RP: The Secrets of Lord Voldemort, Part Six
Who: Marlene, Volemort
Where: Orphanage, London
When: Afternoon, 14 May, 2025
Rating/Warnings:
Summary: Marlene finds another one of Ridde's hidden places

Since the night at the cemetery, Marlene knew that she was on the right track. The memories and treasures belonging to Lord Voldemort were hidden in the Muggle world. She had narrowed the timing to the late 60s, 72 at the most. It made sense that he would go into the Muggle world. No one knew he was the son of a Muggle and no one would have looked for anything there. This research would also be more important than the earlier one, more accurate. These would be the memories after years of research and experiments. Magic that could hurt more. Marlene was sure that there would be even more powerful magic protecting it, something that the Muggles wouldn't catch, but she would.

With the help of two Muggleborn Aurors, they had narrowed down the Muggle places that could have any significance for Voldemort, and then she began visiting them, checking for any sign of magic, dark or light, active or latent. She didn't want to miss anything. She went to the Riddle house even if she knew that it was unlikely. It was the first and shortest visit, before moving on. This afternoon, she found herself where the old orphanage used to be. It was a store block now, shops and offices lined up with nothing to remember what used to be.

There was a small dark alley on one side. She walked there and soon her tracking spells told her that she was on the right track. She followed the magic, Apparating in the cellar of one of the shops. It was filled with crates, but they didn't hold her interest. No, there was an old furnace in the corner that reeked of magic. When she got closer, something on the wall caught her attention. She used magic to get rid of the dust and then she could see words scratched into the stone, names, fears. She looked at the furnace again, and there were marks on it as well. An orphanage, children being kept here, possibly being punished, tied here. For a moment, her heart ached for that boy that would become the most feared Dark wizard. At least it's warm had been written at one point. How terrible! She was absorbed in studying everything around her that she almost missed the noise of the Apparition and she turned, wand lit, trying to find the exact spot where the person was.

The location of his sixth stash was obvious from the moment he had learned of the location of the fifth: It would be somewhere in the Orphanage. Of course, he had been disappointed (ironic as that was) that the Orphanage had been demolished and replaced by newer Muggle buildings. He knew his magic would have kept the secrets safe, but he needed to figure out how to get to them. He had thought of procuring a time turner and going back in time to retrieve them, but there was not time to do that. The irony made him laugh.

So, he would just have to do this the old fashioned way. He apparated near to where the Orphanage used to stand and strode through the business offices, killing the feeble Muggles that dared to stand in his way.

He blasted his way into the area that was immediately above the old furnace room. A quick charm later and he learned he would not be apparating into stone.

After he appeared in the furnace room, he raised his invisibility charms and began prowling along the wall. He had to be sure it wasn't Him.

It didn't take long to figure out it wasn't Dumbledore: The lack of a radiance of power was enough.

"You are trifling with powers beyond your imagination," he hissed into the dark, his voice magicked so to appear coming from all different parts of the room. Of course he was careful that his voice did not reflect fear or curiosity. And he was most curious that someone would find this room.

He couldn't kill the person. No, he had to make sure whoever it was did not know too much.

Petrificus Totalus, he thought the instant he dropped the invisibility charm. He really had to learn to cast while invisible.

She knew she had heard something, so why couldn't she see anyone? She cast another spell, creating a ball of light moving through the cellar, lighting it. She thought she saw a shadow, but then there was a voice from the opposite side of the room. She turned abruptly. She knew that voice; she knew it was him.

"Immobulus." She cast the spell in the direction of the voice, but nothing happened. "Not beyond my imagination; I'm here after all," she replied, trying to buy time. Did she risk casting a message to Dumbledore and not be ready to defend herself? Soon the choice was taken from her, as she felt the hex hit her from behind, and only years of training, allowed her to shift her balance so when she fell, she landed on her side, eyes toward the furnace. No matter what, she'd want to see the Dark Lord.

"Tsk, tsk," Voldemort said as he approached her paralyzed body, his own body illuminated by emerald light that seemed to have no source. "Don't you aurors ever learn-"

He stopped recognizing her face. Marlene McKinnon. "One of Albus' stooges," he dragged a bare foot across her face, grinding his heel into her jaw. "I'll deal with you in a minute."

Voldemort turned his attention back to the wall. He withdrew a bottle from his robes and uncorked it. The room filled with sounds of little girls and boys screaming in terror, wishing for the pain to stop, and screeching about horrors of cold and hot and their nightmares coming to life. All that cost was torturing a class full of school children from a neighboring school.

