Over the past couple of days Ben had tried hard not to think overly much about Ronan, though it had been hard. Very, very hard, in more than one sense of the word. But instead of dwelling he'd found himself trying out a few new things, which included no flirting. He'd found it surprisingly easy.
He was still friendly, and cheerful, and talked almost nonstop with customers, but after a few stalled attempts he figured out how to manage without being flirty. And, to his surprise, people responded just as well without the invitation to flirt, or more. He was still affectionate with friends, touching them on the arm and giving out hugs, but he thought that if Ronan decided he wanted a relationship, they'd be able to navigate some sort of compromise.
So even though it had only been two days, he kept hoping that Ronan would stop by. Logically he knew that the man would need more time than forty-eight hours, but Ben had always been quick to act once a decision was made. He didn't like to spend time second guessing things, finding that it never benefited anyone.
Luckily, tonight was Friday, and he didn't have much time to spare torturing himself over wondering what Ronan was doing. The pub was busy, and he and Dom were kept on their feet by the demands. Ben also had his first live preformance to look forward to, though he and Hannah had agreed that he would go start playing no earlier than half past nine. It would give time for the dinner crowd to be through.
He had his set in mind, a mix of Muggle and Wizard music that he hoped would interest the usual crowd. He'd decided to start with Hey Jude, because Ronan was right. It was the perfect song to showcase a love of music, and it was popular enough that people would be familiar with it. He'd kept a lookout for Ronan, but so far the man hadn't shown up. And if he were honest, he didn't think that Ronan would. He tried not to be too disappointed over that.
At half past nine, Ben nodded to Dom and headed for the piano. They'd set it up in the corner opposite the bar, facing into the room. There was a microphone attached, and Ben had set up amplifying charms earlier, that would allow him to be heard in all corners of the pub, but without overpowering anyone's conversation.
He slid behind the piano, ignoring the curious glances and the butterflies in his stomach, and played a few chords to warm up before sliding into the opening bars of Hey Jude. Someone had once said that Ben played piano like he was making love, and tonight was no exception. The pub grew quieter as people began to listen, and Ben stopped worrying about his reception as he was lost in the music.
