Having gotten off work from Olivander's early, and rather envious of Alicia getting to deal with that handsome customer all by herself, Minerva went to Longbottom House instead of popping into to visit her mum at the Leaky. Hannah was being rather bitchy since Minerva let it slip that Neville had gone out on a date with Professor Silver, not that Minerva could understand why. After all, her parents were divorced. Her dad could see who he wanted.
After taking a shower, Minerva slipped into a pair of denims and a t-shirt, then getting a glass of wine from the icebox she went outside to smoke a fag. It was nice having Longbottom House to herself. She didn't know where her father was, and really didn't care. Hopefully he was out for the night - maybe at the school, trying to get things sorted before September. Later, she would have their house elf make her something for dinner but not now. Now was time for relaxing with a good glass of wine and a smoke.
The back of Longbottom House was a huge expanse of lawn that met up with woods which both Minerva and Frankie had explored when they were children. It wasn't a big forest like the one at Hogwarts, but one could get lost in the woods and her dad said that it could take someone at least a few days to walk from one end of the woods to get to the other side. Sometimes at night little woodland creatures came from the woods onto the estate, when no one was around to catch them.
Minerva lit a fag and drew in deep, putting her feet up on a chair that was close to the one she was sitting in. She closed her eyes after taking a sip of her wine and let her head fall back, letting the sunlight bathe her face.
When she brought her head back up again so she could take another sip of her wine, she looked out into the woods - and caught a flash of gold.
huh?
Minerva put her wine glass down and sat up proper in her seat. She waited, but the spot where she saw the golden light in the woods was dark again. Minerva shrugged, then averted her eyes, taking another drag off her cigarette.
As she exhaled smoke, there it was again! Just a few feet away from where she had seen it again - a flash of gold light. Minerva stood up and ground her cigarette into the ashtray on the patio table. Taking out her wand, she went to go investigate.
"Oh my gods," Minerva breathed, putting her wand away when she finally discovered what was causing the flashing of gold in the woods. A unicorn, not even old enough to have turned from it's gold hue.
It looked at her as it stood on the edge of the woods, its flanks shivering and Minerva knelt down - trying to show that she wasn't a threat to it.
"It's okay. Where's your mummy, sweetie?" she cooed at the creature. Minerva's eyes darted around into the woods, but there wasn't any sign of a nearby mare.
The creature came very reluctantly to Minerva and she carefully - oh so carefully - reached out her hand. "That's right, I'm not going to hurt you," she whispered, then waited. Her legs were starting to cramp when the unicorn nuzzled her fingers, and Minerva could guess that it was looking for food.
"You're hungry, aren't you? Oh gods, what am I going...," she breathed, not knowing what she could do. But she couldn't leave the creature by itself if the mother wasn't around - and there was no bloody way she was going to go into the woods by herself looking for where the creature came from.
The unicorn walked to Minerva and bumped her with its muzzle, making a small noise and Minerva felt tears forming into her eyes - her sinuses stinging. "Okay, I know what I can do, baby," she whispered to the creature, reaching up and stroking the creature's nose which felt so soft under her fingers.
"Toby, I need you but quietly," Minerva said evenly and instantly the house elf appeared by her side. There hadn't been the loud popping of apparition as normal, but only a muffled 'whoosh'. The unicorn still bucked and Minerva made 'shhh'-ing sounds.
"Toby, find Professor Greg Goyle. He might be at Hogwarts and if not there ask the house elves there where he might be. And quickly - this unicorn I think has been abandoned and it's only a baby," she told the elf.
The house elf nodded quickly. "Yes, mistress Toby will be finding Goyle," he squeaked, then set off to accomplish his task.
Minerva could only wait and hope that the elf would find the Professor and bring him back before the sun went down.