The voices of the tortured kids interacted with the magic on the wall, which shimmered and trembled as the half-century old spells yielded their prizes.

"The Dark Lord Victorious," He smiled gleefully as he reached out to take the book and vial.

There wasn't much she could do other than to keep a clear head. The insult and pain with intent of humiliate her made it easier, pushing any fear she might have away, concentrating on anger and the sad fact that she would look terrible in the morning, because she would find a way to make it through this. She would not let this child win.

His attention was elsewhere, which allowed her to see everything. The cries from the children were like a kick in the stomach. So many lives, so many young beautiful children hurt and for what? A book and some memories. She would have to take them from him. Steal them and Disapparate. The loss would make him angry, give him another reason to slip up.

Damn, she really wished she could move more, but instead she only saw his shoes as he got closer. Soon, it would be play time, and she would have to be quick and alert. She pushed away all her thoughts about her family and those last moments before arriving here, she locked into a corner of her mind Alastor. She couldn't think of anything, but that book, that vial and a way to get out of here.

Voldemort turned his attention back to Marlene, the vial and book he had left floating in the air. He obviously didn't see the thing on the floor as a threat.

"Now, where were we," he looked her over as she raised off the floor, standing. Imperio. He thought before lowering the petrification spell.

"You should consider yourself honored," he ran a bony finger down her cheek as their eyes met and he forced his way into her mind. "Not many get the privilege of dying at my hand."

He questioned her about how she knew to look here and what she was hoping to find. At the same time, he fleeted from memory to memory trying to find something of import. "Oh you are going to be such fun," he muttered as he forced his way past irrelevant memories, undoubtedly thrown up to prevent him from accessing something. But what?

Marlene felt the effect of the Imperius while still unable to move. It was strange to have this sense of peace come over her. It would be so easy to let go and just accept it. No more worries, no more thinking about Alastor and doubts. Just questions and answers.

"I was looking for you," she answered truthfully. That was the first question, but as he kept prodding with his sarcasm and then with legilimency the idea of this emotional bliss became more and more intolerable. She lived on emotions, good and bad, and under the pretences of bliss this was nothing more than emotional numbness.

She fought the Imperius, while trying to not to make him sense it. It wasn't that easy when he was inside your head. She tried not to tense up, not to give him any outward signs before saying, "Stupefy".

Voldemort pooled around in her mind, half-listening to her answers. But why were you looking for me?

He thought that he was on the cusp of finding the answer when he felt the most unusual sensation: Defiance.

In the split second, he conjured a shield that deflected the hex but the force of which propelled him away from Marlene.

"Whore!" He cried out while shooting another immobilization hex at her. "Now you'll find out what happens to those who defy Lord Voldemort!"

Of course, he still needed to know what she knew. And that became quite difficult if she was dead.

He followed the hex up by raining lightning down in her general area.

He could surprise her once, but not again. If he'd immobilised her for a second time, she'd have quit (if she had survived). Instead she Apparated within the room. She needed to keep moving, but she also needed to retrieve those two items that were currently close to the Dark Lord.

"You wish I were. It might do you good to get laid," she said, while she Apparated all around, trying to unnerve him. Then the lightening began and she was forced to Apparate even faster, changing location within the room. "Accio book," she whispered from a corner of the room. One more and she could leave.

"Let's see just how well the Old Fool has taught you," several snake-like conjurations appeared and sped toward Marlene, spitting a kind of poison.

"No!" He screamed in rage as the book zoomed away. He had blinked and it was all the time she needed to take HIS book. He shouldn't have blinked.

The vial zoomed inside his robe while he summoned hundreds of electrified spears that flew across the room. He knew the book would be protected against them, but a pesky Order member not a chance.

"Give. It. Back." He advanced, following the spears.

The snakes came at her with magical speed, and when their saliva touched her skin, she felt like her body was on fire, and then one of the creatures sank its teeth into her leg, making her scream in pain.

Marlene was stubborn, very stubborn, but she wasn't stupid or suicidal. Dying while trying to get the vial wouldn't help anyone. She knew that she needed to get out of here and now. As she disapparated, she felt the shock from one of the spears, and she grabbed it instinctually. If it were cursed, the healers would be better equipped to help her this way.

She went straight to St. Mungo's. The poison was taking effect quickly. She could feel it affecting her, making her sluggish. "Poisoned... Voldemort." That was all that she could say before collapsing in the reception area, book safe in her auror robe and spear tight in her grasp.

