Entry tags:*complete, 2024 09, character: hannah abbott, character: neville longbottom

RP: Missing pieces
Who: Neville Longbottom, Hannah Abbott
Where: Above the Leaky
When: Evening
Rating/Warnings: None so far, cuteness?
Summary: Neville spends an evening with Hannah
Status: Complete

After Hannah's owl after his first day at Hogwarts, Neville had felt more and more relaxed through the week, knowing that she was wondering how he was doing, and how his first day had been. It was a familiar feeling to be sure, she always used to owl him... though they had dwindled slightly after the divorce. Still, Neville enjoyed his time with Hannah, a lot actually, though she might not know just how much.

He'd left the school in good hands and gone to the Leaky just like he'd promised, smiling when he saw that others were tending bar and that meant Hannah was free for the night. He'd given a small wave and a bright smile before going off to find her.

"There you are." he said with a bright smile, finding her sitting down and relaxing, for once. "I hope I'm not too late?"

Hannah bit her lip against the 'conquest' remark. She had her suspicions about Oliver, but didn't say anything to Neville. It wasn't her place, but the idea of Oliver going after Neville as a different conquest than the one Neville just suggested made her want to giggle.

"You know Oliver. He's as stubborn as a mule," she simply said, shrugging her shoulders.

She nodded. "There is the Ministry program for those like Ben's friend. Still, there is a lot of prejudice out there. And fear, on both sides."

Hannah saw the look that Neville was giving her and she smirked back. "What? Why are you looking at me that way?" she inquired, nudging him with her elbow.

She then laughed. "Oh, that's not fair. You weren't completely clueless."

"He is at that, I don't think he'll be satisfied until he sees me fly for at least two minutes in a straight line... or something resembling one." Neville smiled, wishing he could do that. He really was just pants at flying, he supposed he had a mental block about it.

Neville nodded, troubled over the fear and prejudices that Hannah mentioned. Just because something was run by the Ministry, didn't mean it was good for the recently turned. He sighed heavily before turning his attention back to Hannah and all her talk of Ben.

"Oh... nothing." he said between nudges. "You just talk a lot about a young man you only just hired, that's all." He gave Hannah a knowing look and gulped at the same time.

Neville shrugged one shoulder, still smirking and biting his lip. "Not completely. I hope I took you by surprise sometimes... taking care of Minerva and such. Taking out the trash when I wasn't even asked... a few surprise meals..." ..and surprises afterward. He could tell his ears were getting pink and he wished the damn pie would be ready for heaven's sakes. The truth was, he liked being married, having someone to come home to, a family. He wondered sometimes if they hadn't made a mistake. But it wasn't all up to him, was it?

"I better owl Oliver ahead of time so I can bring my camera," Hannah teased. "We'll put it in the photo album with Frankie and Minerva's baby pictures."

She didn't miss the shadow that flickered across Neville's demeanor when she talked about prejudices. Gods knew she still saw and heard pureblood superiority from some of the old codgers that came grumbling into the pub once in a while from whatever rock then crawled out of.

Hannah huffed out a sound that was between laughing and disbelief. "Just what exactly are you insinuating, Neville Longbottom? Ben is a sweet, young man who just happens to be my employee. He is about the same age as your daughter I must also add."

She narrowed her eyes at Neville, bemused. "Besides, I do believe it isn't the feminine mystique he is interested in if you understand my meaning."

Hannah giggled - actually giggled - when she saw Neville's ears going pink. It had been a long time since she had seen him do that around her. She covered her hand with her mouth.

"Yes, you were very good at taking out the trash and changing nappies," she assured, patting his thigh.

"That's very funny, but I'd much rather use my flying humiliation to teach the students the lessons I mentioned earlier. Not... 'baby's first flight', you'd have to go back in time and take a picture to when I busted my wrist." He was laughing through the whole thing, he could now.

Neville was a pureblood, through and through and sometimes very ashamed of it when he encounted other purebloods who thought that all others were beneath them - they were still witches and wizards, people, no matter what kind of blood flowed through their veins.

