"One...two...three..." Hannah heard giggling behind her as she continued to count. Standing in the kitchen with one hand over her eyes and her other stirring up a pot of stew, she heard little feet running across the wooden floor into the other room.
"Seventeen...eighteen...nineteen...twenty! Ready or not here I come!" After removing her hand from covering her eyes and checking to make sure the stew wouldn't burn, she went into the other room. She could still faintly hear giggling coming from behind the large basket that Hannah used for her knitting supplies.
"I don't know. If I were a little boy where would I hide?" Hannah purposefully made a show of looking under the sofa and behind the other pieces of furniture, which only made the giggling louder until she heaved a great big sigh. "I guess, Sammy's not in this room," she said, sitting in the armchair next to the basket.
"Here I am!" the little boy announced as he poked out of his hiding place. His shirt and hands were covered in dirt. Hannah's face flash surprised as she reached...
"Yes, love?" Shaking the daydream from her head, she asked the patron to repeat his order before giving him a smile. Once the order was repeated, Hannah waddled over to the tab and pulled his ale.
"What you thinking about just now?" Horace asked. He was a 70-year-old man who came in every Tuesday while his wife played cards with the girls. When she first started, he'd asked her every week to marry her. She said yes a few times and then teased him about his wife.
"Oh, just thinking of what life would have been if I had said yes the first time you asked me to marry you," she said, placing the mug in front of him.
"Oh yeah? Me wife tells me I'm a catch."
"She would know," she teased before moving back along to bar to serve someone else.