Voldemort watched as the snake sank into Marlene's leg. He forced all of his will power into the summoning spell, calling for the book.

"Give it back," he hissed again. He felt the book begin to move but then she was gone.

"NOOOOO!" He roared in utter dismay. His secrets were gone. Stolen by the Whore.

Great forces of magic erupted from him and spread outward, colliding with the building's foundation causing it to collapse. He disapparated. Enraged. Furious. Defeated.

Healer Cunningham was with a patient when the call came, but left the moment he got the information. The patient was in critical condition, unconscious and clutching a spear in her hand.

After running a quick diagnosis to determine what needed to be dealt with first, he barked out an order to the mediwitch, and cast a spell to keep the poison from spreading through her body. For now the spear could wait, and he used a spell to dislodge it from her hand and levitate it onto the ground, where he cast another spell to keep people from touching it accidentally. It would have to be examined later.

When the mediwitch returned with the potion, he spread it at first on the woman's legs, drawing out the poison from her body, then did the same to the places of her skin where the poison had hit her. It would a slow process, and with no way of knowing how long the poison had been in her system or how fast it worked, it was hard to know how much chance of success they'd have.

With the poison dealt with, he could deal with the rest of her system. There was a curse, likely from the spear, and he needed to have that looked at. He ordered a mediwitch to levitate the spear to Healer Nott's office. He was the one working with curses, after all. When it was out of the room, he turned to the woman in the bed and woke her up.

"Don't move," he said as she opened her eyes. "The poison is still in your system, and there is an unknown curse at work," he said softly. "We've stopped it spreading for now, and is drawing out the poison as best we can. But you're very week, and unless we come up with a cure you will die. It's important that we get as much fact as possible."

"Do you know what kind of poison it is? When were you infected? What can you tell us about the curse?" He drew up a chair and sat down. "Tell us as many details as you can. Is there someone you want us to contact in the meantime?"

Marlene woke up, feeling like was about to die. No, that wasn't true. She felt like she wanted to die. She felt like she was burning from the inside, although the feeling wasn't as bad as it had been when she had Disapparated from the cellar.

She tried to focus on the voice. "Can't move even if I wanted to," she said, trying to make it sound like a joke, but it was too much like the truth. "No idea what it was, about either of them. Poison was from conjured up snakes. Curse from spears, also conjured up. Both courtesy of Voldemort. You'll have to ask him for more details. When? I don't know how long I've been here, but a few moments before I Apparated here, a minute or two at the most."

She closed her eyes, trying to catch her breath. Talking hurt like hell. "Dumbledore. Firecall him. He should be at the Ministry." Who else? Potter, Alastor, she had the watch but would she be able to use it? "My office, Alastor Moody. They'll know what to do."

Cunningham noted down the information, drawing conclusions based on them. "The spear is being examined, so will the poison be," he said. "You haven't been here very long, and the potion is drawing out the poison though it's slow. We need to speed up the process, but for that we need to figure out which poison we're dealing with. The potion will keep you alive while we work."

He looked at the mediwitch and watched her disappear. "We'll contact both of them," he said. "And now I need you to rest. I have a few more diagnostic spells I need to run but I want you to ignore me. When I'm finished I'll leave you alone to rest while working on finding the right antidote, okay?" he asked. He waited for her yes before casting his spells, and when he was finished, he patted the woman on the shoulder, and left the room. There was a lot of work that needed to be done if they were to save her, and the time they had was limited.

Alastor/Marly

It was the message no one wanted to get. When the Healers contacted him at the office, Alastor did what needed to be done. He notified Potter and the leader of the Voldemort Taskforce, assuming they would need to check out the scene once they knew where Marlene had been. Then he sent a message to Dumbledore, Snape, and Potter's son to inform them of the incident and that he was en route to Mungo's. If Marlene had been conscious enough to give them names to contact, she likely would have given them Dumbledore's name as well. But, Alastor couldn't be sure until he saw her.

Only once the details were taken care of did he make his way to the hospital. Luckily -- or, perhaps unluckily for the poor woman behind the counter -- the mediwitch on duty had been one of those who'd been assigned to the wing he'd been in during his own stint in hospital earlier in the year and she was more than happy to direct him to where Marlene was being treated in return for not having to listen to him threaten everyone else in the hospital until he found where she was.

Another mediwitch was just leaving the room when he arrived, but she only gave him a look as she passed and didn't try to stop him going inside. Not wanting to disturb her if she was asleep, he moved quietly to the bed and took her hand gently in his.