"I'm not insinuating anything." Neville said innocently, his eyes going wide. "I was just making an observation, that's all." He bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing and raised an eyebrow, understanding Hannah's meaning perfectly. Well thank Merlin for that.

Clearing his throat and hoping for a cool breeze to bring his colour down again, he smiled and laughed when Hannah patted his thigh. "That's all I was good for then yeah? Garbage and Nappies? What about the time... you remember, when Gran wanted us to come over for one of her 'dinner parties' on our anniversary even? I think I deserve credit in the creative excuses category." It was up to Hannah to determine in what other areas he was creative though.

"I thought baby's first flight for you was being tossed out the window?" Hannah said dryly. She never liked Neville's Uncle after hearing that story.

"Ha! My dimpled arse you aren't," she told her ex-husband, rolling her eyes. "If I didn't know better I'd say there was just the tiniest, smidgen of jealousy in there too." Hannah smirked, looking very much like her daughter while doing so.

Covering her face, Hannah went into another giggle fit at the memory. "Oh gods, you told her we were suffering from explosive diarrhea," she said remembering and recalling through gasps of laughter. "I nearly died the next time I saw her and she asked me how I was feeling."

Hannah swatted Neville on the arm. "And weren't you just trying not to laugh as I stood there with my face beet red too."

"Mmm, no... it wasn't that one." Neville gulped and laughed the tiniest bit. "It was when I got shoved off Blackpool Pier. There was air between me and the water." It was true, still, he'd almost drowned but if they were going that route in determining what his first flight was, then that would be it.

"Since when did you have any dimples on your arse?" He said, with a slightly more wicked grin that was ever known to cross his face. Neville had half a mind to make her prove it... especially if it got him out of showing that he was the tiniest bit jealous. He wasn't young anymore. "Mhmm, keep thinking that." He tried to play it off and thankfully, his reminiscing sent Hannah into giggle fits.

"It got us out of the dinner party didn't it?" It was a crass excuse but really, Gran would've rather had goblins over than to put up with something like that at one of her parties. "True, but would you rather I told her what we were really doing?"

Clucking her tongue against her teeth, Hannah sighed out with exasperation and rolled her eyes. "Oh yes, how quickly I forget." She glared at Neville for making light of the fact that he nearly drowned that day. "And you wonder why I had issues with letting your family look after Minerva when she was a baby."

Reaching over, she smoothed down a piece of hair on the back of Neville's head that always seemed to go up into a cowlick. "Well, your Gran at least I could trust to not try and test Minerva's magical abilities like that." As much as Hannah and Augusta had butted heads over rearing her daughter, Hannah still thought fondly over the woman that raised Neville.

Hannah raised an eyebrow in a 'wouldn't-you-like-to-know' gesture to his question. "If you can't remember then I'm not offering," she replied.

She grinned, nodding that yes it had gotten them out of the dinner party, though it was her turn to blush deeply when Neville recalled what they had been doing that evening.

And the following morning...and into the afternoon as well.

Hannah cleared her throat, pushing the hair on the right side of her face behind her ear. "Erm, no that would have been a lot worse I think," she admitted. Thankfully just then the timer on the oven dinged and Hannah almost sighed in relief.

"Time for me to check in on dinner," she said, rather brightly and stood up before Neville could say anything further. "Where do you want to eat? In the kitchen or in the dining room?"

Neville knew Hannah wouldn't let the kids near Great Uncle Algie, and she was wary of Gran around the kids at first. But when Neville told her that Gran was ready to hex Uncle Algie within an inch of his life both times, it mildly settled her. "Yes well, Gran's better by far than Uncle Algie - I wouldn't have let them near him either."

A huge grin spread across Neville's face and he shook his head. "I didn't say I didn't remember your arse... I just asked since when did the dimples show up?" He bit at his lower lip and knew he was being saucy, and was probably going to land himself in trouble, but still.

