supposed to be a simple appointment. Examine a bowl allegedly crafted in the Dark Ages, but reported to be the origins of the myth of Cerridwen's Cauldron. Confirm if it is authentic. Return home to finish culling through the books on the Founders he'd recently obtained.

Nowhere in the plan was there mention of get transported to Hogwarts as part of some prank he had yet to see the nature of. He had important work to do. There was no time for this.

He walked briskly through the corridor and down the stairs to the Entrance Hall. The delay with the second man in Auror robes was annoying, but soon enough they were on the grounds. If Edward noticed the warming charm, he made no mention of it. His goal was the gates and then the Ministry, and possibly bringing the full weight of the academic world upon their heads if this did indeed turnout to be a joke.

"Of course it's ridiculous," he said. "I don't have time for these sort of games. A castle does not negate the possibility I am being played and that I have no tolerance or patience for, young man. Nor do I intend to answer absurd questions such as what the date is. You have insisted I must go out of my way to attend on the Ministry in order to find out the reason for my inconvenience and I will address my thoughts to whomever there is in charge of this farce." There was no need to repeat himself.

Young man? This he really had bite his lip for. Seriously, what was the man? ten years older than him or something? Possibly a bit more, but not much. He sounded as if he was in his fifties though. He was glad he was half a step behind the man.

"I assure you, you're not being played, Mr Chambers," he said. "There is a spell bringing people here, to Hogwarts, from different times," he said without going into specifics. "That is why I need to know the date. You'll be asked the same question at the Ministry." They reached the gates and Dylan through the charm to unlock them. As he did so, he took a firm hold of Mr Chambers' arm, making sure he wasn't going anywhere as he opened the gate. As they stepped through, the gate locked behind them and Dylan Apparated them both to the Ministry holding cells.

"Take a seat, Mr Chambers," he said. "I have several questions I need to ask you, once we're done I'll explain exactly what has happened and how this spell works. Is that acceptable?" he asked. "I assure you you are not missing any appointment."

"What I need to know is your full name, the date which you remember last and the names of a couple of family members." He conjured up a paper and a quill, taking a seat opposite the man and waiting for his answers.

Edward stared at the Auror for a long moment, not even rolling his eyes at the late attempt to secure him. Honestly, if he'd intended to go anywhere, he wouldn't be walking calmly along and going with this insanity.

When they arrived at what he assumed was the Ministry, Edward took the perfunctorily offered seat with an impatient sigh. "Time travel," he said finally. "You're telling me that someone at Hogwarts has figured out how to manipulate time to such a degree as to pull the unwilling into...what? When? To what year am I supposed to have travelled?"

Approaching this situation as he might have any other search for information -- and he'd had more evidence pointing toward ancient pre-historical artefacts than he felt he had now -- Edward sorted through what he did know. He'd been at the Museum and walked through a door into Hogwarts. It was possible, he supposed, someone could have set up an advanced portkey in the doorway. But, that would have required compliance from both the staff of the Museum and the Headmaster of Hogwarts. Edward knew little about the current Headmaster, but, despite his irritation, he couldn't see the Head Curator setting something like this up.

This could be anywhere. It wasn't as if Edward was familiar with Ministry holding cells to know what one looked like enough to authenticate his surroundings. But, it didn't seem likely he would get any further corroborating information if he didn't go along with this.

"Edward Ryan Chambers and the last date I remember is today, the seventh of November, two thousand eleven." Time travel? Edward shook his head. "I assume, if you're looking to verify identity, you'll be looking to speak to these relatives. Unfortunately, none of them are in the country. My parents, Brandon and Rebecca Chambers, are on site overseeing a dig in Mexico the last I heard. My brother, Charles, is off another of his walkabouts somewhere. If you can find him, good luck."

Dylan wrote down the information Mr Chambers gave him, watching the purple paper he'd been writing on duplicate and take flight to their intended destination. Someone would verify that Mr Chambers was who he claimed to be and try to alert his family if possible.

"Thank you, Mr Chambers," he said. "We'll try to locate your family, if not we'll find some other way to confirm your identity."

"The date today is October 26, 2025," he said as he looked up at the other man. "The spell which brought you here has been active since last September. Several people have returned, some, like you, from rather recent years, others from as far back as the early 20th century." He paused. "What you all have in common, is that you all at some point died."

Edward chuckled, but said nothing. There were a number of ways to verify a person's identity. But, he didn't need to share that information.

"Yes, well, tell your men to be careful, then. They're all muggles. The dig is a muggle operation, staffed by muggles. And if you think the Mexican muggle government has a reputation, you ought to meet the Wizarding government there."

The rest of what the man said made him shake his head. "Two thousand twenty-five? And you expect me to believe I'm already dead? At forty-eight? As I am currently excellent health, I can only assume I met with an unfortunate end. So, what was it? Another accident on a dig? Foiling a robbery at the house?"

He was still annoyed, but poking holes at this fabrication was beginning to amuse Edward.

The news that he man was a muggleborn changed things, of course. Even if the man's parents knew of magic, which they would, how did you explain returning from the dead? Then again, that really wasn't his table was it? His was simply to bring them, question and inform them.

Summoning a paper, he put it on the table in front of the man. "Take a look for yourself," he said. "I don't expect you to take my word on it."

"I don't know yet how you died, no doubt that's being looked through right now. "You should have an answer soon."

Edward glanced at the paper, but as he'd already stated, anything could be faked. Instead he sat there, fingers drumming on his knee, trying to put the pieces together.

"All right," he said, finally, "you have a paper supposedly from a future time and my life is being looked into. What now? Did you have more questions, or am I to sit here and wait until someone decides to do something?"

Dylan wished there was something else he could answer, but instead he nodded. "Yes, though it should not be much longer," he said. "A few more minutes then someone will bring the information to you."

He didn't think Mr Chambers believed him yet, but then that wasn't quite necessary either. He'd learn the truth eventually, and adapt to the situation.

"I'll go and see where the information is," he said. "In the mean time, you need to consider whether you have some means of employment or not. If you do not, you have the right to a stipend from the Ministry until you can get a job."

He got up and walked to the door. "Before I leave, is there anything else you want to know?" he asked.

Edward shook his head. There was nothing he needed so much as information. From there, he could assess the situation, deal with this inconvenience, and get back to his life and his research.

Perhaps he should start with researching this time travel theory. If it proved to be true, who knew the possibilities?