Marlene had her eyes closed. Somehow it was seemed easier to deal with the pain without having to look at all the people coming in and out, seeing the pity in their eyes. There were days when picking up on people's emotions really sucked.

When she felt the hand around hers, she smiled, because it could only be one person. Healers and mediwizards didn't go around touching her hand and Dumbledore would have been a lot louder in his entrance. "Hello, love." She opened her eyes and smiled at him. "You got here before Dumbledore." Of course, knowing the old man, he might be counting on Alastor's visit. "There's a book-" She wet her lips, needing the strength to go forward. "It's what Voldemort wanted. You must give it to the D man. He can figure out where next better than the division." Marlene squeezed his hand. "You okay?"

"I don't have to make pretty excuses to politicians before I can leave the Ministry," Alastor huffed with a smirk. Although, privately, he had to admit to being surprised that even after all the time he'd taken to notify those he needed to he'd beaten Dumbledore to the hospital.

His attention was off that question immediately, however, as she mentioned the book. Nodding briskly, he was all business -- not that he was ever really anything else. He could process the thoughts in the back of his head that were truly reacting to seeing her like this later, when he wasn't needed. "Where," he asked, ready to retrieve it first.

He snorted softly at her question. "I'm not the one lazing about in bed," he teased, growing serious again a moment later. "How are you -- truth, not platitudes."

"Or he knows that you'll come and there's no sense for the two of you to be here, although- I think I prefer him. At least he'd kiss me, even if just my forehead," she said, smiling softly.

She nodded to the stand. "Inside the drawer you can take it when you leave. Didn't have time to check it for curses. Be careful."

Marlene laughed, but it ended abruptly as the pain took her breath away. "I feel like shit. Unknown poison, which makes it difficult for them to treat, and unknown curse, which makes it even more difficult. The healer was... less then optimistic about my recovery." She pulled on his hand. "Stay with me for a while and then you should go. You shouldn't be here if- You have other things to do."

"Well, I'll be sure to let him come in my stead next time." Still, he indulged her, leaning down to press a kiss to her forehead with a smirk.

Alastor wasn't one to let things lay unattended and, if any of the Healers should come try to shoo him away, he didn't want them to see him take the book. Pulling off one of the evidence pouches he kept at his belt, he summoned the book from the drawer and used his wand to put it in the wizarding space inside the pouch. The pouch was magically insulated inside and out to prevent other spells from breaking through. "I'll deliver it to him later."

The diagnosis was bleak, reading between the lines of her pause. Sitting next to the bed when she tugged on his hand, he shook his head. "I'm not going anywhere just yet. And don't try shooing me." Nor was he leaving her alone. If she got something valuable away from Voldemort, she was too vulnerable here to be left on her own. If he had to leave, he wasn't going until he had someone else from the Order there to watch her. "I've had a few lessons on stubborn nursemaids recently."

"You're so accommodating. I'll have to get hexed more often," she answered.

Of course, she should have known better than to think that he'd leave the book alone, and since he wanted to work, she could hardly not share what she knew. "I've made a list of places where he could be hiding things. I crossed out the ones I checked, but I think he's following a script, so something in the book would help finding the next location. So fucking close and I couldn't. I bloody hate disillusionment spells."

She smiled. "Didn't learn enough. I'd be in bed with you already, which you might have to do, because I'm not allowed to move until they figure this poison, and then the spear. Nott has it, but ask Grindelwald when you go home." How strange was it to be lying here thinking about things that should be done to keep her alive. All in all, she thought that dying like she had was preferable to this. "He didn't want me dead; he knows how to stop this, and I'm rambling."

"Or not."

He made note of the information with a short nod of acknowledgement. Focusing on work was what he did. He could react later when the important things were taken care of and he gave himself permission. "Funny, you used to love disillusionment spells. Where were you, Marly-girl? We'll need to send the team to the site for protocol."

Chuckling, Alastor shook his head. "Incorrigible wench. I'll talk to a Healer first before I'm climbing into bed with you and you'll just have to deal with my being cautious about it." Brushing a lock of hair off her forehead, he shook his head. "Stop. You're rambling and you need to rest. You did your job. You did it well. Now just let it go until the Healers have done their jobs."

"Don't like them when he's better than me. Bloody annoying then." Marlene turned her head to see him better. "Cellar in London, Robertson has the address. It's the old orphanage where he was raised," she told him. "I've been working with him and Hathaway, they've been helping me with all this Muggle technology."