It was nice to see that he wasn't the only one to blush either. Neville watched Hannah's cheeks turn pink and get slightly flustered, pushing her hair back behind her ear. He just stared at her smiling and gulped, remembering she used to do that when they were newly married. It brought too many things back.

The oven timer dinged and shook him from his thoughts. Hannah was up like she'd been electrocuted and Neville sighed a bit. "Kitchen is fine Hannah, I told you... no fuss." He stood up, more slowly than she did though and ambled into the kitchen, standing behind her when she'd safely removed everything from the oven. "Can I help?" he said quietly.

"I miss Augusta sometimes. She was an old battleaxe but at least she could be counted on, yeah?" Hannah admitted with a small smile. "It's too bad she couldn't stay around long enough to see Frankie grow up."

She sighed, then shrugged. "Oh well, no use dwelling on that. She's still alive through Minerva. I swear that girl is so much like your grandmother at times it's spooky."

Hannah had enough of a chance to swat Neville on the leg with the remark about dimples on her arse. "Never you mind about that. It isn't as if I like them there in the first place," she replied, huffing just slightly.

In the kitchen, she had a moment to compose herself. Talks about when the first became married were bittersweet and it didn't help that Hannah still found Neville quite attractive. Of course, she wasn't the only one.

Sighing, she took out the pie from the oven and ignored Neville's small protest about not making a fuss.

A small shiver went through her, hearing Neville's quiet voice so close to her ear. Hannah could feel the warmth of him against her back, as close as he was.

She put her hand to her forehead in thought. "Um...wine?" she asked weakly.

"She was formidable, that's for sure." Neville grinned, remembering when the Death Eaters kidnapped Gran and tried to hold her for ransom - they should've known they wouldn't get away with it. But it was true, Minerva was carrying on her legacy quite well. "I never needed to teach Minnie Gran's 'glare'... I think she just inherited it."

Laughing out loud after he got a swift swat regarding his comment on Hannah's arse-dimples... which he hadn't seen yet. He only smiled and bit his lip, holding his tongue from saying that he'd like to see them - he'd probably get more than a swat for that comment.

Watching her move in the kitchen, Neville stood and joined her, maybe a little too close, he could smell her hair as he stood behind her. He waited for her answer, wondering why she still had her back turned to him. "Alright." he said quietly, letting his hand touch her shoulder briefly before he went to the icebox for wine.

Plucking up the corkscrew he went to the kitchen table and rolled up his sleeves slightly, opening the bottle of wine for the two of them.

"Gods, yeah - sometimes when that girl gives it to me my blood runs cold," Hannah admitted with a chuckle. "But, we won't tell Minnie that. Gods knows that girl doesn't need any more amunition against me."

Hannah breathed a little easier when Neville moved away to get the wine, though her face still felt flushed and moist. She didn't know why he was having this effect on her. They had known each other for so long, been married, had children for gods sakes and even divorced. It was ridiculous!

Placing the pie on a trivet in the middle of the kitchen table, she also had prepared a salad which she began to retrieve from the icebox. Hannah looked over as Neville was uncorking the wine bottle, seeing his forearms which were always a part of Neville's body which Hannah found terribly sexy.

Oh gods you're acting like a horny teenager she scolded herself, then brought the salad over to the table.

"Oil and vinegar dressing?" she asked huskily, then cleared her throat.

"You do know that the fact Minerva can pull off that look would make Gran extremely proud?" With a raised eyebrow he looked up and started to wrestle with the bottle of wine.

He could kind of feel Hannah's eyes on him but he thought it may have been she was watching that he didn't destroy her kitchen in the process of opening the wine. The cork came easily out of the bottle and he began to pour when Hannah cleared her throat. "Sure, that sounds fine to me." Nothing fancy... he always tells her, maybe he's getting through?

"Alright well, if you have that... the wine is poured, let me get the pie?" It smelled heavenly, Hannah knew what he liked. The thought made his cheeks grow pink, just knowing that she still did things like this, special things, for him. He took the pie with the potholders to the table while Hannah still tossed the salad. Neville put the pie down and held out her chair for her with a small, quirky smile on his face.
