Summary: James says his peace
He had spent the best part of yesterday bitching and raving. Thinking back it was amazing that Sirius hadn't strangled him - or Severus, because Sirius would always want an excuse to hex Severus. The second part was spent talking to Regulus and Remus, considering the possibility and finally deciding that he was leaving; they were leaving. It wasn't an easy choice, but he couldn't imagine doing anything different when Severus refused to rule as a group.
Today came the final part of his plan. He sent a house elf to both Severus and Alastor, asking them to meet him in the security headquarter. At the beginning, he had thought about talking to Alastor alone, because he didn't want to talk to the other man, but he was a Gryffindor, and unlike Severus, he didn't go behind people's back, he didn't hide or shy away from problems, he faced them head on and right now the problem was Severus. He had also thought about going to his room instead of calling him into the headquarters, but he didn't want Al involved, at least not just yet.
When they were finally in the room and had sent everyone out, casting privacy spells, James finally spoke up, and while this was for all of them, his eyes were on Severus. "I understand that you think I'm an idiot and an ignorant. You've said it often enough, and you've made enough veiled and not so veiled comments, and I might not know useless magical theories that weren't used once your generation of madman died out, luckily earlier than natural death would allow, but I can spot a problem a kilometer away and if you gave me half a chance, I could make a difference, but you obviously aren't interested in an equal relationship in this leadership.
"Somehow you think this is a beauty contest, but that's your own problems speaking, because if that were true, the Headmaster would have never been in charge of anything. It's not a pureblood contest, because again, neither the Headmaster nor my father were purebloods and people did what they said. It's not a House contest, because Moody is not a Gryffindor. It's not a family contest, because Regulus is not part of this triad. I would have hoped that a grown man could discuss things based on the situation and not based on problems, grudges and hang ups that began fifty years ago, but you can't seem to let go and you let that past interfere with the way you interact with me.
"You've shown in more than one occasion that you don't trust us - or maybe just me - enough to tell us what's going on. You keep things for yourself, make unilateral decisions, and stop us from discussing things. You have, to all intents and purposes, have removed yourself from making joint decisions, and in your immense brilliancy, have decided that we shouldn't know about the existence of a child who could cause your death. You have withheld information about a treat to the one person who commands every spell in this castle. You didn't tell us about a threat that could kill everyone in this castle and annihilate any resistance to Riddle. There are no justifications or excuses for keeping this from us, not that I expect any from you, because when you fuck up, your answer is to insult and acted insulted, which is fine if you're a five year old, but not so fine when you are forty and in charge."
He stopped, but not too long. This wasn't a debate. He had made a decision and was simply explaining his thought process, before telling them the final decision. "Given all of them, I can't trust you not to make unilateral decisions that will get all of us killed. The idea that since you've been fighting for decades that's not possible is ludicrous, because my father has proven that it doesn't matter how much you've fought, you can always fuck up. None of us thought that he would betray us, but none of us trusted him. I thought I could trust you, but you are no different than him, too used to make decisions without talking, without consulting. When people ask me, I say that I have to talk to you two. You make your own decision by yourself. That's not acceptable, not in this type of leadership, and since you obviously have no intention of changing your ways, I've decided that it's time for me to pull out. I've spoken with Sirius, and we're leaving. Remus and Regulus will come with us. We have our own safe houses and we can take people with us. I'll give them the choice if they want to come or stay, and it will be up to them. As soon as the tunnels are opened, we won't bring Belvina in; we will leave. I will wait for you to make the arrangements so you and Alastor can take over my duties, but I'm not waiting forever. If you want, I'll do a speech so people know what's going on, or you can. It's really up to you guys. I'm hoping that we can do this in a week or so," he finished, looking at the other two men, and hoping that this could be done a lot sooner than a week.
