Greg looked into the woods and pulled his wand out. "It'll be okay," he said with a reassuring smile. "I've been dealing with big animals since I started my training. They used to get me in to help out with anything over the size of a dog that had a temper." He glanced down at himself, waving a hand to indicate his height and size then continued in a wry tone. "Can't imagine why."
He chuckled at her reaction to the colt's hunger. "You might be able to get all of that into him then. Good. He'll need it."
He watched her for another moment but she had things well in hand so he ventured into the woods, pausing only to mutter, "Lumos". he didn't think he'd have to go too far. The colt was too young to have wandered a long distance. He quickly established a search pattern, going back and forth in a wide sweep.
He was just starting to get nervous about what was going on when he stepped into a small clearing and found what he was looking for. He could tell even from here that the beautiful white unicorn was dead but he hurried over and checked anyway in the hope that he might be wrong. When he kneeled down beside the creature he could see what had happened and he sighed sadly. There wasn't anything he could do for her and he always hated that.
He patted the unicorn's neck and got to his feet, making his way back to Minerva. Now that he knew where it was he'd be able to navigate his way back in the morning when it would be easier to deal with her.
"She's dead," he said heavily when he got back to the girl and the colt. He knelt down and stroked the little creature's neck. "Looks like she was galloping or cantering and put her foot in a concealed rabbit hole. Went down hard and broke her leg and her neck. It happens unfortunately. To horses and unicorns." He stroked the colt's neck again. "Looks like this little fellow is officially an orphan."
