Ashley had her back to Ari, who was stretched out on one of the infirmary beds. Ash was busy working one of the potions she knew so well - one of the sleeping potions that Ben occasionally needed when his nightmares were bad. He hadn't had a nightmare in a while - shortly after the end of term had been the last one that had woken her.
So she'd held him, and soothed him, and reminded him that no one was going to hurt him any more, or make him do horrible things. But still, she liked to have the potions on hand for when he needed them. "So," she said, well aware her amusement was likely evident in her voice, "it is not a date?"
"Ashley, I swear, if I have to tell you one more time ..." Ari grinned. "Would it have been a date if Ben had agreed?"
"Non, because Ben is married," she said as she lifted her hand to exhibit her ring. "But Neville, 'e is not married, so 'e is therefore dateable."
"So, going out to this with Ben would have been ... two friends going out because he's married. You're perfectly aware that that can apply to two single people too, right?"
"Oui, but that is not the case 'ere, non?" She peered over her shoulder for a moment, a grin on her lips. "You asked 'im--"
"Because your husband suggested he might need a break from all the stress and pressure of this current situation the Ministry has thrust upon us."
"...and because you find 'im attractive."
"That is completely irrelevant, Ashley Elizabeth Legard Wolffe."
Ashley snorted back a laugh as she stirred the potion slowly.
"Besides," Ari continued in a slightly more sober tone. "He really doesn't need ... the stress of a relationship anyway. So even if I did find him attractive, and I'm admitting nothing on that front, I wouldn't ... subject him to this right now."
"Oui, because you're such a chore to be around," she murmured as she shifted the cauldron off the fire to let it cool. "Ari ... did it ever occur to you 'e might want to 'ave a relationship? And why would you think are are stressful? You're the opposite of stress, oui?"
"You ... can go stick your logic somewhere uncomfortable," she muttered, but she smiled all the same. "I dunno. We'll see how it goes, I guess. I suppose if he can put up with me at my most ridiculous, I've got a shot."
Ashely chuckled softly as she tended to her potion, letting the comfortable silence linger between them.