She moved their joined hand with difficulty, and pressed his hand against his cheek. "I love you, but don't tell me to let it go. That Healer told me I'll die unless they can find out what he used, so I'd rather think of work than dying, if it's all the same with you. I'd suggest that we'd finally shag, but I'm rather incapacitated at the moment, so I'm left with thing about what happened, what he might have used, and how we can figure out what this curse is since it would lead to me not dying."

Alastor gave another nod of his head. "I'll give the lead a heads up and tell him to talk to them. Dumbledore will know the orphanage." He wanted someone else to get there soon so he could the book to Dumbledore and tell him what was going on. Alastor would give it ten more minutes and then he'd start summoning back-up.

"You're not allowed to die on me a second time," he said quietly. "I'm going with the irrational on this one and putting my foot down. It's not allowed and I will inform the Healer of that if I have to." Let his reputation do some work for him in scaring a cure out of the staff. Marlene may have been smiling, but her words brought a sharp look from Alastor. He didn't want to make her worry unduly, however, by pointing out she was likely now a target in a big way. "I told you, I'm not leaving."

Squeezing back gently, he frowned. "Stop. Now. We're not discussing that." He didn't care what the healers said. It wasn't an option. Getting her back for only a couple months just wasn't acceptable. "I'm sure you'll manage to survive." Chuckling, he leaned over to comply with her request, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. "So demanding," he teased, willing to put the subject of her possible death off the table of conversation.

"Are you really going to hover? That's very annoying. If you insist on being here, you'll have to get in bed with me, or I'll fire you as my nursemaid." Alastor would make an awful mediwizard anyway.

Marlene nodded. She wasn't as sure as he was, but they could postpone this discussion. For now. She had every intention of talking to him about this. "You should talk to Nott. He's in charge of keeping me alive." She reached up to touch his cheek and such a simple act took so much energy, but she needed to feel him. "I love you." She closed her eyes, sighing. The news of Marlene's injuries were surely unwelcome, and after dealing with the paperwork needed, and making sure everyone knew what to do, Harry left the office for St Mungo's.

He didn't have to wait to be let in, but was guided to the right room immediately, getting an update on her condition on his way. Entering, he nodded when he saw Alastor and Marlene. "Hello, McKinnon," he said with a small smile, looking at her. "Moody," he then greeted.

He conjured up a chair and sat down. "How are you feeling?" he asked. "What happened?"

Marlene blinked, because she was hallucinating now, except that she wasn't. Potter was really here, and she couldn't imagine why. Didn't he have better things to do than waste his time here? Couldn't he wait for that report?

"I'm fine, Sir," she answered, because what else was she supposed to say to her boss? "I've been searching for places where he could have stores memories. I found one this afternoon, he arrived, we fought, and I managed to Disapparate." Dumbledore would decide if the book would be handed over. She trusted him and Grindelwald to find Voldemort more than the division. "I was hit with a poison and a cursed spear. Healers don't know what."

Alastor saw Potter coming and mentally drew a relieved breath. He could leave Potter here with her long enough to get to Dumbledore and come back. He and Potter could discuss how much time Alastor would be spending in the hospital later.

When Marlene finished her brief report, he spoke before Potter could respond. "Dumbledore needs to be informed of what's happened," he said, smirking at Marlene. "The boss can keep you company until I get back. I won't be long."

Alastor turned to Potter. "If you don't mind, of course, Sir." He could make a pretence of checking with the boss. But, if Potter said he couldn't stay, Alastor would start sending messages until he found someone who could.

He knew enough to know she wasn't 'fine' but he wouldn't push, instead he listened when she went on. "Good work," he said. "Now focus on getting better. We really can't afford to lose you."

He turned to Moody. "Of course I don't mind. I suspect McKinnon might likely prefer your company over my own, however," he said with a smile. "I'm happy to inform Dumbledore of anything so that you can stay. But it's up to the two of you."

"I'll do my best," she answered with a smile, although it wasn't as easy to play a part when everything hurt. Still, she tried.

"It's fine, Sir. I might enjoy his company, but Alastor will go mad if he doesn't get out of here and do something. Too much of an Auror to sit still in here." She rubbed Alastor's hand with her thumb. "Go, take as long as you need."

Harry nodded, that was an argument that he could certainly understand. "Then I'll stay until he comes back, or until one of your other friends arrive," he said. "You don't need to worry about her while you're gone, I'll let you know if anything changes," he said.

"If you need to, don't hesitate to sleep. I'll keep watch and there is security coming just in case."
