Summary: After volunteering at the clinic, Ben goes to visit his mothers.
Ben left the clinic a little after six in the morning. He'd seen Ronan briefly, but his lover had been exhausted and gone home to catch a few hours of sleep. Ben wasn't tired though, so he'd decided to visit his mother and Lavender, and treat them to breakfast. It wasn't something they'd had a chance to do much of lately, and hopefully they wouldn't already be at the Ministry.
He Apparated into the kitchen, surprised that the guards weren't around. Lavender could already be at the Ministry though, despite the early hour, so maybe the guards had gone with her. But something didn't seem right. It was too quiet, even for this time of morning. Neither his mother nor Mandy had ever been ones to sleep in, and they always had tea together even if one had to work obscenely early.
"Mum," he called out, making his way up the back stairs and down the hall towards their room. He saw the footprints immediately, two sets stamped in congealed blood on the hardwood. He called out, but there was no answer. He hesitated a moment, but then ran to the open bedroom door, shouting for his mother and Lavender. There was no answer.
He skidded to a halt in front of their door, his brain not at first processing what his eyes were seeing. The smell hit him first, dragging him back from the shocked state he'd been in, and he felt his stomach heave. He didn't know where to look. Each time he turned his head he was hit with another image--Lavender's headless body on the floor, his mother splayed across the bed, split down the middle, white carpet dark now with dried blood, the splatter on the walls almost art-like, Lavender's sightless eyes staring at him from the basket--until he stumbled back into the hallway.
His back hit the wall and he collapsed to his knees, legs too weak to hold him. He lost control of his stomach, vomiting until his stomach clenched and throat burned. When he was done and crawled to the corner, where he couldn't see into the room, and fumbled for his mobile.
He swallowed hard, and made himself focus enough to press the speed dial for Ronan, almost crying in relief when he heard him pick up. "You need to come." He was crying now, and could barely get the words out as Ronan asked where he was. "Please just hurry."
